Chapter 1 - Sunday,14 June ,1942

On Friday,June 12 th ,I woke up just at six o'clock in the morning.

It was my birthday. But of course I was not permitted to get up at that hour , so I had to wait until a quarter to seven. Then I could no longer restrain my curiosity and went straight to the dining room, where I received a warm welcome from Moortje ( the cat ).

Just after seven, I went to my mummy and daddy and then to the drawing room to unveil my birthday gifts. The first to greet me was none but you; probably the nicest of all. On the table, I found a bunch of roses, a plant ,and some peonies and more arrived during the day.

I received a lot of of things from mummy and daddy, and was thoroughly spoiled by various friends. I was given camera obscura , party game ,lots of sweets ,chocolate, a puzzle ,a brooch ,"Tales and legends of Netherlands" by Joseph Cohen, Daisy's " Mountain holiday " (a fantastic book ) ,some money and many other things.

Now I can easily by " Myths of Greece and Rome" - grand!

Soon Lies called for me and together we went to school. During recess ,I offered everyone sweet biscuits, and then we had to go back to our lessons.

I must stop now. Bye -bye ,we are going to be great friends!
