Chapter 1 - Chapter one :The surge

The morning sun bathed the quiet suburban streets in a golden glow, but inside the Johnston household, chaos was already brewing.

Seventeen-year-old Aria Johnston sat at the kitchen table, her chocolate skin glowing in the soft morning light, hair tied back in a loose ponytail. She rubbed her stomach, a dull ache reminding her that her period had started that morning. A sigh escaped her lips. At seventeen, she knew all too well the discomfort of cramps, but something about today felt sharper, heavier.

"Aria, if you don't eat something, you'll be late!" her mother, Mrs. Johnston, called from the counter, balancing a tray of breakfast plates.

"I'm eating!" Aria groaned, grabbing a piece of toast. Her younger brother, Liam, was already bolting for the door, backpack bouncing on his shoulders.

Her father, Mr. Johnston, adjusted his tie as he grabbed his newspaper for the Daily News office. "You're growing up too fast, Aria. Don't forget we're picking up your grades tonight too."

Aria rolled her eyes but smiled faintly. "Yeah, yeah. I know."

The drive to school was quiet, filled with Liam's humming and the faint sound of traffic. Aria's mind wandered to the dull ache in her stomach, trying to ignore it. She always prided herself on staying strong, on not letting cramps or pain slow her down. But this morning, it felt… different.

By the time she arrived at Riverview High, she barely had time to lock her bike before rushing to class. She greeted her friends with a bright, easy smile:

"Morning, Ella! Morning, Mira!" she chirped, her energy bubbly despite the ache gnawing at her stomach.

Ella, a petite girl with curly hair and glasses, waved back. "Morning, Aria! You ready for history?"

Mira, tall and athletic, smirked. "You'll ace it as usual. You always do."

Aria laughed, feeling a rush of warmth at being around her favorite friends. History class passed in a blur of lectures, note-taking, and light teasing among the trio. But halfway through, her stomach twisted sharply.

"Oh no…" Aria muttered under her breath.

Her period cramps hit suddenly, fierce and unrelenting. She raised her hand. "Excuse me, I… I need to go to the restroom," she said, her voice tighter than usual.

The school restroom was quiet, nearly empty at this hour. Aria closed the stall door behind her and leaned against it, breathing slowly. She tried to calm herself, reaching for a tissue to change her pad.

Then it happened.

The moment her hand touched the sink to steady herself and reach for a tissue, a surge of raw, unimaginable energy coursed through her body. She gasped, fingers digging into the ceramic. The force in her arms, her legs, her core — it was more than strength; it was power she had never known existed.

The sink trembled under her grip. A sharp crack echoed through the restroom — the tissue holder shattered into splinters, clattering to the floor. Aria stumbled back, wide-eyed.

"What… what is happening to me?" she whispered, voice trembling. Her body was alive with electricity, every movement sharp and precise. Her reflexes heightened. Her muscles flexed without conscious effort. Even the pain from her cramps felt replaced by this strange, overwhelming strength.

She looked at her reflection in the mirror. The girl staring back wasn't just seventeen, not just Aria Johnston. She was power incarnate — her chocolate-toned skin glistening with the first signs of something extraordinary.

Outside the school, the world moved as usual. On every screen and classroom TV, Dr. Victor Blanc appeared, calm and composed in his white lab coat.

"Today, we present a breakthrough in human health. My team at Blanc Laboratories has developed a vaccine that will save countless lives and improve human potential. A healthier, stronger future begins now," he said, his voice smooth, almost hypnotic.

Aria's thoughts flitted to the broadcast. She had heard of him — the respected scientist, the man with all the accolades and trust. But right now, her focus was inward, on the sheer force coursing through her veins.

She left the restroom cautiously, trying to act normal. Her friends, Ella and Mira, were waiting outside the classroom.

"Everything okay?" Mira asked, eyebrows raised.

Aria forced a laugh, gripping her backpack straps tightly. "Yeah… just cramps. You know how it is."

Ella gave her a sympathetic nod. "Ugh, tell me about it. Want me to get you some water?"

Aria shook her head, smiling faintly. But inside, her mind was racing. Something about her body had changed — forever. And she had no idea just how far this new power would go.

That day, Aria walked the halls of Riverview High, surrounded by friends and teachers, but a secret surged within her — a secret born of mutation and anomaly, one that made her stronger, faster, and more capable than anyone around her.
