Chapter 2 - Shadows Don’t Lie

The rain had slowed to a drizzle, leaving the streets glistening like black glass. Zara Voss sat in the corner of the alley, hugging her knees, trembling. Her hands still glowed faintly with residual shadow energy, tiny tendrils curling in the air like restless smoke.

"What is happening to me?" she whispered, voice hoarse. Her pulse throbbed, as if the darkness in her veins had a heartbeat of its own.

A sudden chill crawled over her neck. She looked up, heart leaping. At the end of the alley, a figure stepped out of the mist—tall, broad-shouldered, cloaked in a dark coat that soaked in the rain. His eyes glinted gold, catching the dim streetlight.

"You shouldn't be here," he said, voice low, controlled, dangerous.

Zara scrambled backward instinctively. "Who… who are you?" Her voice was shaky, but defiance edged her tone.

The man tilted his head slightly, studying her like a predator sizing up prey. "I should ask you the same thing," he said. "The Umbra bloodline… I thought it was extinct."

Her stomach dropped. "Umbra bloodline? What are you talking about?"

He took a slow step forward. "The power you just used—it isn't ordinary. You've inherited something older than this city, older than your world. And it's dangerous. Very dangerous."

Zara's hands shook. She tried to speak, but no words came. All she could feel was… fear. And something else. A raw, strange thrill coursing through her veins whenever the shadows responded to her.

"You're scared," the man said, his voice softer now. "Good. Fear keeps you alive. But it won't protect you from what's coming."

"Coming?!" Zara's voice cracked, her pulse racing. "What is coming?!"

The man stepped closer, rain dripping from his dark hair. "I am Kai Draven. I've been sent… to make sure you survive. Or die trying."

Zara's eyes narrowed. "You're here to kill me."

Kai's lips curved into a faint, cold smile. "That was the original plan. But now… I'm not so sure."

The shadows around Zara twitched. She could feel them responding to her unease, their movement faster, sharper, almost sentient. It was as if they were warning her… or threatening her.

"I don't understand any of this," she whispered, trembling. "Why me? Why now?"

Kai's gaze didn't waver. "Because you are the last of your line, Zara. The legacy of the Umbra is alive in you. And if you don't learn to control it… it will consume you."

The air grew heavy. The mist thickened. The shadows on the walls seemed to lean closer, hungry.

Zara's stomach knotted. She had no choice but to stand, trembling, hands clenched. "Then teach me," she said, her voice firmer now, a spark of determination igniting in her chest.

Kai studied her for a long moment, then nodded once. "Very well," he said. "But understand this—shadows never lie. And neither do I. Some truths… will hurt worse than any enemy."
