Chapter 14 - Chapter 13: Shadows in the Alley

Twilight draped the city in long, twisting shadows. Naisha moved first, hood drawn low over her silver hair, each step a battle against the pain in her legs and forearms. Blood streaked her cloak and seeped from fresh cuts, overlapping old scars that burned as she moved. Dizziness prickled at the edges of her mind, making each movement a struggle, but she forced herself forward. Arvin followed closely, alert and steady, while Meira trailed behind, eyes wide with worry.

"Keep low," Naisha whispered, gritting her teeth as a sharp twinge shot up her leg. "Even if it slows us, we can't be seen."

The alley seemed almost to breathe around them. Then, from a corner, a hunter stepped forward, sniffing the air. His nose wrinkled at a strange, musky scent, cold-blooded and sinuous, like something that slithered in shadow. He shivered involuntarily.

"There," he hissed to his companion. "The girl… she's here."

Naisha's heart pounded, dizziness tugging at her focus, but she forced herself to move faster, dragging Arvin and Meira along the twisting passageways.

From above, Kael and his best friend watched silently. They had been sent to patrol the outskirts after rumors of hunters attacking travelers. Kael's eyes scanned the alleyways when he caught sight of the girl and her companions moving through the shadows. She moved with uncanny precision—agile, fierce, yet burdened by pain—but her face remained hidden beneath the hood, eyes unseen. He felt a vague pull of recognition, like a memory he could almost grasp but could not.

Suddenly, a hunter lunged for Meira, dagger raised. Naisha stumbled slightly over a loose stone, her injured leg threatening to betray her. Blood trickled down her arms and legs, mixing with the dirt and sweat, and the world swam briefly before her eyes.

"Too much… too much blood!" Meira gasped, panic cracking her voice as she saw the crimson streaks on the cobblestones and on Naisha. She reached out, steadying her friend, hands trembling.

Naisha gritted her teeth, forcing herself upright despite the dizziness. "Keep moving. No time to dwell."

Kael leapt from his perch, grabbing the lunging hunter by the shoulder and twisting him aside. His best friend intercepted a second attacker, giving Naisha, Arvin, and Meira the few precious seconds they needed to stagger forward and gain a few desperate steps ahead.

Kael's best friend glanced at the blood coating the alley, then at Naisha. His nose wrinkled as he muttered, almost to himself, "Do you smell that? That metallic… almost earthy scent?"

Kael frowned. "What?"

"That blood… but it's not just blood," his friend said quietly. "There's something else. Something serpentine… I've smelled it before. Quick, deadly… unmistakable."

Kael's gaze lingered on the disappearing figures, unsettled. That pull of familiarity burned in his chest, unresolved. He had seen something in her movements before, a shadow of recognition—but her identity, her face, her eyes remained hidden.

The hunters recovered, voices echoing through the alleys. "She's fast… but not gone."

Finally, the trio reached a hidden courtyard. Naisha's breath came in ragged gasps, her body screaming in protest. The new cuts added to the old, and the fresh scar partially overlapped another along her forearm. She leaned heavily against a wall, scanning the streets while keeping her hood low.

Arvin glanced at her, worry etched into his face. "Who… who were those men?"

"Hunters," Naisha rasped, adjusting her stance to ease the burning in her leg. "And they won't forget tonight."

From the shadows, the Covenant leader observed, unseen. "Let them run," he murmured, low and dangerous. "It will only make her eventual capture sweeter. And when she falls… the prophecy will claim them all."

And in the dark arteries of the city, shadows whispered of scales, sinuous movements, and a prophecy beginning to stir—tightening its hold around the girl with hidden silver eyes and those she led.
