(Ruby's POV)
The car smells like blood and victory.
Nicholas is slumped against me, his head on my shoulder, his hand gripping mine like he's afraid I'll disappear. His breathing is slow now, steadier. The facility is far behind us. The alarms are just a memory.
But I know this isn't over.
Kai is still out there. His empire is still standing. And tonight, at his gala, he's going to accept an award for being a "humanitarian." The thought makes me want to throw up.
"Ruby."
I look down. Nicholas's eyes are open, clearer than before.
"We need to go to the gala."
"You need a hospital."
"No." He sits up slowly, wincing. "I need to end this. Tonight. If we don't stop Kai now, he'll keep coming. He'll never stop."
"He's right," Anya says from the front seat. "Kai's men are already looking for us. The facility will report the break-in. By morning, we'll be hunted."
"So what do we do?"
