**Chapter 55: Blood on the Bell**
The blood sky had been hanging for four days when Dracula Bloodnort decided the school was ready.
He did not arrive with an army.
He arrived alone, walking through the front gates of Willowbrook High as the afternoon bell rang, the Blood Amulet glowing against his chest like a second heart. The red light of the sky seemed to bend toward him.
Students screamed. Teachers froze. The air itself thickened with the smell of iron.

**Willowbrook High – Main Courtyard**
The superpowered teens moved first.
Hikoru's fox-fire flared across six tails. Kenshi Yung stepped in front of the younger students, force barriers already shimmering. Ben (still half-feral from his earlier demon-wolf awakening) growled low in his throat. Wyatt and Jackson flanked Bangu. Lupin, Ignis, Lancelot, and Daniel formed a second line without needing to be told.
Dracula smiled like a man who had already won.
"Children," he said softly. "How brave."
The fight started the way most disasters do — too fast and too loud.
Hikoru launched the first volley of concentrated fox-fire. Dracula raised one hand and the flames curved away from him, absorbed into the Amulet. Kenshi slammed a force wall forward. Dracula walked through it like smoke. Bangu closed the distance with pure physical power and landed a punch that cracked the courtyard concrete. Dracula's head snapped sideways. He laughed, blood already trailing from his lip, and backhanded Bangu hard enough to send him through a brick wall.
Wyatt and Jackson hit him together — steel and soul-mist. Lancelot's water coils lashed. Ignis poured pure flame. Lupin's claws raked black lines across Dracula's coat. Daniel tried to bind him with light constructs.
None of it was enough.
Dracula moved like liquid. He caught Jennifer, the chemistry teacher, by the hair as she tried to pull students inside. One clean motion. The sound of her head leaving her shoulders was wet and final. Her body collapsed. The head rolled to a stop near the memorial plaque.
The teens faltered.
Dracula's voice remained almost gentle. "I only needed one example."
He turned his attention to Mr. Dudley, the English teacher, who had been frozen near the English block doors. Dudley broke and ran, screaming, papers flying from his arms. Dracula followed at a leisurely walk, smiling.
Kevin felt the betrayal the moment it happened.
The Matrix under his skin flared in warning — not white-blue this time, but a sick dual pulse. He spun toward the soccer field just in time to see Keisha, his older sister, the Dark Matrix burning violet-black across her collarbone, grab Ref Cho by the throat. The referee struggled once. Keisha's power wrapped around him like living shadow and they both vanished in a fold of dark light.
"Keisha!" Kevin's voice cracked across the courtyard.
She did not answer.
Hikoru and Kenshi tried to intercept her as she reappeared near the English block, reaching for Mr. Dudley. The two teens hit her with everything they had — fox-fire and force — but the Dark Matrix ate the attacks and spat them back as violet shockwaves that threw both of them across the grass.
Dracula, still chasing the screaming English teacher, glanced back once and laughed.
"Family reunions are always so messy."

**Guardians Headquarters – Private Quarters**
Nathan Moya sat on the edge of the bed with his head in his hands. Vera stood behind him, fingers resting lightly on his shoulders. The usual hunger in her eyes was quieter tonight.
"You're allowed to be tired," she said.
Nathan's voice was rough. "Zayelle is gone. Dracula took her. I felt the moment her presence vanished from the city."
Vera's hands stilled. "The banshee girl."
"Yes." Nathan looked up. "I've known what she was for a long time. I should have told the others sooner."
Vera moved around to face him, kneeling so their eyes were level. For once there was no seduction in the gesture — only something close to care.
"You carry too many secrets, illusion boy. One day they will break you."
Nathan's laugh was short and bitter. "They already have. I'm just still walking."
She kissed his forehead, soft and uncharacteristically gentle. "Then keep walking. I'll be right behind you. Even when you don't want me to be."

