Chapter 3 - The response

## Chapter 2: Something Responds

She did not leave.

Not far.

Every time she stepped away, something inside her… pulled back. Not strong enough to stop her, but enough to make her pause.

So she stayed close.

The plant remained where it had always been. Small. Quiet. Still.

But not empty.

Never empty.

---

She crouched beside it again.

Her movements were slower now. Not as clumsy as before. Still unsteady—but better.

Learning.

That word didn't exist for her yet.

But the process did.

---

Her hand hovered above the plant.

She waited.

Nothing happened.

She lowered her hand.

Still nothing.

She touched it.

A pulse.

Faint—but there.

---

She froze.

Then slowly pressed her finger against one of the thin green extensions.

The pulse changed.

Stronger.

Faster.

---

She pulled her hand back.

The pulse slowed.

---

She leaned forward again.

Touched it.

The pulse returned.

---

She blinked.

Then did it again.

Touch.

Pulse.

Pull away.

Slow.

Touch.

Pulse.

---

"…oh."

The sound slipped out of her without warning.

Her voice.

Still strange.

Still unfamiliar.

But less startling than before.

---

She stared at the plant.

Then at her hand.

Then back at the plant.

---

She tapped it.

Lightly.

The pulse flickered.

---

She tapped it again.

Nothing.

---

She frowned.

Or made a face that would one day be called a frown.

---

She tapped harder.

The plant bent slightly.

The pulse spiked.

---

She froze again.

Then slowly—very slowly—pressed her palm against it.

---

The response was immediate.

A deep, steady pulse.

Not fast.

Not weak.

Just… strong.

---

Something inside her shifted.

Not her body.

Something deeper.

Something that had no name.

---

She leaned closer.

Her head tilted.

She stayed like that for a long time.

Listening.

Feeling.

Existing.

---

"…you…"

The word came out broken.

Incomplete.

But it felt right.

Not fully right.

But closer than nothing.

---

She tapped her chest.

"…me?"

Then pointed at the plant.

"…you."

---

She paused.

Waited.

Nothing.

---

She frowned again.

---

"...no."

That didn't feel correct.

---

She tapped the plant again.

Then her chest.

Then the plant.

Then her chest.

---

The connection pulsed.

Stronger.

---

She froze.

Eyes widening slightly.

---

"Oh."

That one came out clearer.

---

She leaned forward, placing both hands on the ground.

Slowly, carefully, she lowered herself closer to the plant.

Until her face was just above it.

---

She stared.

It didn't stare back.

It couldn't.

But she felt something.

Not sight.

Not sound.

Something else.

---

"…same?"

She whispered.

---

The plant pulsed.

---

Her breath caught.

---

She didn't know why that mattered.

But it did.

---

She sat back quickly.

Too quickly.

She lost balance.

Fell.

---

Her back hit the ground.

Hard.

---

She blinked.

Stared up at the empty sky.

---

"…again."

---

She rolled to the side.

Pushed herself up.

Wobbled.

Almost fell again.

Didn't.

---

Better.

---

She looked at the plant again.

Then at her hands.

---

She reached forward.

But stopped.

---

Slowly… she changed something.

Not in her body.

Not in her movement.

In… intention.

---

She didn't touch it this time.

Just reached.

Focused.

---

Nothing happened.

---

She blinked.

Tilted her head.

---

Then she tried again.

Harder.

---

Still nothing.

---

"…wrong."

---

She leaned closer.

Placed her hand on the plant again.

---

Pulse.

Immediate.

---

She exhaled slowly.

---

"…need this."

She lifted her hand.

"…for that."

---

She tested it again.

No touch.

Nothing.

Touch.

Pulse.

---

She sat there quietly.

Thinking.

Or trying to.

---

Her thoughts were not words.

Not fully.

More like… connections.

Patterns.

---

Touch → response.

No touch → no response.

---

Simple.

Clear.

---

She liked that.

---

So she changed it.

---

Instead of tapping—

She held.

---

Her hand stayed on the plant.

Longer this time.

---

The pulse didn't just stay.

It grew.

---

Slowly.

Subtly.

But undeniably.

---

Her eyes widened.

---

"Oh."

---

She leaned in closer.

Both hands now pressed against the plant.

---

The pulse deepened.

Spread.

Not just inside the plant.

Inside her.

---

Her chest tightened.

Not pain.

Something else.

---

"…more."

---

The word slipped out without thought.

---

The pulse surged.

---

She gasped.

Pulled her hands back.

---

The plant stilled.

The pulse weakened.

---

She stared at it.

Then at her hands.

---

"…I did that."

---

Silence.

---

She blinked.

Then smiled.

---

A small, uncertain thing.

But real.

---

She leaned forward again.

More careful this time.

---

One hand.

Light touch.

---

Pulse.

---

"…more."

---

The pulse grew.

---

She laughed.

A short, soft sound.

---

It worked.

---

She did it again.

---

"More."

---

The plant responded.

---

Again.

And again.

---

Each time—

It grew stronger.

---

Not visibly.

Not yet.

But something inside it changed.

Expanded.

---

She felt it.

Clearly now.

---

Her body leaned forward.

Closer.

Closer.

---

She pressed both hands down.

---

"More."

---

The pulse surged.

---

And then—

Something happened.

---

A shift.

A break.

A change.

---

She froze.

---

The plant moved.

---

Not just inside.

Not just a pulse.

---

A tiny extension.

Barely noticeable.

But real.

---

It grew.

---

She gasped.

Fell backward again.

---

"…it moved."

---

She stared at it.

Unblinking.

---

It didn't move again.

---

But it had.

---

She knew it had.

---

Slowly… carefully… she leaned forward again.

---

Hands shaking slightly.

---

She reached out.

Stopped.

---

"…again."

---

She touched it.

---

Pulse.

---

"…more."

---

The pulse deepened.

---

She waited.

---

Nothing.

---

She frowned.

---

"…more."

---

Stronger this time.

---

The pulse surged—

---

And the plant grew.

---

Another tiny shift.

Another small extension.

---

She froze.

Then leaned closer.

Eyes wide.

---

"…again."

---

This time, there was no hesitation.

---

Hands pressed down.

Firm.

Certain.

---

"More."

---

The response was immediate.

---

The plant pulsed—

And grew.

---

Just a little.

But more than before.

---

She laughed.

Louder this time.

---

It worked.

---

It worked.

---

She didn't understand it.

Didn't know why.

Didn't know how.

---

But she knew one thing.

---

When she wanted—

It changed.

---

She sat there for a long time.

Testing.

Repeating.

Learning.

---

Each time—

The same result.

---

Touch.

Intent.

"More."

---

Growth.

---

Slow.

But real.

---

She leaned back eventually.

Breathing uneven.

---

"…tired."

---

That was new.

---

Her body felt heavy.

Slow.

---

She looked at the plant.

---

It was still small.

Still fragile.

Still… not enough.

---

"…more later."

---

She nodded.

To herself.

---

Then laid back on the ground.

---

The sky above her remained empty.

Unchanging.

Endless.

---

But something had changed.

---

Not the world.

Not yet.

---

But the beginning of it.

---

And at the edge of everything—

Far beyond her understanding—

Something stirred.

---

Not awake.

Not yet.

---

But closer than before.
