Chapter 82 - Chapter 82: Desiring World Peace More Than Anyone Else

"The situation back then was far too chaotic. One of my best students, Jean Grey, even turned to the dark side due to her powers spiraling out of control."

"To stop Jean from causing innocent slaughter, I even died once..."

At this point, Charles paused, seemingly reluctant to talk about this part of his experience.

He skipped over it and continued: "Ultimately, Logan endured the pain and killed Jean, finally bringing that crisis to an end."

"However, after that incident, the internal division was still not resolved. There are still some compatriots who will resort to any means necessary to obtain the cure."

"At that time, compatriots were frequently lured by the promise of the cure into selling information about other mutants to ambitious schemers."

"I was worried the cure incident would cause the mutant community to completely fracture and fall apart, and I wanted to quickly quell the chaotic situation of that time."

"Therefore, for the first time in my life, I crossed my own bottom line and erased the memories of mutants from all of humanity."

"But leading up to now, Logan has always blamed himself for killing Jean, and I too wish to undo the mistakes of the past."

"And so, I thought: if Jean was able to die and resurrect in 1992, then she should be able to do so now as well."

"However, I am worried about Jean's powers spiraling out of control again. If she truly can be resurrected this time, I want to find a more reliable method to prevent her from losing control."

"Then, I thought of the telepath who made me suffer a minor setback a few days ago."

"I want to invite this telepath to work with me to construct a psychic perimeter within Jean's mind. When Jean faces the risk of losing control, we can suppress her in time..."

Charles rambled on and on.

Simply summarized, Charles's telepathic power alone was insufficient to suppress Jean, so he wanted to find a helper.

But Harvey didn't agree with Charles's approach.

"Calling it a 'psychic perimeter' sounds nice, but to put it bluntly, you just want to build a psychic prison in Jean's mind, locking her up to prevent her from losing control."

"As the saying goes, it's better to channel than to block. Blindly suppressing her will, sooner or later, lead to a massive rebound when she hits rock bottom."

"And you've already seen the consequences of that rebound: she loses control and turns to the dark side."

"I know you think Jean losing control is entirely because the suppressive force wasn't strong enough."

"But I believe this is an extremely flawed way of thinking."

"Ultimately, it's because the fundamental nature of Jean's power is too high; there is no power in this world that can suppress her."

"Even if you can suppress her temporarily, it's meaningless, because sooner or later you will suffer a massive backlash."

"The best method is to let Jean master her own abilities. It's a lack of mastery that causes her to lose control."

Although Harvey spoke very bluntly and his words carried an undertone of criticizing Charles...

After Logan and the others thought about it carefully, they all revealed thoughtful expressions.

Charles sighed: "I also thought about guiding her, but the rate at which Jean's power grows is simply too fast—faster than anyone could possibly imagine."

Is this the trouble of being too strong?

It seems being the host of the Phoenix Force really isn't something just anyone can handle. Harvey felt quite a bit of envy in his heart.

"Since it's so difficult to suppress Jean Grey's power, why go resurrect her at all?"

"What if Jean loses control again after she's resurrected? Are you sure you can handle the fallout?"

Harvey couldn't understand the mentality of Charles and his group.

Knowing full well that Jean is prone to losing control, why do they insist on courting death and trying to find a way to resurrect her?

Charles fell silent for a moment before speaking slowly:

"This world is becoming increasingly dangerous, and the overall strength of mutants has been gradually weakened in recent years. Couple that with the fact that I am getting old."

"All of these factors have led to a very bleak, uncertain future for mutants. We desperately need a powerhouse who can step forward and lead us!"

Harvey frowned in deep thought. He felt Charles was currently swinging from one extreme to another.

Before, he was too conservative; now, he was being far too radical.

If Jean turned dark after resurrecting and decided to destroy the universe or something, even he might not be able to stop her.

This kind of unstable factor was exactly what Harvey wanted to avoid the most. He absolutely didn't want to personally manufacture a ticking time bomb.

Therefore, he looked at Charles with a serious expression and said: "I'm sorry, but I cannot help with this. The risk of Jean losing control again after resurrection is simply too great."

Hearing Harvey refuse to help, Logan, who had grown lovesick from missing Jean, started to panic.

"If Jean loses control again, I can stop her. Please, you all have to believe me!"

Harvey let out a highly disdainful scoff and said, "Do you think this is a game?"

"Using the lives of everyone in the world to gamble on whether Jean will lose control after resurrecting? Mr. Logan, you are being far too selfish!"

Iceman looked like he wanted to say something but held back.

He now felt that both sides made sense. On one hand was his former comrade; on the other was the risk of her losing control.

Shadowcat's stance, however, was very simple: she stood with her friends and family.

"Jean isn't just a comrade to us; she is our stabilizing pillar. With her here, everyone will feel at ease."

Harvey curled his lip helplessly, feeling like these people had completely lost their minds.

"I don't like gambling on probabilities. I'll say it again: the risk of Jean resurrecting is too high. I cannot help you. I'm sorry."

Realizing it would be difficult to sway Harvey's attitude in the short term, and that further arguing would be useless, Charles had no choice but to take his leave.

"Let's put this matter on hold for now. We'll figure out a way to resurrect Jean first. After all, we haven't even taken the first step yet. We can discuss this again in the future."

Harvey returned to his icy demeanor and said, "Alright. Then I won't see you out."

After the X-Men left.

Harvey sat on the sofa, thinking quietly.

"I keep feeling like these mutants are still going to inevitably court death. I just hope this disaster-prone Marvel Universe can withstand whatever they end up doing."

For Harvey, no matter how badly the situation deteriorated, he still had an out: worst comes to worst, he could just run away to the Harry Potter world.

But giving up on the Marvel Universe meant giving up on the future, giving up hope of growing stronger, and giving up the possibility of immortality.

So, in reality, he desired for the Marvel Universe to continue developing peacefully far more than anyone else.

"Two more months, and Professor Snape's research on the physique potion should be nearly complete."

"I hope we can pass this upcoming period peacefully and steadily. Charles and the others better not rush into stirring up trouble."

As Harvey was lost in thought, the sun outside the window had unknowingly risen to its zenith. Sunlight cast mottled light and shadows, spilling across the wooden floor of the living room.

"Darling, you seem to be very troubled?"

A familiar, beautiful voice suddenly reached his ears. Harvey looked up.

Wanda was wrapped in a bath towel, her cascading hair draped casually over her glowing, fragrant shoulders. Her long, beautiful legs were clad in black sheer pantyhose, and the fresh scent of rosewater permeated the air.

She was leaning against the bedroom door, her eyes rippling with affection as she looked at her troubled man, offering a passionate invitation: "How about coming in and helping me out?"

Harvey sighed softly, "A little wildcat whose appetite can never be satisfied is truly too clingy."

Complaints aside, he immediately sprang into action, wrapping his arm around the beauty's slender waist and walking into the bedroom.

"Don't be so impatient, we haven't even eaten lunch yet..."

"Eating a greedy little kitten like you is more than enough for me!"

"It tickles... hehe..."

The crisp, melodious giggles, like the song of a nightingale, gradually faded away into the silent living room.
