Chapter 6 - CHAPTER 6: Shadows in the Light

Darkness.

Not night. Not shadow. Something older.

Two figures stood within it.

One knelt.

One sat upon a throne carved from shifting black stone, the surface rippling like liquid obsidian.

"My lord," the kneeling figure said, head bowed low. "The mission is complete. The world is yours."

A soft, layered chuckle rippled through the void.

"You claim victory," the figure on the throne murmured, "as if crushing a dying world required talent."

The kneeling figure stiffened. "I followed your command. I erased their resistance. I—"

"You failed."

The word struck like a blade.

The figure's breath caught. "My king—"

"You let one escape."

Silence. Heavy. Suffocating.

"A trivial survivor," the kneeling figure said quickly. "A pest. He poses no—"

"A pest?" The Hollow King's voice sharpened. "Even in exile, royalty stains the air."

The kneeling figure's face tightened.

Royal.

The word echoed like a curse.

"My king… I did not know."

"You never know," the Hollow King hissed. "You never see. That is why you kneel."

The shadows around the throne curled like smoke.

"Find him," the Hollow King whispered. "Before the Gears stir. Before the Gate remembers. Before he becomes more than a frightened child."

The kneeling figure bowed until his forehead touched the ground.

"As you command."

He rose, cloak swirling, and vanished into the darkness — cursing under his breath.

The Hollow King watched him go.

A thin smile curled across the unseen face.

"Run, little prince," he whispered. "Run while you still can."

The Next Day — Kai

The amusement park was overwhelming.

Lights. Music. Laughter. Movement everywhere.

Kai stood at the entrance, frozen.

Leon grinned. "Welcome to fun."

Aika stood beside them, hands tucked into her sleeves. She looked tired, but calmer than yesterday.

They walked deeper into the park.

Kai stopped.

His breath hitched.

Because in the shadow beneath the Ferris wheel… something stood.

A shape. A ripple. A figure made of smoke and silence.

A Null.

Watching him.

Not attacking. Not moving. Just watching.

Recognition crawled up Kai's spine like ice.

Not again.

Leon turned. "Kai? Hey—Kai, breathe."

Aika stepped closer, voice soft. "What do you see?"

Kai pointed, hand trembling.

But when they looked—

Nothing.

Just shadows.

Aika touched his arm gently. "You're safe. It's okay."

Kai's chest heaved. "I… I saw—"

Leon grabbed his shoulders. "You're with us. You're fine. Probably just stress."

Kai wasn't sure.

The Null's gaze still burned in his mind.

Aika didn't let go of his arm. "You're not alone."

Kai swallowed hard.

Leon forced a laugh. "Alright. New plan. No scary rides. No haunted houses. We start with cotton candy and the merry-go-round."

Kai blinked. "The spinning horses?"

Aika smiled — small, but real.

Leon groaned. "Yes, Kai. The spinning horses."

The three of them walked forward together.

But Kai couldn't shake the feeling.

The Null hadn't followed.

It hadn't attacked.

It had simply watched — as if recognizing something in him.

Something he didn't understand.

Something he wasn't ready to face.
