Chapter 57 - 57: The Mind Beyond the Flesh

The completion of the second implantation cycle did not introduce uncertainty into the palace, because the process had already proven itself once, and when Selene, Sylvia, Stella, and Helene emerged from their regeneration in the days that followed, the confirmation of success did not come as relief, but as expectation fulfilled, their presence returning to full awareness with the same composure that had defined them before, now sharpened by the same underlying stability that Magnus had already observed in the others.

There were differences.

Not in identity.

Not in behaviour.

But in alignment.

Selene's gaze carried the same measured calm, yet her awareness seemed to extend further, her perception integrating multiple layers of information without visible effort, while Sylvia's analytical precision deepened into something more fluid, her thoughts connecting across systems rather than moving through them step by step. Stella's focus refined into a quiet intensity that suggested not tension, but clarity, while Helene's grounded presence became even more stable, her reactions no longer limited by the subtle delays that had once existed beneath the surface of instinct.

Magnus observed them all in silence as they rejoined the others, not as subjects, but as individuals whose foundations had now been reinforced to the point where time itself would no longer act as an eroding force upon them, and for a brief moment, the room held a quiet equilibrium that had not existed before, as though something fundamental had settled into place.

Yet what he had prepared for them did not end with the body.

"Follow me," Magnus said, his voice calm, though carrying a direction that none of them questioned.

He led them beyond the palace interior and into the gardens once more, toward the space where the Anima tree had taken root, its presence no longer subtle, but established, its iridescent leaves shifting gently as the faint psychic field surrounding it resonated with a quiet consistency.

They felt it before they reached it.

Not as pressure.

Not as intrusion.

But as awareness.

Saya was the first to react openly, her gaze sharpening as she stepped into the edge of the tree's influence, her thoughts adjusting instinctively to the new input.

"That's…" she began, then stopped, recalibrating her words as she focused on the sensation. "It's not external. It's like… it's responding."

"It is," Magnus replied.

Shizuka moved closer with a softer expression, her sensitivity picking up the subtle harmony in the field, her presence aligning naturally without resistance.

"It feels… gentle," she said, her voice quiet.

Rika did not comment immediately, though her posture adjusted slightly, her awareness shifting as she tested the boundary of the influence, not resisting it, but understanding it.

Saeko stepped forward without hesitation, her presence settling into the space as though it had always belonged there.

Selene, Sylvia, Stella, and Helene followed, each of them registering the same phenomenon in their own way, their enhanced perception allowing them to recognize what this place represented.

Magnus stopped before the tree.

"This is the next step," he said.

He did not rush the explanation, because what followed required not only understanding, but alignment.

"There are two methods to develop psychic capability," he continued, his tone steady, "structured learning, and natural resonance."

He extended his hand slightly, and the psytrainers he had extracted from the Rimworld world appeared within controlled containment fields, their forms varied, each one representing a specific knowledge imprint, a condensed fragment of psychic technique that could be transferred directly.

"These provide the structure," he said.

Then his gaze shifted briefly to the tree.

"And this provides the growth."

Saya let out a quiet breath, her expression sharpening again, though this time with something closer to anticipation.

"So we get both," she said.

"Yes," Magnus confirmed.

He did not instruct them further.

He did not guide their movements step by step.

They understood.

One by one, they began.

The first psytrainer activated.

The knowledge transferred not as language, but as direct imprint, a controlled expansion of understanding that settled into the mind without disorientation, because their enhanced cognition adapted instantly, integrating what would have overwhelmed a normal human.

Burden - Slow the target for a short time by suppressing motor activity in the brain.

Painblock - Block pain pathways in the target's brain for a short time. This can allow a person to move and act even with grievous injuries which would normally incapacitate them.

Stun - Momentarily disrupt motor function in the target's brain, preventing any movement.

Each ability unfolded not as isolated techniques, but as structured applications of psychic influence, manipulating perception, sensation, and force with precision.

They continued.

Solar pinhole - Generate a microscopic skipgate linked to the core of a nearby star. Solar material leaks through the pinprick in spacetime, illuminating and warming the surrounding area until it closes. The light is enough to work by, but not enough to grow plants.

Chunk skip - Skip the closest 5 chunks of rock or slag to scatter them near the target point. This is useful for producing cover during offensive operations.

Blinding pulse - Induce noise in the visual centers of the brain, obscuring vision of everyone near the target point.

Waterskip - Douse a target area in water, extinguishing fires. The water is archotechnologically skipped from distant bodies of water or underground aquifers.

Neural heat dump - Instantly dump all your neural heat into someone else. As a side-effect, the target will fall into a debilitating but non-damaging coma for about a day. The target must actively accept the psychic invasion, so only conscious allies can be targeted.

Each one expanded their understanding further, their minds adapting, refining, stabilizing as new layers of capability formed without disrupting what already existed.

Magnus observed as they moved through the sequence, not intervening, but ensuring that the process remained controlled, that the accumulation of knowledge did not exceed their capacity to integrate it, though with their current state, that limit had already shifted far beyond what it had once been.

The abilities grew more complex.

Beckon - Psychically command the target to approach the caster.

Chaos skip - Teleport the target to a random position near where it started. Objects above a certain size cannot be teleported.

Vertigo pulse - Interfere with the spatial orientation sense of everyone near the target point, causing intermittent loss of balance. Flesh creatures will become extremely nauseous as well.

