Chapter 5 - The Breaking Point

"You… you have strength and determination. You will prevail. Promise me you will return alive."

Karl did not know how to answer. Yet he saw the faith in Duke Lloyd's eyes and felt the weight of those words pressing upon him.

Then came the time to depart.

At the city gates, soldiers, knights, and supply officers gathered. Caravans stood ready to leave. The air was heavy with the smell of metal, dust, and tension. Fear was present… but so was courage, seeping into the hearts of those who refused to retreat.

And so, they left the city, heading toward the camp where the battle that would decide their fate awaited.

Days blurred into weeks, weeks into months. Time lost meaning. The war did not wait politely at the gates—it stormed in without warning. The soldiers' fate was sealed, but the empire's fate rested upon them.

The Emperor's Betrayal

As the war intensified, a new and dangerous problem struck the front lines. The new emperor, Karth, issued a shocking order: to halt all supplies—no weapons, no medicine, no food—for the camps.

It was not poverty. It was deliberate. His men continued to tax farmers and the poor under the guise of supporting the war, yet nothing reached the soldiers defending the land.

The camps weakened. Soldiers starved, the wounded died without treatment, weapons rusted and broke without replacement. Anger spread among the commanders, whispers of betrayal grew louder, but none dared question the emperor openly.

For Karl and Edric, the situation was unbearable. How could they fight while comrades died not by enemy blades, but by hunger and disease?

Elena, serving as a field nurse, saw with her own eyes wounds that could have been healed turn into death sentences.

Ryuo, ever cautious, began to suspect a darker game at court—that the war was not only between armies, but a scheme where suffering itself was profitable. Perhaps even the emperor himself was complicit.

Edric's Fall

The enemy pressed harder, exploiting the weakened camps. Defense became nearly impossible. Amid the chaos, Edric led his battalion into battle, knowing retreat meant collapse of the front.

But the true enemy was not his skill or courage—it was the lack of weapons. Every strike reminded him his sword would not last, his men fought with their bodies more than their steel.

The enemy was armed with new, advanced weapons. Edric's battalion could not withstand the crushing assault. Many soldiers fell, the rest were quickly surrounded.

Edric, the fearless fighter, found himself trapped, exhausted, his sword shattered in his hands.

The shocking news spread: Edric had been captured.

The Storm in Karl's Heart

The news struck like lightning. It was not just a failed battle—it was the capture of Edric, Karl's brother in spirit, the unyielding force of their fight.

Karl's fists trembled with rage.

"Edric… captured?!" he growled, his voice shaking with fury.

Elena, usually calm and hopeful, was broken inside. She could not believe it. Edric was not just a soldier—he was a commander, close to the leadership, holding knowledge of troop movements and plans. He was now a prime target for interrogation and torture.

Ryuo's mind raced chaotically. If Edric was in enemy hands, he would not live long… unless they had a reason to keep him alive.

But the greater question remained:

Where was Edric now? And what did they plan to do with him?

Karl's Fury

Karl stormed into the command tent, ignoring guards who tried to stop him. He shoved them aside like a raging storm, forcing all eyes upon him.

"Edric is in enemy hands! Our army is being slaughtered at the front! And the reason? YOU!"

His voice thundered through the tent. Some commanders looked shocked, others sorrowful, but Karl refused to hear excuses.

"Soldiers are sent to die without weapons, without armor, without even enough food! How do you expect them to fight? At this rate, they will not only lose the battle… they will betray you! And when that happens, there will be no army left to protect you!"

His words cut like a blade. Shame filled some faces, anger others. But the truth was undeniable.

Karl realized quickly—the commanders here were not the true cause. The rot was deeper.

The fury in the commanders' eyes was not directed at Karl alone—it was mixed with helplessness and humiliation. It was clear the problem was beyond them. Someone higher, someone in the palace itself, was deliberately choking the army, leaving them to collapse without support.

One commander spoke, his voice quiet but heavy with bitterness:

"Karl, we are no more satisfied with this than you. But the orders come from above… from the palace itself. No one dares question them. And those who try…"

He did not finish. He didn't need to. The threat was clear. Any man who opposed the emperor or his ministers would not live long.

Karl clenched his fists until his bones ached. He would not allow Edric to be sacrificed to the cowardice of the court. He turned to Ryuo, who had been watching with concern, and whispered with iron resolve:

"If the enemy is within, then we will tear out its roots ourselves."

Edric in Captivity

Edric sat on the cold stone floor of a damp cell, fighting to ignore the pain coursing through his body. He did not know how long he had been imprisoned, but it was clear they did not intend to let him die quickly. They wanted information first.

The heavy iron door creaked open. A soldier entered, his face hard with disdain.

