[The Omniverse - Sector 9 Glacial Labyrinth]
Equipped with his brand-new, astronomically expensive Abyssal Broadsword Max, Leo dropped into the Sector 9 Glacial Labyrinth.
The air inside the dungeon was a lethal negative sixty degrees. Jagged ice spikes coated the walls, and the suffocating blizzard immediately began to freeze the condensation on Leo's armor.
"It's fine," Leo shivered violently, his teeth chattering. "The new Broadsword Max has a built-in Thermal Ignition Core. I just need to turn on the heating element."
Leo gripped the hilt of his new sword and pressed the glowing red 'Thermal' rune.
The sword beeped a cheerful, high-pitched corporate chime.
A neon-orange holographic terminal projected into the blinding blizzard.

Leo stared at the prompt in sheer, freezing horror. "What?! The heating core is physically inside the sword! I already bought the sword!"
Up in the pristine, climate-controlled executive office of the Abyssal Cloud Hub, Victor Thorne sat comfortably by a roaring fireplace, watching the live biometric feed on his Tycoon's Ledger.
Valerius, the celestial CTO, stood by the desk, analyzing the code.
"Principal Thorne," Valerius asked, slightly confused. "We spent massive capital physically manufacturing and installing those Thermal Cores into every single Broadsword Max. Why did we software-lock a physical piece of hardware they already paid for?"
"Because selling a product once is an archaic business model, Valerius," Victor said smoothly, taking a sip of his hot, black coffee. "We are transitioning from hardware sales to Hardware-as-a-Service (HaaS)."
Seraphina nodded in approval, her silver pen scratching against her clipboard.
"If we charge them a flat fee for the heating element upfront, they only pay us once," Victor explained, his Tycoon's Aura humming with absolute corporate malice. "By placing the physical hardware inside the sword but locking it behind a software paywall, we force them to rent the utility of their own property. They will own nothing, and we will own their recurring revenue."
Down in the Glacial Labyrinth, Leo's core body temperature was dropping to critical, lethal levels. Frostbite was creeping up his fingers, turning his skin black. The Sector 9 Frost-Golems were emerging from the snow, their massive ice-clubs dragging on the frozen stone.
"I have no choice!" Leo wept, his frozen fingers fumbling as he tapped the holographic "ACCEPT" button.
[PAYMENT ACCEPTED. THERMAL CORE UNLOCKED FOR 30 DAYS.]
The sword instantly flared with a brilliant, roaring fire, melting the frost off Leo's armor. He swung the blade, surviving the golems, but his spirit was entirely shattered. He had just gone into debt to rent a heating element that was already inside his own property. Victor Thorne had successfully turned the heroes' survival instincts into a permanent subscription service.
