Chapter 36 - Chapter Thirty-Six: The Lion Killer

"The Lion Killer! The Lion Killer! The Lion Killer!"

Vocalizations erupted across the settlement to salute the individual who had executed the apex predator threatening their existence. Though naturally reclusive and insular by environmental tradition, the sheer terror of the grotesque spectacle that had unfolded before their eyes—a solitary human severing the head of an absolute beast with his bare hands—compelled them to abandon their standard paranoia. They opened their boundaries to the unfamiliar traveler, revering him as though he were a mythical, legendary entity.

Yet, contrasting sharply with the populace encircling his coordinate, Harten remained entirely unconcerned with their emotional state. He was submerged deep within his inner calculations:

"Irritating... thoroughly irritating. Shall I execute them all? Negative..." A faint, cold smirk touched his lips as he whispered to his systems: "I possess a superior calculation."

He pivoted toward them, fabricating a pale, vacant smile. "Greetings, people... Affirmative, I am the Lion Killer, and I require your assistance."

The crowd assembled around him with desperate eagerness, ravenous to receive his directive; he was their absolute champion now. In a fraction of a second, absolute silence enveloped the coordinates, and the crowd parted to permit the progression of an ancient patriarch leaning heavily upon a wooden cane, stepping with slow, calculated precision. The old man closed the distance, conducting a sharp, analytical evaluation of Harten's silhouette.

The old man exhaled softly, his voice dropping into a quiet register: "So then... what is it you desire, Champion? We shall assist your endeavor to the maximum extent of our parameters."

Harten registered a minor drop in his internal interest metrics, analyzing the situation in complete silence: "Damnation... will they assist my cause with such effortless compliance? I harbored a genuine desire to toy with their anatomy had they opted for refusal."

He responded in a tranquil, steady voice: "My gratitude, old man... I am searching for an iron mine."

The patriarch locked his sight onto Harten, his pupils expanding so violently his eyes appeared on the verge of detonating from their sockets—as though he had never processed the data packet 'iron mine' across his entire lifespan. At that precise microsecond, Harten adjusted his kinetic posture, preparing to sever a sequence of heads instantly based on the old man's suspicious, erratic behavior.

However, the old man questioned in stark disbelief: "Listen to me, Young Champion... what exactly is this 'iron mine'?"

A secondary wave of profound disappointment compromised Harten's mind: "Curse it... Is this world so ancient and structurally backward that zero entities possess operational knowledge regarding a mine?"

Harten recalibrated his speech, stating flatly: "It appears you possess zero data concerning it, old man, but it is of no consequence... I shall temporarily occupy coordinates within your village to personally scan the terrain. However, I harbor a secondary query: Does your settlement fall within the domain parameters of Kinkepi?"

The patriarch released a heavy, lingering sigh. "Negative... Young Champion."

"My gratitude, old man... Can you direct my coordinates to a shelter to log sleep?"

The patriarch extended a trembling, hesitant hand toward the central structure. "You shall log your sleep within my personal residence, for you are a hero, and you warrant the absolute supreme coordinates within this village."

"Very well. My gratitude."

They breached the internal perimeter of the village, and Harten immediately initiated a comprehensive data sweep of his surroundings, synthesizing intelligence. It was an isolated, distant settlement lacking genuine raw resources or notable tactical advantages; yet, its residential structures were in significantly superior condition compared to the surrounding territories, and the underlying order appeared far more organized than the standard "Village of the Weak." Food supplies were abundant despite the minimal livestock presence.

There existed a deeply suspicious, anomalous variable within this settlement. Harten fully recognized that these humans were naive and primitive; however, surrendering the personal residence of the village leader himself to a complete stranger for temporary lodging? That was a massive statistical exaggeration that failed to align with standard human self-preservation instincts.

"Very well... if the equation unfolds according to my structural prognosis, this promises to be exceptionally entertaining."

He reclined his frame upon the bed, retrieved a fresh apple with absolute glacial detachment, and permit a cold smile to trace his lips.

Meanwhile, outside the personal quarters of the village chief and adjacent to the heavy stone perimeter of the fortress wall, the rhythmic acoustic echo of heavy, synchronized footsteps began to approach systematically. The kinetic volume escalated in intensity with every passing second. Approximately twenty human entities were marching toward the fortress wall. Their physical bodies were entirely shrouded in identical, repetitive tattoo configurations in precise alignment—the notorious, infamous branding of the Kinkepi Syndicate.

Standing at the fortress perimeter awaiting their arrival was a solitary old man holding a wooden cane, making zero attempt to conceal his face; it was the village chief himself!

The syndicate soldiers closed the distance toward the patriarch and halted their progression. One among them stepped forward with arrogant, boasting strides. He pinned the old man with a look of absolute disdain, speaking in a coarse, guttural register:

"Very well, you decaying sack of bones... where is this stranger you detailed within the written dispatch?"

The patriarch's fragile, benevolent features withered instantly, replaced by a mask of pure malice and unbridled arrogance. He countered sharply:

"A decaying sack of bones? Maintain your parameters and refrain from uttering such infantile garbage! I, too, belong to the men of Kinkepi—indeed, I am the most operational asset among your ranks! I am the solitary entity who traps the trouble-making vermin in this sector!"

The soldier scoffed with supreme contempt: "You are nothing more than a wretched hound picking up the scattered scraps of my personal labors... Your sole directive is restricted to snaring the small fry, and your anatomy does not shift a millimeter unless I dispatch a directive to you—exactly like a compliant, obedient dog!"

A wave of violent fury surfaced across the old man's face. The veins in his temples and jaw bulged with extreme pressure, and his eyes locked onto the soldier with absolute, venomous hatred: "This day shall mark the hour of your death—"

"Quite enough..." A cold, abrupt voice shattered the argument from above. "Are you two genuinely brawling out in the open like infant children?"

The unexpected voice delivered a violent shock to the entire assembly. Every soldier froze in his coordinates, instantly assuming an absolute high-threat combat posture to locate the source of the acoustic disruption—only to discover a solitary entity evaluating them from the high vantage point above.

Harten stood leaning casually against the stone ledge, pinning them with an absolute, permafrost glare.

He released a slow, bored sigh, his voice echoing with a quiet, terrifying resonance:

"I harbor a profound adoration for severing heads."