Smokepop - Skip dust particles up from under the ground surface to form a thick cloud. This reduces the accuracy of any shot fired through it, and prevents turrets from locking on entirely.

Skip - Teleport the target to a desired position not too far from its starting point. Objects which are too large cannot be teleported.

Focus - Psychically focus the target's mind, boosting their sight, hearing and moving capacities.

The environment responded subtly as they practiced, not through uncontrolled release, but through measured application, each of them testing the boundaries of what they had gained, learning not just the function, but the control required to use it effectively.

Saeko's movements were the most fluid, her control precise, her execution seamless, as though each ability aligned naturally with her perception of space and timing. Saya approached it differently, analysing each effect, optimizing usage, refining the application into something more efficient. Shizuka's focus remained on stability, ensuring that each use remained controlled, her awareness attuned to balance. Rika adapted through repetition, her precision increasing with each attempt, while Selene, Sylvia, Stella, and Helene approached it with the same disciplined focus that had defined their leadership, their control steady, their application deliberate.

The final set followed.

Wallraise - Form a temporary wall by skipping rubble and soil up from deep under the ground.

Berserk - Induce an angry psychosis in the target's mind, causing them to attack anyone nearby.

Flashstorm - Use differential-pressure skipgates in the atmosphere to generate a localized flashstorm. The storm will strike the area with lightning for some time before dissipating.

Invisibility - Psychically manipulate the visual centers of everyone nearby, rendering them unable to perceive a particular individual for a short time.

Berserk pulse - Generate an overwhelming rush of undirected rage in everyone near the target point.

Mass chaos skip - Skip everyone in an area to random positions nearby. Objects which are too large cannot be teleported.

Skipshield - Generate a spherical skipgate that sends all incoming and outgoing ground-level projectiles to some distant place. The process is forceful enough to detonate explosive projectiles. People and items are not affected.

Manhunter pulse - Drive nearby animals into a manhunting rage using a psychic pulse.

Farskip - Skip the caster, along with anyone standing near them, to an ally at a distant location. This can send people far across the planet, but only works if there is a willing ally on the other side to use as a navigation beacon. The skipped people will always appear near a random ally on the target map.

Neuroquake - Find a discontinuity in the psychic field and unfold it, releasing a massive amount of psychic energy. Every creature in range but outside of the safe, inner, circle will be driven violently insane. Casting this takes 12 seconds of meditation, and afterwards, the caster will go into a five-day psychic coma. The disturbing neuroquake echoes will inflict pain on everyone for many kilometers around, causing diplomatic consequences with all factions.

Each ability expanded the scope of what they could influence, from individual targets to entire areas, from subtle manipulation to overwhelming force, yet none of them lost control, because the foundation beneath those abilities had already been secured.

Then they turned to the tree.

Meditation was not taught.

It was understood.

They aligned themselves with the Anima tree, their presence settling into the space around it as the psychic field responded, the anima grass at its base growing denser, brighter, forming a connection that extended beyond simple proximity.

Magnus joined them.

His own presence within that field was different.

Stronger.

More defined.

His Super psy-sensitive nature aligned with the tree immediately, the connection stabilizing at a level that would have taken years under normal circumstances, yet here, within his domain, with the tools he had gathered, time compressed into intent.

The psylink formed.

Then deepened.

Level by level, their connection to the tree strengthened, not through force, but through resonance, until each of them reached the threshold where the connection stabilized completely.

Psylink level six.

Maximum.

The field around the tree expanded slightly, not in size, but in clarity, the connection between them and the psychic layer of reality becoming stable, accessible, and permanent.

Magnus opened his eyes first.

The others followed.

There was no visible change.

Yet everything had shifted.

They were no longer limited to passive enhancement.

They now possessed active influence.

Magnus observed them for a moment, then turned his thoughts briefly elsewhere, because one final task remained within this phase.

He created the xenogerms for his friends and his extended family.

Not the advanced ones. Simpler. Focused.

Just Ageless and Non-senescent genes.

He selected those who he did not want to lose to time yet:

Takashi Komuro.

Rei Miyamoto.

Kohta Hirano.

Asami Nakaoka.

Alice Maresato.

Souichiro Takagi.

Yuriko Takagi.

Mr. Maresato.

Kohta's parents.

Mrs. Komuro.

Tadashi Miyamoto.

Kiriko Miyamoto.

Tajima.

Master Busujima.

Each xenogerm was prepared with the same precision, though without the complexity of the archite-enhanced variants, because this was not about power, but about time.

"This is enough for now," Magnus said quietly, more to himself than to the others.

The rest would wait.

They would not need urgency.

With the combined medical advancement of his empire, life expectancy had already extended beyond two centuries, and with continued research and integration, that number would rise further.

There was no pressure.

No scarcity.

Only progression.

Magnus's gaze lifted slightly, his awareness extending beyond the garden, beyond Thalora, across the systems he now controlled.

Four colonies.

Not even five percent of available space used.

One additional system.

Empty.

More to come.

Overpopulation was not a concern.

Not now.

Not for a very long time.

He returned his attention to those before him.

They stood differently now.

Not because they had changed who they were.

But because they had stepped beyond what they had been.

And as the Anima tree continued to resonate quietly behind them, Magnus understood that this moment marked the completion of something fundamental.

Not an ending.

But a foundation that would not break.
