The Heart of the Veil's pulse still lingered in Zara's veins. Shadows curled and stretched around her, alive and responsive, as if sensing her every thought. Every step she took made the air ripple with energy, whispering secrets she barely understood.
Kai stood beside her, eyes sharp. "Your shadows have evolved, yes—but evolution is nothing without control. Today, you will train your mind as much as your power."
Zara frowned. "Train my mind? How?"
Lyra stepped forward, silver eyes glowing faintly. "The Veil reflects your fears, your doubts. Your shadows obey your will… but they also reveal your weaknesses. To master them, you must face your own mind—and survive."
Before Zara could respond, the shadows around her shifted violently, forming a maze of darkness. Walls rose, twisting corridors, and dead ends appeared as if the Veil itself had come alive.
"This is your trial," Lyra said. "Navigate it. Let your shadows guide you—but remember: the Night Sovereign is watching. He will try to distract you, to manipulate your thoughts. Resist him."
Zara's heart raced. The maze twisted, pulses of shadow energy reacting to her every movement. Faint whispers curled around her mind:
"Fragile… hesitant… the heir struggles…"
It was him—the Night Sovereign. Closer than ever. Cold, intimate, testing her patience, her focus.
Zara clenched her fists. "I'm not fragile. I'm not struggling."
Her shadows responded instantly, stretching forward, forming protective tendrils, guiding her through the labyrinth. Every corridor seemed alive, testing her reactions, challenging her decisions.
At one turn, she came face-to-face with a shadowed version of herself—taller, sharper, eyes glowing faint green. It smiled wickedly.
"You are weak," it hissed. "You cannot survive the Veil. You cannot master me."
Zara's chest tightened. Fear gnawed—but she forced it down, letting determination take over. "I am not afraid," she whispered.
Her shadows surged, intertwining with the dark version of herself. Power and will collided, twisting around the illusion. Slowly, the shadow faltered, dissolving into mist.
Zara gasped for breath, shadows coiling around her protectively. She had survived the first maze.
Lyra's voice echoed softly. "Well done. But remember—this was only a reflection. The real challenge will come when the Night Sovereign tests you directly."
Kai placed a hand on her shoulder. "Every trial teaches you something. Today, you learned focus, patience, and inner strength. But the Veil—and he—will continue to probe your mind."
Zara clenched her fists, shadows pulsing with her heartbeat. "Then I'll keep learning. I'll keep growing. And when he comes… I'll be ready."
The whispers grew fainter, retreating into the shadows. But she knew they would return—stronger, sharper, more dangerous.
The Veil was alive. The Night Sovereign was watching.
And Zara Voss was not backing down.
