Hearing the plan, Soren's mind clicked into focus.

"What are they collecting all this for?"

Ada hesitated for a beat, then kept going. "Through some kind of tech, they fuse the extracted emotions together. They're trying to grow something made entirely out of mental energy."

"They call it Valried."

Soren's heart gave a hard kick.

That sounded a hell of a lot like what had happened back in the nightmare town.

The black shadow that had blotted out the sky had been doing the same thing—pulling in and storing raw emotion.

Only that place had worked more like a slow pasture, letting feelings settle and accumulate over time.

Here the process was faster, meaner, and running like a factory line.

"What happens once Valried is born?" Soren asked. "What's the endgame?"

They were harvesting and manufacturing massive amounts of negative emotion just to grow this thing. These people had to be after something concrete.

Power? War?

Ada shook her head, voice low. "I don't know. The project's security clearance is sky-high. Everything I could access was just surface-level data and experiment logs."

She paused. "As for the real goal, it's probably buried in the deepest level of this facility. Word is Valried's already been created. Its body is locked down there."

Ada met his eyes. "That's everything I know. Can you get me out of this place now?"

Soren studied her. You really don't know, or are you just feeding me enough to keep me interested? He kept the thought to himself.

Either way, her intel lined up with what he needed.

He played along. "I can get you out. But first you take me to the lowest core."

Ada's face shifted into a carefully measured look of reluctance. "The way down is probably sealed by now. And there could be escaped demons or worse crawling around below—"

"I'll handle whatever's down there."

Soren's tone stayed flat. He already knew how she'd try to steer the conversation.

A flicker of satisfaction crossed Ada's eyes before she smoothed it away. After a moment she gave a tight nod.

"I can only get you to the entrance."

Soren crouched beside one of the dead security officers and pulled a pair of heavy metal cuffs from the man's belt. He tossed them to her.

"Put those on."

Ada's expression stiffened. She looked at the cuffs on the floor, then back at him. "What the hell is this? You don't trust me?"

"You're a researcher who just got arrested. Walking around with me right now screams 'she's compromised.'"

Soren kept his voice even. "Wearing those gives us a layer of cover."

Ada stared at him like she wanted to argue, but the logic held. She knew exactly what he was doing—putting a leash on her—but pushing back would only make her look more suspicious.

She bent down, picked up the cuffs, and clicked them around her wrists without another word.

Soren gave a short nod. "Lead the way."

The puzzle box had flipped the entire facility. What used to be the ceiling was now the floor. They had to pick their way across broken light fixtures and scattered debris.

Soren followed a step behind Ada, eyes scanning every shadow.

A few half-dead mutants were wedged into the walls, whimpering. Human corpses hung from cables, skin blackened and smoking with the smell of cooked meat. One lab was split right down the middle—half of it normal, the other half upside-down like someone had cut the room in two.

Broken containment tanks leaked thick fluid across the floor. Whatever had been growing inside them was gone.

They kept moving until the corridor finally righted itself. No more inverted gravity.

Ada stepped onto solid ground and let out a slow breath, relief flashing across her face.

She pointed ahead. "Looks like we got lucky. A little farther and we hit the decontamination chamber. After that it's the main shaft down."

Soren nodded, but a quiet unease sat in his gut.

Pinhead had been silent for too long.

The only real resistance so far had been a few chains and one Tank. Everything else felt… staged.

A wet, guttural roar echoed from deeper in the corridor, mixed with the sound of a woman crying.

The two of them exchanged a look and moved toward the noise.

At the end of the hall the path sloped downward—the only route to the lower levels.

Ada reached the top of the slope and froze.

The way was blocked.

A writhing mass of monsters and mutated humans packed the ramp shoulder-to-shoulder. Massive, bloated things that looked like walking meat mountains. Pale, spider-like creatures crawling along the walls. And in the corners, several women huddled on the floor, sobbing like their hearts were breaking.

If you ignored the monsters surrounding them, the crying women almost looked normal—raw, heartbroken grief.

But these creatures that should have been tearing each other apart were standing perfectly still, like something was holding them in place. A few banged their heads against the walls in steady rhythm.

"So this is where you've been waiting for me," Soren muttered.

The moment he spoke, every sound in the corridor cut off.

Every monster turned its head at the same time. Bloodshot eyes locked onto him. Low, hungry growls rolled through the passage.

Then they charged.

The ramp turned into a stampede. The monsters clawed and bit at each other in their rush to reach him, trampling anything that slowed them down into paste.

Ada's face went pale. "There are too many! We need to fall back and find another way through!"

Soren rolled his shoulders and cracked his neck. He didn't move.

"Fall back?" He gave a short, cold laugh. "This? This isn't enough."

The Shura Blade appeared in his left hand, but he paused before drawing it. The blade dissolved. In its place, twin swords materialized—one burning with living fire, the other wrapped in howling wind.

Agni and Rudra.

The moment they hit his hands the blades came alive like two overexcited dogs that had been locked in the garage too long.

"Oh hell yeah! Look at all these ugly bastards! Gets the blood pumping, brother!"

The fire blade's hilt spoke first, its demon-head pommel grinning wide.

"Damn right!" the wind blade answered, just as loud. "It's been forever since we got to cut loose! Let's show them what fire and wind sound like when they really get along!"

Soren tightened his grip on both hilts as the horde came screaming up the ramp.
