Prologue

September 2018

Nestled in the mountains of the small Bosnian city of Mostar stands a football club called HŠK Zrinjski Mostar.

I came here to trace the footsteps of their rise.

The pitch here is in rough shape—worse than some high school fields back home—and the stadium seats barely a thousand. The facilities are basic, dated, and showing their age.

But this is where they once ran, fought, and dreamed.

Today, those two have become two of the biggest names in world football. Their achievements light up headlines everywhere. Yet here, in this place that shaped them, there's no sign they ever existed.

Rusty iron fences, dull gray walls, patchy yellowed grass, faded graffiti.

I searched every corner, every inch of the grounds, but found nothing—not a plaque, not a photo, not even a whisper of their names. It was as if they'd never set foot here.

I circled the stadium a few times. Over by the training area, a stern-looking coach was putting a group of kids through their paces.

I'd heard the Bosnian league is brutal—full of intense physical battles. It must have been especially hard for them back then, when they were so young and skinny.

After several laps with no luck, frustration set in. I dropped into the stands, defeated.

The setting sun slanted across the barriers, casting dappled light and long shadows over the field. The already rundown stadium looked even more worn and forgotten in that golden glow.

I sat there staring blankly for a long while before finally standing to leave.

That's when an old woman pedaled by on her bicycle. She said something I couldn't catch, so I pulled out my translation app. It read:

"You must be here for them, right? We've known for ages that those two boys were destined to become the brightest stars in the world!"

In the fading sunlight, she smiled, her face creasing with deep wrinkles.

Her eyes drifted toward the distant sky, lost in memory.

Then she spoke again. I hurried to translate:

"I've always treasured that time. Those mornings were always full of hope and sunshine. They brought fresh energy to HŠK Zrinjski!"

"They faced tough times, one hardship after another, but they never gave in. They climbed mountain after mountain until their names were written among the stars!"

"Yes! This is where it all began!"
