Chapter 43 - THE LAST MEMORY WE KEEP

The light slowly disappeared.

For a moment...

There was nothing.

No sound.

No memories.

No archive.

No past.

Ethan felt like he was floating between two worlds.

The world he knew.

And the world he was leaving behind.

Then...

A voice reached him.

"Ethan."

A voice he would recognize anywhere.

Elena.

---

His eyes opened.

He was lying on the floor of the archive.

But something was different.

The room was quiet.

The glowing walls had faded.

The endless memories had disappeared.

The archive was no longer alive.

It was just a room.

A place.

A memory of a journey that had changed everything.

---

"Ethan!"

Before he could stand, Elena ran toward him.

For a second, she stopped.

Like she was making sure he was real.

Then she hugged him.

Not because she was afraid.

Not because she thought she would lose him.

Because after everything...

She finally had him back.

Ethan stood still.

He had spent his whole life avoiding emotions.

Avoiding attachments.

Avoiding anything that could hurt him.

But now...

He understood something.

The things that can hurt you the most...

Are often the things that make your life worth living.

Slowly, he hugged her back.

---

"You came back."

Her voice was quiet.

Ethan smiled slightly.

"I promised."

Elena looked at him.

"You finally kept a promise."

He raised an eyebrow.

"Finally?"

She smiled.

"You have a habit of disappearing into dangerous places."

Ethan looked away.

"Fair."

For the first time in a long time...

They laughed.

Not because everything was perfect.

But because they were together.

---

When they returned to the others...

Everyone was waiting.

Sophia immediately held Ethan.

No words.

No explanations.

Just a mother finally getting the chance to hold her son without fear.

"I thought I lost you again."

Ethan closed his eyes.

"You won't."

Sophia smiled through tears.

Because she knew.

This time...

He wasn't saying it to comfort her.

He meant it.

---

Daniel looked at the empty archive.

"So it is really over."

Ethan nodded.

"The archive is free."

Lily touched the old walls.

"The guardians' duty has ended."

Aaron smiled softly.

"After generations..."

"Finally."

---

Lucas looked at Daniel.

For years, he searched for his brother.

For answers.

For closure.

Now he had all three.

"You know..."

Lucas smiled.

"You are still annoying."

Daniel laughed.

"And you are still dramatic."

For the first time...

Their reunion felt complete.

Not a goodbye.

Not a lost memory.

A beginning.

---

Months passed.

Sakura Blossom High slowly returned to normal.

The underground archive remained hidden.

Not because it was protecting secrets.

But because some stories didn't need the whole world to know them.

Some stories were special because only the people who lived them understood them.

---

Ethan changed too.

The boy who once walked through the school with empty eyes...

Was gone.

He still liked silence.

He still preferred peace.

But now...

He didn't run from people.

He didn't run from memories.

He didn't run from love.

---

One evening...

Ethan stood near the old clock tower.

The same place where everything had started.

The same place where he first saw the strange connection between his life and the forgotten past.

Elena walked toward him.

"You always come here when you are thinking."

Ethan smiled.

"You noticed?"

"I notice everything about you."

He looked at her.

"That's dangerous."

She smiled.

"So is following you into secret underground archives."

He laughed softly.

---

For a while, they watched the sunset.

No mystery.

No danger.

Just a normal moment.

A moment they never thought they would get.

Elena touched her pendant.

"It stopped glowing."

Ethan looked at it.

"Maybe it doesn't need to anymore."

"Why?"

He looked at her.

"Because we found what it was looking for."

She smiled.

"What?"

Ethan answered quietly:

"Us."

---

Elena looked away, trying to hide her smile.

"You know..."

"What?"

"When we first met..."

"I thought you were impossible to understand."

Ethan nodded.

"I was."

She shook her head.

"No."

A pause.

"You were just waiting for someone who would try."

---

The words stayed with him.

Because that was the truth.

Elena didn't save him.

She didn't fix him.

She didn't change him.

She simply saw him.

And sometimes...

Being seen by someone was the greatest gift.

---

Years later...

Sakura Blossom High celebrated its anniversary.

The school was full of students.

Laughter.

Life.

New stories.

Ethan stood outside the building.

Watching everyone.

A normal scene.

A scene he once thought he would never have.

Elena came beside him.

"Still thinking?"

"Always."

She smiled.

"About the past?"

He shook his head.

"No."

"About the future."

---

She looked at him.

"And what do you see?"

Ethan looked at the school.

At their friends.

At the place where everything began.

Then he looked at her.

"A life."

"Not perfect."

"Not without problems."

"But ours."

---

Elena smiled.

"That's enough."

Ethan nodded.

"It is."

---

The old clock tower rang.

Once.

Twice.

The same clock that had been frozen for twenty years...

Was finally moving forward.

And Ethan understood.

Some memories are meant to be kept.

Some are meant to be released.

But the most important ones...

Are the ones we create ourselves.

---

Because in the end...

Ethan Carter was never the boy who carried a forgotten memory.

He was the boy who learned that memories are not chains.

They are proof.

Proof that we loved.

Proof that we lived.

Proof that even after everything changes...

Some people will always find their way back to each other.

And Ethan and Elena...

Were one of those stories.

A story that was forgotten.

A story that was found.

A story that would never be lost again.
