Chapter 14 - the Predator and the prey

The midday bell rang, and the Academy's grand canteen erupted into its usual chaos—laughter, chatter, clanging cutlery, and the faint hum of magical energy as students casually enhanced their meals or practiced minor spells.

Aiden, as always, chose a quiet corner. Far from the bustling tables, he sat alone, his lunch untouched for the moment. Calm. Observant. Unbothered by the noisy world around him.

The five girls—Elara, Lyra, Seris, Mira, and Nyx—watched from a nearby table, exchanging glances. They could sense the quiet aura of power around him, the same subtle tremor they had felt in class, just barely perceptible but undeniable.

Kael, of course, could not leave well enough alone.

Striding toward Aiden's corner, smirk firmly in place, he threw himself into the seat across from him without asking. The movement drew immediate attention. Conversations in the surrounding tables quieted as students recognized the tension.

"Still hiding in your little corner, huh?" Kael said, voice dripping with mockery. "I don't know why the Academy even tolerates you. You're weak, worthless… just a pretty face."

A faint ripple of murmurs spread. Some students looked nervously at Aiden. Others leaned in, curious. Even some of the usually confident boys shifted uncomfortably.

Aiden looked up at him, expression neutral, eyes calm as ever. He didn't move. Didn't react.

Kael leaned forward, voice dropping slightly to a more challenging tone. "Come on. Stop pretending. Let's see what you've really got. Fight me. Just a spar. I'll make it quick… or at least I'll humiliate you in front of everyone."

The surrounding tables went completely silent. The air seemed to thrum with tension. Students instinctively leaned back, sensing that this was no ordinary challenge.

Lyra, whispering to the others, muttered, "…he's provoking him. Kael's about to regret it."

Elara's eyes narrowed. "…Everyone's about to find out what happens when you mock someone like Aiden."

Seris leaned forward slightly, voice low. "…And the teacher… she's probably already aware this is happening. She'll watch. She's fascinated, remember?"

Mira's eyes flicked nervously between Kael and Aiden. "…This isn't going to end well for Kael."

Nyx's expression darkened. "…It won't be a lesson. It'll be a warning. To everyone."

Kael grinned, leaning back slightly as if trying to maintain confidence. "What? Cat got your tongue? Afraid to fight me, huh? Maybe everyone's right… you really are worthless."

Aiden's gaze remained steady. Calm. Silent.

The Primordial consciousness inside him stirred faintly, like a quiet storm preparing to break. Do you wish to test me, fool? it asked softly.

Aiden's lips moved just slightly. "If I wanted to fight you… it wouldn't be quick."

A hush fell over the entire canteen. Even students who hadn't been paying attention were now frozen, staring at the quiet corner. Some felt a faint tremor in the air—subtle, but terrifying.

Kael's grin faltered ever so slightly. He laughed nervously. "Hah… yeah, sure. Pretend you're not scared."

Veylan had been observing discreetly from the far side of the hall, his sharp eyes assessing the situation. He is aware of Kael's provocation. Calm, patient… a predator restraining itself. Kael has no idea what he's standing before. If he makes one wrong move… this boy could end the world.

And high above, in her private chamber, the silver-haired teacher leaned forward, red eyes glowing faintly. Her heartbeat quickened again—not in fear, but in excitement.

Finally, she thought. The boy is being provoked. Let's see what stirs within him…

Kael, sensing the sudden tension, tried to maintain bravado, but his voice cracked slightly as he said, "Come on! Don't just sit there—fight!"

Aiden tilted his head, eyes narrowing just the slightest fraction. The faintest pulse of energy stirred around him. Not hostile… but aware. Calculating. Patient. And terrifying in its calm.

The entire canteen remained silent.

No one dared speak.

No one dared move.

The first sparks of reckoning had arrived.

And in that quiet corner, Aiden's calm gaze finally lifted to meet Kael's challenge.