**Command Floor**
Ofentse and Loki stood side by side watching the live feeds from the school. The chemistry between them had stopped being subtle weeks ago. Now it was simply there — a constant low current neither of them tried to hide anymore.
"They're getting slaughtered," Ofentse said quietly.
Loki's jaw was tight. "I know."
Steve and Kent — Hercules — stepped into the room already geared up. Cohen didn't waste time.
"You two are on recruitment. Five new signatures just lit up across the network. We need them before Bloodnort or anyone else does."
Steve cracked his neck. "Where first?"
Kent's voice was calm. "Afghanistan. Then we work our way down the list."
---
**Recruitment – The Five**
In the mountains of Afghanistan, a massive Afghanistanian-Japanese sumo wrestler named Takeshi Rahimi stood in the center of a ruined training yard, bare-chested despite the cold. When Steve and Kent arrived, Takeshi simply nodded once, as if he had been waiting. His power was pure mass and immovable force — a living mountain when he planted his feet.
Next was C.J., a thin, tired-looking man in his late twenties who could control tissue — skin, muscle, connective fiber — but had never found a useful way to apply it. He called himself "basically useless" until Kent pointed out that a man who could seal wounds or reshape muscle on contact was the opposite of useless in a war.
Adrian was a fourteen-year-old with corrosive saliva that could melt steel. He was terrified of his own mouth. Steve spent twenty minutes convincing him that fear was allowed as long as he still showed up.
In Malawi they found Karabelo Mzomoya, a quiet young woman whose body could generate controlled propulsion — short, violent bursts of force that let her move like a living rocket. She agreed to come the moment they mentioned the blood sky.
The last recruit was a young woman named Sanaa Okoye from Nigeria. Her power was still stabilizing, but the early readings suggested something tied to sound and resonance. She boarded the transport without asking many questions.
Five new names. Five new reasons the Guardians still had a chance.

**Nathan's Quarters – Later**
Blessing, Zane, and Neo stood in front of Nathan, faces tight with anger and fear.
"You knew," Blessing said. "You knew Dracula was going to take Zayelle and you didn't stop it."
Nathan didn't deny it. "I knew she was in danger. I didn't know he would move this fast."
Neo's voice was sharp. "Why her?"
Nathan looked at each of them in turn.
"Zayelle is a banshee. A death omen. When she sees a vision of someone, that person is one hundred percent guaranteed to die. She doesn't cause the death. She announces it. She is Death's messenger and, in some ways, Death's servant. I have known what she was for a very long time. I was trying to keep her hidden. I failed."
Blessing's hands curled into fists. "What does that mean for her now?"
Nathan's answer was quiet. "It means Bloodnort didn't take a girl. He took a weapon that can tell him exactly who is going to die and when."

**Northern Borderlands – Monster Seed Nest**
Bane Mugabe and Thor Kato moved through the dry grass under the red sky. The satellite readings had led them to a stretch of land that felt wrong even before they saw the hatches.
Thor rested his spear on one shoulder. "Explain it again. What the hell is a monster seed?"
Bane kept his eyes on the ground. "Supernatural seeds. Planted in magic soil. Watered by urine. Healthy urine grows a kind Glimmer. Unhealthy urine grows an unstable one. Someone has been farming them."
They reached the first open hatch.
A being climbed out — light blue skin, solid black eyes, tentacles for hair. It looked like a fully grown man, muscular and wrong.
Thor's grip tightened on the spear. "That thing looks like a grown man. How old is it?"
Bane's voice was clinical. "That's how Glimmer seeds come out. They look grown. Inside they're still children."
The being's mouth moved slowly. "My name...is...Kor...g."
Bane's scanners flickered. "This one is sentient."
Thor exhaled. "Good. I was about to summon a damn lightning bolt stronger than my cum when I masturbate."
Bane looked at him for a long second, then barked a short laugh. "You are the same Thor. The comic relief. Hah."
Korg leaned forward and licked Bane's hand with a long, cool tongue. Thor's eyebrows shot up.
"Hot damn. Is this a female?"
Bane shook his head. "The seeds don't have gender. This one just appears male."
A wet squelching sound rose from deeper in the grass. Thor followed it and stopped cold.
A whole nest.
Dozens of hatches. Most of the emerging seeds were red-skinned, eyes glowing with unstable energy.
Thor's voice dropped. "Those ones are red. What does that mean?"
Bane's face was grim. "Hostile. Whoever planted this knew exactly what they were doing."
The red seeds turned toward them as one.

**Willowbrook High – Final Moments of the Attack**
Dracula finally caught Mr. Dudley near the parking lot. The English teacher was still screaming when the vampire lifted him by the throat and examined him like a curiosity.
"Not the one I wanted," Dracula murmured. "But close enough for a message."
He dropped the teacher — alive, barely — and turned toward the direction Keisha had vanished with Ref Cho and Zayelle.
The teens who could still stand watched him go, bloodied and furious and not nearly strong enough.
Kevin stood in the ruined courtyard, white-blue light flickering around his fists, staring at the empty space where his sister had betrayed him.
The blood sky pulsed once, slow and satisfied.
The real war had stopped pretending to be a series of incidents.
It had arrived at the school gates.
**End of Chapter 55**
