Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The One Who Didn’t Flinch (Lorenzo’s POV)

She wasn't what he expected.

That was the first thing Lorenzo noticed.

When Aurora Romano walked into his office, she didn't hesitate.

Didn't shrink.

Didn't try too hard to impress.

She simply… stood there.

Composed.

Alert.

Watching.

"Sit."

She obeyed.But not nervously.

Not weakly.

Controlled.

Lorenzo leaned back slightly, studying her.

Everything about her was… measured.

Her posture.

Her tone.

Even her silence.

Interesting.

"What makes you think you belong here?"

A simple question.

One he had asked countless times before.

Most people stumbled.

Over-explained.Panicked.

She didn't.

"I don't assume I belong anywhere, sir. I prove it."

Lorenzo's eyes narrowed slightly.

That wasn't rehearsed.

That was instinct.

"Confidence," he said. "Or arrogance?"

"Preparation."

A pause.

Lorenzo felt something shift.

Small.

But noticeable. She didn't try to charm him.

Didn't try to please him.

She answered.

Directly.

Cleanly.

Without fear.

"Most people try to impress me," he said.

"I don't think you're looking to be impressed."

That made him pause.

For the first time.

Lorenzo leaned forward slightly.

Now he was paying attention."I think you're looking for someone useful."

Silence.

Then—

A faint curve touched his lips.

Not amusement.

Recognition.

She understood something most people didn't.

And that alone made her different.

"Can you handle pressure… when it doesn't come from work?"

He watched her closely when he asked that.

Not her words.

Her reaction.

"I don't break easily."No hesitation.

No fear.

Just truth.

That decided it.

"You're hired."

But Lorenzo didn't give things without reason.

Or without control.

"On one condition"

"You don't ask questions."

He watched her carefully then.

Waiting.

Testing.She resisted.

Not openly.

But intelligently.

"I believe every employee deserves to understand their responsibilities…""But if you mean unnecessary interference… then yes. I can do my job professionally."

Good.

She pushed back.

But not enough to cross the line.

"Good."

Decision made.

The next day—

He called her in again.

Not because he needed to.But because he wanted to see something.

And she didn't disappoint.

"You're late."

"I came as soon as you called."

No fear.

No apology.

Just fact.

He tested her again.

"Tell me my next meeting."

She didn't check.

Didn't hesitate.

She answered.

Correctly.

Lorenzo's gaze sharpened.

She memorized it.

Or learned it fast.

Either way—

Useful.

"You learn quickly."

"Only when it matters."

There it was again.

That edge.

That quiet confidence.

And for a brief moment—

Something unfamiliar settled in his chest.

Not interest.

Not yet.

But something close.

When she left the office—

Lorenzo didn't look away immediately.

His eyes lingered on the door.

Thoughtful.

Calculating.

"Aurora Romano…" he murmured.

"interesting".

The name felt different now.

Not just a file.

Not just an employee.

Something else.

And Lorenzo Martini didn't believe in coincidence.
