Morning came too quickly, as if the night had passed without giving Jacob enough time to rest not just his body, but his mind as well.
The moment his eyes opened, reality settled heavily on his chest, reminding him that it was a new day and with it came the same situation he had no choice but to face. There was no escaping it, no delaying it, no pretending it hadn't happened.
Slowly, he pushed himself up from the bed, his body protesting with the slight ache that lingered from the night before but he ignored it and forced himself to move. He had responsibilities to fulfill, after all he was still Damon's personal assistant, and no matter what had happened between them, that hadn't changed.
He went through his usual routine in silence, preparing himself for the day ahead with mechanical precision as though focusing on small familiar tasks would keep his thoughts from drifting back to things he didn't want to remember.
