Chapter 2: The Fall
The Abyss didn't look real.
Kael stood at the edge, staring down into it. The ground beneath his feet was solid stone, but beyond that—
Nothing.
No light reached the bottom. The darkness below wasn't just absence—it felt thick, like it swallowed everything that came near it.
Wind rose from below, cold and uneven.
It carried a faint smell.
Rot.
"Move."
A guard shoved him forward.
Kael stepped closer to the edge.
He looked down again.
Still nothing.
"How deep is it?" he asked.
No one answered.
Of course.
The guards weren't here to talk.
They were here to finish a task.
Kael let out a small breath.
He wasn't scared.
Not really.
It was more like… acceptance.
"This is it," he said quietly.
No one reacted.
Behind him, the training ground was far away now. The familiar world—people, noise, structure—all of it felt distant.
Irrelevant.
Kael took one more step.
The edge was right in front of him.
For a moment, he hesitated.
Not because he thought he could avoid this.
But because something felt… off.
The darkness below didn't feel empty.
It felt like something was there.
Watching.
"Jump."
The order came again.
This time, closer.
Kael didn't turn around.
"…right."
He shifted his weight forward.
And stepped off.
The fall was immediate.
No resistance.
No delay.
The ground disappeared beneath him, and the world above vanished just as quickly.
Wind roared past his ears.
His body dropped fast—faster than he expected.
Kael tried to focus, but there was nothing to grab, nothing to orient himself with.
Only darkness.
Complete darkness.
Seconds passed.
Or maybe longer.
It was hard to tell.
His sense of time started to blur.
The air grew colder as he fell.
Sharper.
He could feel it cutting against his skin.
"…still falling," he muttered.
There was no echo.
No response.
Just the sound of wind.
Then—
Something changed.
The darkness shifted.
At first, he thought it was his eyes adjusting.
But no—
There were shapes.
Faint.
Moving.
Below him.
Kael narrowed his eyes, trying to focus.
For a brief moment, he saw something large move across the darkness.
Then it was gone.
His chest tightened.
"…not empty," he said under his breath.
Before he could think further—
The fall ended.
Hard.
The impact shattered through his body.
Pain exploded everywhere at once.
Kael hit the ground with a dull, heavy sound, his vision going white for a second before fading back into darkness.
He couldn't breathe.
His chest refused to move.
His arms wouldn't respond.
Something warm spread beneath him.
Blood.
"…alive…" he whispered.
Barely.
His body felt broken.
Every movement sent sharp pain through him.
He tried to sit up.
Failed.
His arm gave out, and he collapsed back onto the ground.
The air down here was different.
Thick.
Damp.
Each breath felt heavier than the last.
Kael stared into the darkness above.
He couldn't see the opening anymore.
Not even a trace of light.
So this was the Abyss.
No sound.
No sky.
No way back.
He let out a weak breath.
"…makes sense."
This was where things ended.
Not quickly.
Not cleanly.
Just… here.
Something shifted.
Kael froze.
A sound.
Faint.
But close.
A slow dragging noise against stone.
Then another.
And another.
Kael forced his head to turn slightly.
His vision blurred, but he could make out movement in the darkness ahead.
Something was there.
Low to the ground.
Crawling.
His breathing grew shallow.
"…of course," he muttered.
If this place was meant to test people—
Then it wouldn't be empty.
The sound grew louder.
Closer.
Kael tried to move his arm again.
Nothing.
His body wasn't responding.
The shape in the darkness became clearer.
Large.
Too large.
It moved slowly, but each motion felt heavy, deliberate.
Then—
Two faint lights appeared.
Eyes.
Watching him.
Kael let out a weak breath.
"…good timing."
No fear.
No panic.
Just quiet acceptance.
If something was going to kill him—
Better now.
The creature moved closer.
The sound of its body dragging against the ground filled the silence.
Its breathing was low.
Uneven.
Hungry.
Kael's vision started to dim.
His body was already shutting down.
"…go ahead," he said softly.
The creature stopped.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then it moved again.
Faster this time.
Closing the distance.
Kael couldn't react.
Couldn't move.
Couldn't even turn his head fully.
The creature loomed over him.
Its presence was heavy.
Overwhelming.
Kael exhaled slowly.
And closed his eyes.
[Condition Met]
The voice came from nowhere.
Cold.
Clear.
Not human.
Kael's eyes snapped open.
"…what?"
The world around him didn't change.
The creature was still there.
The darkness still pressed in.
But something else had appeared.
[Host status: critical]
[Survival probability: 0.3%]
Kael's breathing stopped.
Words.
Floating in front of him.
Visible.
Impossible.
"…am I… hallucinating?" he whispered.
[Evaluating compatibility…]
The creature shifted again.
Closer.
Its breath brushed against his face.
But it didn't attack.
It paused.
As if something had interrupted it.
[Compatibility confirmed]
The voice returned.
Calm.
Final.
[Initializing…]
Kael's heart started to pound.
Not from fear.
From something else.
Something unfamiliar.
"…what is this?" he asked.
No answer came.
Only—
[Shadow System Activated]
The darkness around him moved.
Not slightly.
Not slowly.
It responded.
The shadows beneath his body twisted, pulling inward like they were being drawn to him.
The creature reacted instantly.
It stepped back.
For the first time—
It showed hesitation.
Kael felt something change.
Inside him.
Not mana.
Not anything he recognized.
But something… deeper.
Something that didn't feel like it belonged to the world above.
The shadows rose.
Thin strands at first.
Then thicker.
Reaching.
Moving.
Alive.
Kael's eyes widened.
"…what…?"
The creature growled.
Low.
Uneasy.
It took another step back.
Kael felt it clearly now.
The shadows weren't just moving.
They were listening.
To him.
And for the first time in his life—
Something answered.