"Remove your uniform. From now on, you are nothing but a nameless prisoner."

Edric did not move. His cold eyes met the soldier's, filled with pride that could not be stripped away.

Two more soldiers entered, tearing the armor from him by force, leaving him in tattered clothes that marked him as a prisoner of war. They dragged him down long corridors, each step echoing in the grand fortress. This was no ordinary prison—it was reserved for those deemed important enough to interrogate publicly.

Finally, the doors opened to a vast hall.

• Ministers and generals in gold-embroidered robes stared at him like an insect.

• The emperor and empress sat upon their thrones, their gazes cold and merciless.

• And in the corner… stood Ryan.

Edric froze. "Ryan?" he whispered.

Shock pierced him like a blade. Ryan was not just a friend—he was like a brother. And now he stood among the soldiers of the empire that had captured him.

What Edric did not know was that Ryan had begged his father, the emperor, not to throw Edric into the interrogation chambers. His presence here was not betrayal—it was desperation.

The Trial of Loyalty

The emperor's voice rang out, calm yet heavy with power:

"So… this is the commander they sent against us? It seems your emperor was unwise to send you here."

Laughter rippled among the ministers. But Edric raised his head proudly and declared:

"If you think I am just a soldier, you are mistaken."

Silence fell. The emperor chuckled softly, then turned his gaze toward Ryan.

"Commander Ryan, since you are of his age, from the same academy, and claim him as an old friend… tell me. What should we do with this prisoner?"

Ryan's eyes widened. His chest tightened. This was no simple question—it was a test of loyalty.

If he defended Edric, suspicion would fall upon him.

If he demanded Edric's death, he would betray his friend.

The world seemed to close in around him.

The Pendant Revealed

Edric, exhausted from a failed escape attempt, was thrown to the ground. A soldier pressed his knee into Edric's back, raising a sword to strike.

But then—a faint metallic sound. Something rolled from Edric's torn clothes and struck the floor.

A pendant.

The hall froze. The empress's eyes widened as she recognized the symbol engraved upon the faded gold. It was a mark known only to a few—the crest of the imperial family.

She rose swiftly, her voice trembling yet commanding:

"Stop!"

The soldiers retreated at once. The empress approached, kneeling to lift the pendant. Her hands shook as she examined it. There was no doubt. This was no ordinary trinket—it was a relic given only to members of the imperial bloodline.

Her gaze locked onto Edric, her voice unsteady:

"Where did you get this pendant? Who gave it to you?"

Edric froze. He had no answer. The truth was simple yet impossible—he had carried it since childhood in the orphanage. He never knew its origin, nor its meaning.

The emperor descended from his throne, the hall silent as death. He took the pendant from the empress's trembling hands, his own fingers shaking as he opened it.

Inside, engraved upon the worn metal, was a single name:

"Edric."

The emperor's eyes widened in shock. Time itself seemed to halt. He looked up at the battered, chained youth before him, his voice quiet but filled with disbelief:

"Where did you get this pendant?"

Edric, though weary and wounded, answered with a steady voice:

"I don't know. When I was a child, I was left at the orphanage with two friends. This pendant has been with me ever since. All I know is that I grew up within those walls, with no memory of my family."

The emperor fell silent, struggling to absorb the words. The empress stepped forward, her eyes brimming with tears:

"You said you were with two friends… were they from our empire?"

Edric shook his head. "No, they were from the other empire."

Shock deepened on the emperor's face, as if the truth was beginning to unfold before him. He exchanged a long look with the empress, then whispered:

"If what you say is true…" His voice trembled with a mix of disbelief and hope. Then he commanded:

"Bring the caretaker. Now."

Moments later, an elderly woman entered—her presence strong, her aura commanding. Years ago, she had been ordered to protect the emperor's child and escape the chaos of war. But when soldiers caught up to her, she had no choice but to entrust the infant to her maid, who fled into the snow. The maid hid the child in a small building near the village of Fuloland before being captured and killed. The child's fate was lost among the dead.

Now, in the present, the caretaker confirmed her testimony. She had last seen the maid near Fuloland. When Edric was questioned separately, he gave the same name—the orphanage was in that very village.

The emperor's voice shook as he listened, something inside him breaking and being reborn. His gaze lingered on Edric, whose features now seemed hauntingly familiar. The empress covered her mouth, unable to believe.

"Could it be… my son?" she whispered.

Edric himself was stunned. He had never imagined such a truth.

The emperor clutched the pendant, recalling the day he was told his infant son had been lost in the war. He remembered the endless search, the years of despair. And now, before him, stood the boy—alive, strong, unaware of his heritage.

"Edric," the emperor said, his voice heavy with emotion, "you are my son… the true heir to the throne."

