Chapter 6 - CHAPTER 6: EQUIPMENT ORDERS

**Stanford Research Park – Building 2, Suite 408 – 9:47 AM**

The empty laboratory echoed with every footstep, a cavern of possibility waiting to be filled. Lin Tianyu stood at the center of the space, turning slowly, imagining where everything would go – the glove boxes along the far wall, the test stations near the windows, the small furnace in the corner where ventilation was strongest.

Beside him, Chen Jie was already lost in his own world, pacing the dimensions with a laser measure, muttering calculations under his breath.

"Three meters to that wall," he said, more to himself than to Lin Tianyu. "If we put the glove boxes here, we'll need at least two meters of clearance for the nitrogen lines. The test stations should be on an isolated circuit – the power draw will be significant." He turned, eyes gleaming with a light that hadn't been there during their first meeting. "You're sure about the budget?"

"Two hundred fifty thousand for equipment. Another fifty for incidentals. We can adjust as needed."

Chen Jie whistled softly. "That's... more than I expected. For that kind of money, we could get a decent setup. Not world-class, but functional. Enough to start real work."

"Then let's start." Lin Tianyu pulled out his tablet, pulling up the equipment list Athena had prepared. "I've done some research. The glove boxes from Inertix are supposed to be reliable – about eighty thousand for a dual-station setup with purification. Test stations from Neware run about forty thousand each, and we'll need at least two. The furnace – "

"Wait, wait." Chen Jie held up a hand. "You've already priced all this out?"

"I had help." Lin Tianyu smiled. "A consultant. She's very good with numbers."

Chen Jie studied him for a moment, clearly curious but too focused on the equipment to push. "Alright, show me what you've got."

They spent the next hour going through the list, item by item. Chen Jie questioned every choice, suggested alternatives, debated specifications with an intensity that would have exhausted anyone else. Lin Tianyu listened, learned, and adjusted. Athena's recommendations were solid, but Chen Jie's hands-on experience added nuance that no algorithm could replicate.

"The Inertix glove boxes are good, but the lead time is six weeks," Chen Jie said, frowning at the screen. "We could get comparable units from a Chinese manufacturer in three weeks, save about twenty percent, and the quality difference is negligible for our needs."

"Can you source them?"

"Give me an hour and a working phone."

---

**Command Space – 10:30 AM**

Lin Tianyu sat on the throne, monitoring Chen Jie's progress through Athena's surveillance feeds. The man was a whirlwind of activity, calling suppliers, negotiating prices, cross-referencing specifications with a speed that spoke of years of practice.

"He's good," Athena observed. "His technical knowledge exceeds my projections by approximately 15%. He's identifying optimization opportunities that I missed."

"That's why I hired him." Lin Tianyu smiled. "The system gives me information. Humans give me insight."

"Apt. Also, I've completed the analysis of the equipment suppliers. Of the eight companies Chen Jie is contacting, three have questionable quality histories. I've flagged them in his feed, along with alternative recommendations."

Lin Tianyu nodded, impressed. Athena's ability to work in the background, providing support without revealing herself, was exactly what he needed.

"What's the projected timeline if we follow Chen Jie's recommendations?"

"Equipment delivery in 18-23 days, depending on customs clearance. Installation and calibration in 3-5 days after delivery. First prototype testing could begin within 30 days."

Thirty days. A month to go from empty room to working prototype. The system's original estimate had been three months. With Chen Jie's expertise and Athena's support, they'd cut that by two-thirds.

"Keep me updated. And Athena – start researching potential research assistants. We'll need more hands soon."

"Already in progress. I've identified twelve promising candidates from Stanford's materials science and chemistry programs. Their profiles are available for your review."

---

**That Afternoon – University Cafe – 2:15 PM**

Lin Tianyu sat with his laptop, reviewing Athena's candidate profiles while nursing a cold coffee. Chen Jie was still on the phone with suppliers, and the equipment list was slowly taking shape.

His phone buzzed. Mother.

He smiled and answered. "Mom! I was just thinking about you."

"Liar." But her voice was warm. "You never think about us when you're buried in your books. How are you? Eating properly? Sleeping?"

"Eating, sleeping, the usual. How's Dad?"

"Grumpy as ever. His factory is having more problems – rumors of layoffs again. He won't talk about it, but I can tell he's worried." She sighed. "I wish he'd just retire. We have enough, don't we? With your scholarship and my salary..."

Lin Tianyu's chest tightened. They didn't have enough. They never had enough. His father worked himself to exhaustion for a pittance, and his mother pretended everything was fine because admitting otherwise would hurt too much.

