Rachel Park walked toward the Student Council's reserved section with unhurried steps. There was no arrogance in her stride, no deliberate display of power. Yet every student inside the auditorium could feel it — the quiet, suffocating weight of her presence pressing down on the air itself.
It wasn't loud or flashy. It was absolute.
The moment she entered, the low murmur of thousands of students dimmed noticeably. The floating lanterns along the ceiling flickered slightly, as if reacting to her passage. Lucas felt his Imp stir uneasily inside his shadow, the little devil's presence rippling like disturbed water. Even the air around him seemed to grow heavier.
His eyes were drawn toward her before he could stop himself.
She was beautiful — strikingly so. Long black hair flowed down her back like liquid silk, catching the lantern light with every step. Her cold, refined features gave her an almost otherworldly appearance, skin pale and flawless under the golden glow. But it wasn't just her beauty that made Lucas's heartbeat quicken in his chest.
It was her presence. It felt like standing before an abyss that could swallow everything without effort. The very air around her seemed thinner, quieter, as though reality itself bent slightly in her wake.
'What a woman…' Lucas thought, his pulse refusing to calm.
Beside him, Yuna unconsciously leaned forward, her pink eyes fixed on Rachel Park. A faint, sweet scent drifted from her — her succubus bloodline reacting subtly to the pressure in the room.
"She's too beautiful…" Yuna muttered under her breath, almost in a daze. Her fingers tightened slightly on the armrest.
Vivienne, who hadn't looked away since Rachel entered, spoke in a low voice.
"That's the difference between her and everyone else here. While others fight for position and power… she already stands at the peak."
Murmurs rippled through the auditorium like wind through leaves. Even the second- and third-year students, who usually maintained their composure, were whispering as they watched Rachel Park take her seat. The scent of various perfumes, mana residues, and nervous sweat mingled in the air.
Not long after, the professors began arriving.
The right wall of the auditorium lit up with bright orange runes. A large summoning circle flared to life with a deep, resonant hum. With a burst of flames and smoke that carried the sharp scent of burning wood and sulfur, Professor Harlan came riding in on the back of a miniature flame tiger the size of a horse.
"HAHAHA! Good morning, you little brats!" he roared cheerfully as the tiger landed on the stage with a heavy thud that vibrated through the floor.
A wave of intense heat rolled across the front rows. Students near the front instinctively leaned back, raising their arms to shield their faces from the sudden warmth. Harlan jumped off with surprising agility for his size, and the tiger dissolved into scattered embers that floated upward before vanishing.
Next, the lights in the auditorium suddenly dimmed. Thick purple mist began seeping in from the left side of the hall, carrying a faint scent of ozone and cold stone.
From within the mist, Professor Sylas Morcant slowly materialized — his body reforming from shadows and dark energy. His sharp eyes glowed faintly purple as he walked forward with a sly, calculating smile.
Several students shivered as he passed, the air around him noticeably colder. Sylas didn't greet anyone. He glanced around the auditorium as if already deciding who would be useful to him, then calmly took his seat.
After Sylas came Professor Ava Whitlock.
Soft, glowing blue-and-white lights drifted down from the ceiling like gentle fireflies, casting a serene glow across the hall. As she walked through the main doors, several translucent spirits materialized around her — some small and childlike, others elegant and graceful. The spirits gently circled her, forming a beautiful, protective halo as she moved—a faint, clean floral scent followed in her wake.
Ava walked with a warm but slightly nervous smile. While her entrance was ethereal and beautiful, it lacked the overwhelming presence that Harlan and Sylas had displayed. Many of the higher-ranked students and faction leaders barely reacted.
Her eyes briefly swept across the first-year section. For a moment, her gaze lingered on Lucas — just long enough for him to notice the subtle tension in her shoulders — before she continued forward and sat down.
Following Ava, several more professors arrived with their own dramatic entrances. Professor Owens entered, surrounded by floating glass vials and bubbling potions that orbited around her like planets, the faint clinking of glass barely audible over the murmurs.
Professor Magnus Holt arrived riding a large mechanical construct that walked on four legs, its joints hissing with steam and glowing runes, the metallic scent of heated oil trailing behind it.
Professor Vespera Kline walked beside a massive spectral wolf made of blue spiritual energy, its form flickering like mist.
Professor Mathew Stunt's footsteps left golden runes that continuously formed and dissolved beneath his feet with soft, chiming sounds.
Then the atmosphere in the auditorium changed completely.
The temperature dropped several degrees. A powerful, sharp pressure filled the hall, making the air feel heavier, almost metallic. As Professor Seraphina Hale made her entrance, dozens of weapons — swords, spears, axes, and daggers — suddenly materialized in the air, floating and spinning slowly.
The faint sound of metal brushing against metal echoed through the hall. Seraphina walked through the center of the floating weapons as they parted for her like loyal soldiers. The weapons followed behind her, orbiting her body as she moved toward the professors' section with calm, confident steps. A cold, steel-like scent lingered in her wake.
Many faction leaders stood up and respectfully nodded toward her. Even Rachel Park gave her a small, courteous nod.
Seraphina walked lazily to her seat, completely unbothered by the attention. She let out a small yawn before sitting down, the floating weapons dissolving into motes of light behind her.
Just as the murmurs began to settle, the space above the central stage began to distort.
A large, circular shadow rift slowly tore open in the air with a low, tearing sound, like fabric ripping underwater. Unlike normal spatial tears, this one was pitch black and seemed to absorb the surrounding light. From within the darkness, Vice Principal Darius Grimwald slowly emerged.
He stood upright with his hands clasped behind his back as he descended from the rift. His long black coat, embroidered with golden runes, swayed gently. His sharp gray eyes swept across the thousands of students below with calm, absolute authority. The temperature dropped another few degrees as he descended.