Ryan rushed forward, embracing Edric with tears streaming down his face. "Brother… you were alive all this time!"

Edric stood frozen, overwhelmed. He had lived as an orphan, a soldier, a friend. Now he was told he was a prince, the lost heir. His heart was torn—between the family he had just found, and the family he had chosen in Karl, Ryuo, and Elena.

The empress, Maria, embraced him tightly, her tears soaking his shoulder. "Edric… my child… life was cruel to steal you from me. But you are here now."

The hall erupted in celebration. Ministers and generals rejoiced at the return of the heir. Yet within Edric, turmoil brewed. Could he truly be a prince after living as a common soldier? Could he abandon the bonds he had forged?

The emperor, sensing his conflict, spoke firmly:

"Edric, now that you have returned, the choice is yours. I will not force you. Decide—will you stay with us, or follow the path your heart has chosen?"

The weight of destiny pressed upon him. The war raged on, and his decision could change everything.

Children of Winter – The Heir's Choice

Edric smiled with confidence, his eyes burning with resolve:

"I am ready, Father. I will not allow this war to claim more lives."

It was time to face his past, to unite his bloodline with the family he had just discovered. The path ahead was dangerous, but if he succeeded, victory would be closer than anyone imagined.

The Reunion in the Shadows

That night, Edric and Ryan slipped through the battalion lines, moving cautiously toward Karl and Ryuo's camp. Darkness cloaked the land, silence heavy with tension, but inside them raged a storm. The mission was perilous, and the truth they carried would change everything.

Karl was broken, grief etched into his face after losing Edric. The army's losses weighed on him, filling him with helpless rage. But when Edric and Ryan appeared before him, he froze, his eyes widening in disbelief.

It was as if time itself had reversed. His heart pounded, alive again with hope. He rushed forward, embracing his friend, while Ryuo stood stunned beside him.

The reunion was emotional, but Edric wasted no time. He had to reveal the truth.

The Revelation

With a steady voice, Edric spoke:

"Karl… Elena… you are not mere orphans. You are the children of the former emperor."

Shock rippled through the camp. Karl's face stiffened, his voice trembling:

"What are you saying…?"

Edric stepped closer, his tone firm:

"Your pendant, your resemblance to the late emperor, Duke Lloyd's words… none of it was coincidence. The former emperor was your father. You and Elena were hidden in the orphanage when the empire fell, kept safe from bloodshed and betrayal."

Karl's breath caught. Deep inside, he had always felt different, always sensed a truth buried beneath his life as an orphan. Now, it was undeniable.

But Edric was not finished. He turned to Ryan, then back to the others:

"And there is more. I am not of this empire. I am the son of the emperor we fight today."

The silence was crushing. The revelation was staggering. Yet it was not a curse—it was the key to peace. Karl, heir of the fallen emperor, and Edric, son of the rival empire, together held the power to end the war.

The Spark of Revolution

Edric's voice rang with conviction:

"Karl, you are the rightful heir. You are the hope to save this nation from collapse."

Ryan stepped forward, his voice steady:

"We can no longer stand idle while Emperor Lieth drags us into ruin. He sees you as tools, but we fight for our future."

The commanders exchanged uneasy glances. The idea of rebellion was terrifying—but the truth was undeniable.

One leader spoke:

"If Karl is the rightful heir… then why not fight for him? Why not reclaim the empire from the tyrant who destroyed it?"

Karl stepped forward, his eyes blazing:

"I did not ask for this destiny. I did not seek the throne. But I will not stand by while corruption destroys us. I will fight—not as an emperor, but as a soldier among soldiers—until we reclaim what was stolen."

The tent erupted in shouts of loyalty. One by one, the commanders pledged themselves to Karl. The revolution had begun.

The Fall of Lieth

At dawn, the allied forces surrounded the imperial palace. Inside, Emperor Lieth waited in his gilded armor, fury and fear burning in his eyes.

Karl and Edric entered the throne hall, flanked by Ryan and Ryuo.

Lieth sneered:

"You think you can dethrone me so easily? I am the emperor. The throne is mine alone!"

Edric crossed his arms, his voice sharp:

"The throne belongs not to thieves, but to those who deserve it. Your reign ends today."

The clash was brutal. Swords rang, steel clashed. Lieth fought with strength, but arrogance dulled his edge. Karl, hardened by years of struggle, fought with precision and determination.

In a decisive moment, Karl struck Lieth down, his blade at the tyrant's throat. Lieth's eyes widened in terror. Karl said nothing—only gazed at him with the authority of a true emperor—before delivering the final blow.

The hall fell silent, then erupted in cheers. The reign of tyranny was over.
