Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The Edge of Winter

The first snow came early that year.

It fell in the night, soft and silent, blanketing the village in white. I stood at the window of my family's longhouse, watching the flakes drift past the glass, and felt the weight of the coming winter settle in my bones.

Winter was a gift. The vampires hated the cold—it slowed their blood, made them sluggish, kept them in their dens where the weak and the wounded went to die. Winter was when the wolves hunted, when the borders were safest, when the pack could breathe without fear.

But winter was also short. Three months of snow, three months of safety, and then the thaw. And when the thaw came, the vampires would follow.

I had two years. Two years to train, to prepare, to turn the cubs who followed me into wolves who could fight and kill and survive. Two years to become the leader Koren believed I could be.

It wasn't enough. It was never enough. But it was all I had.

---

The training continued through the winter. I woke before dawn, ran the borders with Aldric, and spent the long afternoons drilling the cubs in the clearing. The snow made it harder—the footing was treacherous, the cold bit through even the thickest furs—but I pushed them harder. The vampires wouldn't wait for spring. Neither could we.

By the time the snow began to melt, the cubs were no longer cubs. Renn had grown tall, his movements fluid and precise. Sera had become a terror with the blade, her strikes so fast they blurred. The twins, Kael and Finn, moved as one, fighting back-to-back, covering each other's weaknesses with instincts that couldn't be taught.

And I had changed too. The system tracked my progress, the numbers climbing higher, the skills unlocking in ways I hadn't expected.

The evolution was close. I could feel it, the wolf in my blood pressing against the walls of my skin, waiting to be unleashed. But the system was clear: evolution required experience. Real experience, the kind that came from blood and battle, not training in a frozen clearing.

I would have to hunt.

---

The first kill came on the last night of winter.

I had been tracking the vampire scout for three days, following the trail of blood and ash it left behind as it crept through Red Oak territory. It was young, newly turned, desperate—the kind of scout the elder vampires sent ahead to test the borders, to see if the wolves were still sleeping.

It was alone. It was afraid. And it was mine.

I found it at the edge of the Hollow Creek territory, crouched in the shadow of a dead oak, its eyes burning red in the darkness. It saw me before I moved, its lips peeling back from fangs that still carried the blood of its last kill.

"Little wolf," it hissed. "So far from the den."

I didn't answer. I didn't need to. The system was already humming in my veins, cataloguing the creature's weaknesses, calculating the angles of attack.

[ENEMY: VAMPIRE SCOUT — LEVEL 15]

[WEAKNESS: SOLAR EXPOSURE, WOODEN WEAPONS, WITCH-CHAIN]

[THREAT LEVEL: MODERATE]

I drew the blade Aldric had given me, its edge glinting in the moonlight. The vampire laughed.

"A wooden sword? You think that can hurt me?"

I smiled. "I think you've been hunting wolves for so long you've forgotten what it feels like to be prey."

I moved.

The vampire was fast—faster than anything I had faced in the training ring. But I had been training for this moment since I opened my eyes in this life. I had the memories of a dead man and the hunger of a wolf who had already lost everything once.

The blade took it in the shoulder, a shallow wound, not deep enough to kill. But the wood was old, blessed by the same witch who had taught Aldric the old ways, and the vampire screamed.

I pressed the advantage. The blade came down again, and again, each strike driving the creature back, cutting off its escape, herding it toward the dead oak where I had set the trap.

It saw the chain at the last moment. Its eyes went wide.

"No—"

The witch-chain wrapped around its throat, binding it to the tree, the symbols blazing white-hot in the darkness. The vampire thrashed, screamed, clawed at the metal, but the magic held.

I stood before it, my chest heaving, the wooden blade dripping black blood in the snow.

"Who sent you?" I asked.

It laughed, a wet, gurgling sound. "You think I'll tell you? Little wolf, you have no idea what's coming. The Master has been watching your pack for years. He knows your borders. Your numbers. Your weaknesses. When the thaw comes, he will—"

I drove the blade into its heart.

The vampire crumbled, ash and bone scattering across the snow. The chain clattered to the ground, its magic spent.

I stood there for a long moment, watching the ash dissolve into the frost.

[EVOLUTION AVAILABLE: WOLF SCOUT — DO YOU WISH TO EVOLVE? Y/N]

I didn't hesitate. I pressed yes.

The change came like fire.

It started in my chest, a heat so intense I thought my heart would burst. Then it spread, down my arms, my legs, my spine, burning through every nerve, every muscle, every bone. I fell to my knees, my hands pressed against the snow, my breath coming in ragged gasps.

The wolf was awake. Not the shadow I had carried since birth, not the whisper of instinct that guided my steps. The wolf. Full and fierce and ancient, pressing against the walls of my skin, demanding to be free.

I opened my mouth and howled.

The sound rose into the night, raw and wild, carrying across the forest, across the borders, across the frozen land that would soon be soaked in blood. It was the howl of a wolf who had died and been reborn. The howl of a hunter who would not be prey. The howl of a leader who would see his pack survive or die trying.

When the howl faded, I was different.

[EVOLUTION COMPLETE]

[STAGE 2: WOLF SCOUT]

[STATS INCREASED: +10 TO ALL]

[NEW SKILLS UNLOCKED: MOONLIGHT STEP, PACK HUNT, VAMPIRE SENSE]

[WOLF AFFINITY: 81% → 92%]

[NOTE: The wolf is awake. The hunt has begun.]

I stood, my body humming with power I had never felt before. The snow beneath my feet was melting, steam rising from the prints I left behind. The vampire's ash had scattered, carried away by the wind, but I could still feel it—the echo of its death, the taste of its blood on my blade.

I was ready. Finally, after eleven years of waiting, I was ready.

I turned back toward the village, toward the pack that was counting on me, toward the war that was already beginning. The moon was setting, the sky lightening in the east. Winter was over.

The thaw was coming.

And when it came, I would be waiting.