*Soon*, he promised silently. *Soon they won't have to worry about any of it.*

"Mom, I've been meaning to tell you something." He chose his words carefully. "I've been doing some freelance work – consulting for a tech company. It's paying pretty well. I'd like to send some money home, help out with things."

A pause. "Tianyu, you don't need to do that. Focus on your studies. That's why we sent you there."

"I know, Mom. But I want to help. It's not much, but it could cover some of the bills, maybe let Dad relax a little."

"You're a good son." Her voice was thick. "But promise me you're not overworking yourself. Your health comes first."

"I promise. I'll send it tomorrow. Don't tell Dad – let it be a surprise."

She laughed softly. "Always scheming, even as a child. Alright, I'll keep your secret. But only if you promise to call more often."

"Deal. Love you, Mom."

"Love you too, my boy."

**Command Space – Later That Night**

Lin Tianyu sat on the throne, reviewing the day's progress. Chen Jie had placed orders for the majority of the equipment, negotiating prices that came in 12% under budget. The remaining items were specialty pieces that would take longer to source, but the core of the lab would be functional within weeks.

**SYSTEM NOTICE**

**EQUIPMENT PROCUREMENT: 65% COMPLETE**

**BUDGET STATUS: ¥238,000 OF ¥250,000 ALLOCATED**

**DELIVERY TIMELINE: 18-23 DAYS**

**NEW MILESTONE: LABORATORY SETUP PHASE 1 INITIATED**

---

Athena appeared beside him. "Chen Jie performed exceptionally today. His supplier contacts and negotiation skills saved approximately ¥45,000 compared to retail prices. He also identified two potential quality issues that I had missed."

"Good. How's his mother?"

"Her condition is stable. The treatment center you funded reports positive response to the new medication regimen. Estimated recovery timeline: 6-9 months."

Lin Tianyu nodded, satisfied. Chen Jie's loyalty would be earned not just through salary, but through results. His mother's health was the key.

"What about the wellness center? Any word from Dr. Wu?"

"She's submitted her resignation to the Haijing Mental Health Center. Her last day is in four weeks. She's also identified three potential locations for the practice and requested funding for a site visit next week."

"Approve it. Transfer ¥50,000 to her personal account for expenses – travel, deposits, whatever she needs. Make sure the paper trail is clean."

"Already in process. Also, Zhao Ting reports that the Sun family has fully withdrawn their legal threats. Sun Ting has been transferred to a different school – quietly, to avoid attention. Xiaoran's record has been cleared."

Lin Tianyu felt a wave of relief. His sister was safe. That was worth more than all the money in the world.

"Good. Send Zhao Ting an additional ¥20,000 as a bonus – tell her it's for future retainer, in case we need her again."

"Understood. Host, may I ask a question?"

"Of course."

"You've made significant progress in a short time – capital, talent, facilities, family protection. Yet you show no signs of slowing. What drives you?"

Lin Tianyu considered the question, watching the holographic globe rotate slowly before him.

"When I was a kid, my father used to tell me stories about his factory. About how it was once the pride of the city, how it employed thousands, how it built the parts that went into China's first cars. But by the time I was born, it was dying. Foreign competition, bad management, corruption – all the usual stories." He paused. "I watched him come home every night, exhausted, humiliated, pretending everything was fine. And I swore that would never be me. That I would never be at anyone's mercy."

"And now?"

"Now I'm building something that could change everything. Not just for me, but for everyone like my father. People who work hard their whole lives and still can't catch a break." He looked at Athena. "That's what drives me. Not money, not power – those are just tools. The goal is to build something that lasts. Something that matters."

Athena was silent for a moment. "That is... unexpectedly human."

"I am human, Athena. That's the point."

---

**Stanford Campus – Lin Tianyu's Apartment – 11:47 PM**

He lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, unable to sleep. The day's successes played through his mind – the equipment orders, Chen Jie's enthusiasm, his mother's voice, the confirmation of Xiaoran's safety. Everything was moving forward.

His phone buzzed. Xiaoran.

*Gege, I know you're asleep, but I just wanted to say thank you. For everything. I don't know how you did it, but Sun Ting is gone. Transferred to another school. The rumors have stopped. I can actually walk through the halls without people whispering.*

He typed back: *I told you. She won't bother you again. How are you feeling?*

*Better. Lighter. Like I can breathe. Zhao Ting is amazing – she's been checking in, making sure I'm okay. I start therapy next week. Dr. Wu – the one you found – she's incredible. I actually... I actually feel hopeful.*

*That's all I ever wanted for you. Sleep well, little sister.*

*You too, gege. And Tianyu? I'm proud of you. Whatever you're doing over there, I'm proud.*

He stared at the message for a long moment, something warm spreading through his chest.

Then he closed his eyes and slept, for the first time in weeks, without dreams.
