Chapter 25 - The Door that should never be opened

In the old part of the city, where the streets were narrow and the lights were always dim, there stood a house no one dared to enter.

People called it "The Silent House."

No one lived there.

No one visited.

And yet… every night, someone knocked from inside.

Liam never believed in ghost stories.

At least, not until he moved next door.

It was cheap rent, and he needed a place fast. The landlord warned him once, casually—

"Don't go near that house."

Liam laughed it off.

"Why? Is it haunted?"

The landlord didn't smile.

"Some doors are better left closed."

That night, at exactly 2:13 AM—

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Liam woke up.

He sat up in bed, confused. The sound wasn't from his door.

It came from outside.

From the Silent House.

He checked the time again.

2:13 AM.

The knocking came again. Slow. Steady. Almost like someone was asking to be let out.

Liam walked to the window.

The street was empty.

But the sound… it was real.

And it was coming from inside the abandoned house.

The next morning, Liam asked the neighbors.

They avoided his eyes.

One old man finally spoke.

"It knocks every night," he said quietly. "Same time. Same sound."

"Why doesn't anyone check?" Liam asked.

The old man's hands trembled.

"Because the last person who checked… never came back."

That should have been enough.

It wasn't.

Curiosity is a dangerous thing.

That night, Liam waited.

2:13 AM.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

This time, he didn't hesitate.

He grabbed a flashlight and stepped outside.

The air felt colder than usual.

The Silent House stood there, dark and still… except for the sound.

Knocking.

From inside.

Liam pushed the gate open. It creaked loudly, like it hadn't moved in years.

He reached the door.

For a moment, he hesitated.

Then—

He knocked back.

Silence.

The knocking stopped.

Liam's heart pounded.

"Hello?" he called.

No answer.

Just silence.

Then slowly…

Knock. Knock. Knock.

From the other side.

But this time…

It matched his rhythm exactly.

Liam stepped back.

Something wasn't right.

He reached for the door handle.

It was cold.

Too cold.

With a deep breath—

He opened it.

Darkness swallowed him.

The inside of the house smelled old… and wrong.

Dust covered everything, but there were footprints on the floor.

Fresh footprints.

Leading deeper inside.

"Hello?" Liam called again.

His voice echoed strangely, like the house was too big inside… bigger than it should be.

Then—

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Right behind him.

Liam spun around.

The door… was gone.

Only a wall stood where it had been.

His breath caught in his throat.

"No… no…"

The knocking came again.

Closer this time.

From the hallway ahead.

Liam slowly walked forward, his legs shaking.

At the end of the hallway—

There was a door.

Old. Wooden. Slightly open.

And from behind it…

The knocking continued.

Liam stepped closer.

The door creaked as he pushed it open.

Inside the room—

Nothing.

Just empty space.

He frowned.

Then he noticed it.

On the wall…

There was another door.

And from behind it—

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Liam's hands trembled.

"How many doors are there…?" he whispered.

He opened the second door.

Another room.

Another door.

Another knock.

Each time he opened a door…

There was another one behind it.

Endless.

The knocking never stopped.

It only got louder.

Faster.

Desperate.

As if something was trying to escape.

Or trying to reach him.

Finally, Liam reached the last door.

It was different.

Black.

Cold.

And silent.

No knocking.

Just silence.

Liam slowly reached for the handle.

But before he could open it—

A voice whispered behind him.

"Don't."

He froze.

"Turn around slowly," the voice said.

Liam did.

And his blood turned to ice.

Standing behind him…

Was himself.

Same face.

Same clothes.

Same eyes.

But the smile…

It wasn't human.

"You shouldn't have opened the first door," the other Liam said softly.

The real Liam stepped back. "What… what are you?"

The other one tilted his head.

"I'm what was knocking."

Silence filled the room.

Liam's heart raced.

"Then… what's behind this last door?" he asked.

The other Liam smiled wider.

"That's where you'll go."

Before Liam could react—

The door behind him slammed open.

Darkness burst out like a storm.

Hands—cold, invisible—grabbed him.

He screamed.

The last thing he saw…

Was himself standing there, watching.

Smiling.

The next morning—

The Silent House was quiet again.

No knocking.

No sound.

Just silence.

Until…

At exactly 2:13 AM—

From inside the house—

Knock. Knock. Knock.

But this time…

The voice was different.

"Help me…"
