Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Continental Buyout and the Paris Pink Slip

[Location: Paris, France — 30,000 Feet Above the Atlantic Ocean]

The Icarus One, a private sub-orbital cruiser Alex had purchased and retrofitted in the three hours it took to cross the ocean, tore through the sky like a jagged shard of obsidian. Inside, the cabin was a masterclass in forbidden luxury—walls lined with active-matrix Will-Crystal, floors made of compressed carbon-nanotubes, and a bar stocked with liquors from distilleries Alex had bought and shuttered just to ensure he owned the last bottles on Earth.

[Current Balance: $850,000,000,000.00] [Extraction Rate: $5,000.00 Per Second (Continental Financier)] [System Level: 4 (40% Progress)] [Alert: Emergency G7 Summit convened at the Élysée Palace.]

"Alex," Lily said, her holographic form flickering with a soft, golden radiance as she adjusted a global heat-map of financial panic. "The European Central Bank is in a state of total collapse. The Euro has devalued by 40% since you took the Gold from the Fed. The leaders of France, Germany, the UK, and the rest of the G7 have gathered in Paris. They've declared you a 'Global Economic Terrorist' and are currently drafting a treaty to seize all Icarus assets worldwide."

Alex didn't look up from the black coin he was flipping between his fingers. The coin didn't fall; it levitated, caught in the localized gravity field his System now projected. "Terrorist? That's such an uninspired word. I prefer 'Majority Shareholder.' Sergei, how is the Paris acquisition progressing?"

Sergei, stood at the cockpit door, his eyes reflecting the scrolling red lines of the French stock exchange. "The 'Élysée Protocol' is active, Chairman. We have successfully acquired 90% of the commercial real estate surrounding the Élysée Palace. We've also purchased the Électricité de France (EDF). If you wish, I can plunge the city of light into total darkness before we land."

"No," Alex smiled, his eyes glowing with a predatory gold. "I want them to see me coming. I want the lights to be so bright they can't even look away."

[Location: Paris — The Élysée Palace, Grand Council Chamber]

Inside the gilded walls of the Élysée, the air was thick with the sweat of desperate men. President Jean-Pierre, the leader of France, slammed his fist onto the mahogany table.

"This is an act of war!" he screamed at the German Chancellor and the UK Prime Minister. "He has hijacked the American Federal Reserve! He is buying our infrastructure through shell companies faster than our regulators can even flag them! If we do not freeze his accounts in the next hour, we won't have a continent left to govern!"

"Freeze what accounts?" the UK Prime Minister whispered, his face pale. "He doesn't use banks anymore. He is the bank. Every time we try to block a transaction, his 'Reality Server' simply buys the clearinghouse and fires the board. We aren't fighting a man; we're fighting a hostile takeover of existence."

Suddenly, the massive crystal chandelier in the center of the room began to hum. The light didn't flicker; it turned a deep, resonant Gold.

The windows of the palace, overlooking the courtyard, shattered simultaneously—not from an explosion, but from a sudden, violent shift in air pressure. The Icarus One descended from the clouds, hovering silently mere inches above the historic cobblestones.

The doors of the council chamber burst open. Two dozen Gendarmerie officers raised their rifles, but as they aimed, their weapons simply... dissolved. The metal turned to dust, the gunpowder rendered inert by a localized molecular edit from the System.

Alex King walked in.

He wore a suit made of woven dark-matter that seemed to absorb the very light of the room. Behind him, Sergei and a squad of Icarus Sentinels followed, their boots sounding like the ticking of a doomsday clock.

"Gentlemen," Alex said, his voice quiet but carrying the weight of a trillion-dollar ledger. "I apologize for the intrusion. I understand you were discussing my 'liquidation'?"

President Jean-Pierre stood up, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and sheer terror. "You... you have no authority here! This is a sovereign nation! You are under arrest for crimes against the global economy!"

"Sovereign?" Alex walked to the head of the table, pulling out a chair that had been reserved for the President of the United States. He sat down and propped his boots up on the $500,000 table. "Jean-Pierre, let's be honest. France hasn't been 'sovereign' since I bought your national debt at 6:00 AM this morning. And your military? I just updated the software in your nuclear silos. They now require a fingerprint scan to launch. My fingerprint."