The shadow rift closed behind him the moment his feet touched the stage with a soft, final sound.
The entire auditorium fell into complete silence. Even the floating lanterns seemed to dim slightly.
Darius Grimwald stood at the center of the stage, his tall frame radiating quiet authority. The temperature in the auditorium seemed to drop another degree as he swept his sharp gray eyes across the thousands of students. For several long seconds, he simply looked at them — the silence so complete that even the faint hum of the floating lanterns could be heard.
When he finally spoke, his deep voice carried clearly through the hall without any amplification.
"Welcome, students of Seoul Awakener University."
He paused, letting the weight of his words settle over the crowd.
"This year's Personal Disciple Ascension Ceremony will be unlike any before it."
He raised one hand. With a low, resonant hum, thousands of black tokens suddenly materialized in the air in the first-year section. The tokens were pitch black, etched with glowing golden runes that pulsed faintly like living embers. With a casual flick of his fingers, the tokens shot forward in perfect unison, stopping neatly in front of every first-year student.
Lucas reached out and caught the token floating before him. It was cold — unnaturally so — the black metal chilling his fingertips the moment it touched his skin. The golden runes shimmered faintly against his palm, and he could feel a subtle pulse of energy coming from within, like a heartbeat.
Darius Grimwald continued, his voice calm but carrying a clear edge.
"This year, we will be using a newly discovered pocket dimension for the selection process. Due to its restrictions, only those at D-rank and below can enter. Because of this, much of what lies inside remains unknown to us."
He looked over the first-year students with a cold, measuring gaze.
"Therefore, this year's trials will take place inside that dimension. The rules and your objectives will only be revealed after you enter."
A heavy silence fell over the hall. Several students shifted in their seats. The air felt thicker, charged with tension.
Darius's voice grew colder.
"However, before you make your decision, there are two things you must understand."
"First — once you step inside, the academy will no longer be able to interfere. There will be no rescue. No second chances. Your life and death will rest entirely in your own hands."
He let the weight of his words sink in. The silence that followed was almost suffocating.
"Second — your performance inside will directly determine your future here. The professors and factions will be watching closely. How you perform will decide whether they choose to invest in you… or cast you aside."
Darius Grimwald lowered his hand. The black tokens in front of every first-year student glowed brighter for a moment, as if responding to his words.
"You have five minutes to decide. Think carefully. This choice may very well shape the rest of your time in this academy."
Rachel Park's eyebrows rose slightly after hearing Darius Grimwald's announcement. She turned her head toward her Vice Leader, Clark, who stood beside her.
"Is he talking about Pandemonium?" she asked quietly.
Clark nodded, his eyes glancing down at the excited first-years below.
"Yes, President. It looks like they're trying to weed out the useless candidates early."
Rachel's jaw tightened.
"I understand the university's philosophy. In a world like ours, survival has to be taught. But sending newly awakened students into a place we barely understand… isn't that pushing things too far?"
Similar reactions spread across the upper sections. Some faction leaders were grinning with excitement, already seeing this as a perfect opportunity to eliminate competitors. Others wore solemn expressions, clearly unhappy with the sudden increase in danger.
In the first-year section, Lucas sat with the token resting in his palm, his expression calm. However, his mind was already moving.
He could feel the weight of several gazes on him. Some were cautious; others openly hostile.
Damien Blackthorn, in particular, was staring at him with a wide, unpleasant grin — as if he was already imagining how he would tear Lucas apart once they entered the dimension.
Lucas's lips curved into a faint, cold smile.
They're all thinking the same thing… If they kill me inside, they can erase a future threat without any consequences.
But instead of feeling threatened, Lucas felt a quiet sense of excitement.
They want to hunt me down to secure their own futures… while I can use them as stepping stones to grow even faster.
His eyes casually swept across the auditorium. He spotted Alex sitting not too far away. His younger brother was also looking in his direction, though his gaze was more conflicted than outright murderous.
Lucas's smirk deepened slightly.
Come then. The more of you come after me… the faster I'll climb.
Just then, Lucas's bracelet vibrated. A message appeared.
Professor Ava:Don't trust anyone once you're inside. A person's true nature isn't revealed when they're tested… It's revealed when they believe there will be no consequences for their actions.
Lucas read the message, then glanced toward the professors' section. Ava was looking at him with clear worry in her eyes.
A small, amused smile appeared on Lucas's face.
Well, well… If I can survive that place safely, taming this one might not be too difficult after all.
He didn't reply. Instead, he simply looked away.
Five minutes passed quickly.
Darius Grimwald's voice echoed across the hall once more.
"The time has come. Those who wish to participate, simply send their intention into the token. It will handle the rest."
One by one, students began activating their tokens. In just a few minutes, nearly seventy percent of the first-year students had chosen to enter. Many of them disappeared from their seats in flashes of golden light as the tokens teleported them away.
Lucas turned to Yuna, Vivienne, and Kira.
"Let's go."
Without hesitation, the four of them activated their tokens and vanished from the auditorium.
On the professor's balcony, Seraphina Hale tapped her fingers lightly on the armrest. Her sharp eyes were fixed on Darius Grimwald.
"Is there a reason for changing the test at the last minute, Vice Principal?" she asked, her voice calm but carrying a clear edge.
Several professors turned to look at Darius.
He met Seraphina's gaze without flinching.
"Desperate times call for desperate measures. I'm simply following the Headmaster's orders."
Seraphina let out a soft, cold chuckle. A smirk appeared on her lips as she leaned back in her seat.
"It seems the politics have already begun to seep in," she said, her tone laced with faint mockery. "How interesting."
Darius Grimwald didn't respond. He simply looked down at the now mostly empty first-year section with an unreadable expression.
The real game had begun.
And not everyone who entered Pandemonium would be coming back.