The room went into a deathly silence. The German Chancellor looked at his phone, his eyes widening. "He's telling the truth. The entire Euro-Zone defense grid has been re-routed to a server called... 'Icarus-Primary'."

Alex leaned forward, the golden glow in his eyes illuminating the panicked faces of the world's most powerful leaders.

"I didn't come here to argue with you," Alex said. "I came here to deliver your Pink Slips. As of this moment, the G7 is officially disbanded. The 'Seven Nations' are now 'Icarus Sub-Districts'. You are no longer Presidents or Prime Ministers. You are Regional Managers."

"You can't fire a world leader!" the UK Prime Minister gasped.

"I just did," Alex replied, flicking the black coin onto the table. It spun with a sound like a screaming jet engine. "I've looked at your 'Performance Reviews.' High inflation, crumbling infrastructure, corrupt bureaucracies... your 'Company' is failing. So, I'm doing what any good CEO does. I'm restructuring."

[ACTION: CONTINENTAL RE-ORGANIZATION...] [TOTAL COST: $400 BILLION (Bribes, Debt Buyouts, Infrastructure Overrides).] [STATUS: EUROPEAN UNION ACQUIRED AS A WHOLLY-OWNED SUBSIDIARY.]

"From now on," Alex continued, "the 'Euro' is dead. The 'Pound' is dead. The only currency accepted for food, fuel, and data in this continent is the Icarus Sovereign. And to ensure you all understand your new roles... I've decided to move my headquarters."

Alex stood up and walked to the shattered window, pointing toward the horizon where the Eiffel Tower stood as a silhouette against the setting sun.

"Sergei, the tower is a bit... dated. Don't you think?"

"Agreed, Chairman," Sergei replied. "It lacks the proper 'Density' of your current status."

"System," Alex commanded, his voice echoing out across the city of Paris. "Tear it down. Not with machines, but with Value. Rebuild the Eiffel Tower using the gold I took from the Fed. I want a 1,000-foot spire of solid 24-karat gold. And I want it to act as a Global Extraction Antenna. Every person who walks within its shadow will pay a 'Visual Rent' of one cent per second."

[COMMAND RECEIVED. INITIATING MOLECULAR RECONSTRUCTION...] [COST: $200 BILLION IN PHYSICAL GOLD RESERVES.] [ESTIMATED ROI: $10 BILLION PER DAY IN 'VISUAL TAX'.]

The world watched in absolute horror—and awe—as the iron lattice of the Eiffel Tower began to glow. It didn't melt; it Transmuted. The rusted iron turned into shimmering, liquid gold, expanding and twisting into a new, more aggressive shape—a golden needle that pierced the very heavens.

The people of Paris poured into the streets, their phones recording a miracle they couldn't afford to watch.

[DING! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED: THE CONTINENTAL MERGER.] [ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: 'THE MASTER OF NATIONS'.] [SYSTEM LEVEL UP: LEVEL 5 (GLOBAL SOVEREIGN).] [NEW EXTRACTION RATE: $20,000.00 PER SECOND!] [CURRENT BALANCE: $250,000,000,000.00 (After Mass Acquisitions)]

Alex turned back to the trembling world leaders.

"You have one hour to clear out your offices," he said, lighting a new cigar. "I'm turning the Élysée Palace into a luxury dormitory for my janitors. If you want a job in the new Icarus World Order... I hear the night-shift at my Manhattan plaza is still looking for someone to scrub the floors. Chad Sterling might need a partner."

As Alex walked back toward his ship, the sky over Paris turned a deep, permanent gold. The "Icarus Shock" was no longer a market event. It was the new reality.

"Alex," Lily whispered, her eyes glowing with the data of four billion people who had just received a 'Welcome' notification on their brains. "The United Nations is calling for an Emergency Assembly. They're saying you've violated the 'Human Rights' of entire populations."

"Human rights?" Alex smiled as the Icarus One began to lift off, the golden Eiffel Tower reflecting in its hull. "Tell them I'll buy the 'Human Rights Commission' tomorrow. I've always wanted to see how much a 'Right' actually costs when the buyer has infinite cash."

He looked down at the city of Paris, now a golden grid under his feet.

"Next stop, Lily. I want the Suez Canal and the Panama Canal. I'm tired of paying for shipping. I think I'll just buy the concept of 'Transportation' and charge the world for the privilege of moving."
