Chapter 3: The First Exam at the Academy and Balance
The air in the large training hall of the Konoha Academy was warmed by the excitement and tension of dozens of students. The final exam of the first semester of the first year had arrived. This wasn't just a grade; it was proof of who could take the first step on the path to becoming a shinobi. Iruka-Sensei stood in the center of the hall with a grade chart in hand, calling students to the podium one by one.
"The subject of the exam is simple," Iruka said, raising his voice to be heard. "The three basic techniques: Henge no Jutsu (Transformation), Kawarimi no Jutsu (Substitution), and finally, Bunshin no Jutsu (Clone). To succeed, you must perform each one flawlessly."
Our character stood in the far corner of the hall, next to Naruto and Shikamaru. His hands were no longer trembling violently, but he knew he was walking along the edge of that "dark lake" inside him. Since his meditation training with Iruka, the turbulence in his chakra flow had given way to a heavier, denser rhythm. Where it used to feel like a fire was burning in his body, now a cold but disciplined river flowed through his veins.
"What a troublesome exam," Shikamaru muttered, yawning. "Wouldn't doing just a clone be enough?"
Naruto, on the other hand, couldn't stay still out of excitement. "It's no problem for me! I'm going to do them all perfectly, you'll see!" However, Naruto's weakness in chakra control was common knowledge to everyone in the class.
The line moved slowly. When Sasuke Uchiha stepped up to the podium, he performed all three techniques with a flawless elegance. His clones were so realistic that the girls in the class sighed with admiration. As Sasuke stepped down from the podium, his eyes caught our character for a moment. Ever since he had seen that black chain, the seeds of a silent rivalry had been sown.
"Next..." Iruka-Sensei took a deep breath and looked at the scroll. "It's your turn, come forward."
Our character walked toward the podium with slow steps. A murmur rose in the classroom. "Look, there goes the 'shaky kid'," Takeo and his group whispered. "I bet he faints just while making the signs."
The boy stood in the center of the podium. He met Iruka's reassuring gaze. He closed his eyes for a moment and focused on that black lake within him, and the tiny snake, Nen-Hebi, coiled around his finger. In the past, when he tried to use his chakra, his intent energy (Nen) would suffocate the chakra and disrupt the techniques. But now, he had imprisoned his intent in the depths of his body, allowing his pure chakra to rise to the surface.
"Begin," said Iruka.
The boy joined his hands quickly. Ram – Snake – Tiger.
"Henge no Jutsu!"
When a light cloud of smoke dissipated, an exact replica of Iruka-Sensei stood on the podium. But there was a small difference; the transformation was so intense that even the minor stitching errors on Iruka's vest had been copied. The class fell into silence. This was a level of detail far beyond a simple transformation.
"Good... continue," the real Iruka said, hiding his surprise.
The boy returned to his original form and prepared for the second technique. Iruka suddenly threw a training kunai at the boy. This was the Kawarimi test.
"Kawarimi no Jutsu!"
At the moment the kunai was about to strike the boy's chest, he disappeared with a small poof. In his place stood a wooden log with a faint black smoke lingering on it. Our character had reappeared silently from within a shadow at the other end of the hall. This substitution had been so fast and smooth that it was as if he had teleported. That new "relaxation" in his chakra control had reduced the cast time of the techniques almost to zero.
Next was the hardest one, Bunshin no Jutsu. Our character walked back to the podium. This technique required dividing chakra into equal parts, and for someone with such intense energy as his, this was as delicate a task as breaking a glass exactly down the middle.
He took a deep breath. That single black chain link inside him grew heavy like an anchor, balancing his chakra.
"Bunshin no Jutsu!"
Two copies appeared beside him. The clones were not translucent or pale; both breathed like him and smiled slightly just like him. However, in the air around the clones, there was a faint layer of black mist that only those looking very closely could see. This was the intent energy leaking into the clones.
"Excellent," Iruka said, writing a high score in his notebook. "Three for three. Your chakra control has shown incredible improvement."
As the boy stepped down from the podium, the murmuring in the class had changed. No one was mocking him anymore; on the contrary, the "coldness" they felt from him had now given way to a sense of respect. Naruto ran up to him and slapped his shoulder. "Dude! How did you do that substitution? You literally flew!"
"I just... focused, Naruto," the boy said with a slight smile on his face. Indeed, once he restrained the monster within, the basic shinobi techniques began to feel like child's play.
However, the exam was not over. After everyone finished their test, Iruka-Sensei placed a target at the center of the hall. "We will do an extra scoring today. Kunai throwing. But this time, I want you to try and channel your chakra into your kunais."
When it was our character's turn, he took a kunai in his hand. Just as he was about to throw it, a voice rose from within the dark water in his mind. Nen-Hebi slithered down his arm, reached his hand, and touched the kunai. Without realizing it, our character channeled not just his chakra, but also a fragment of that black intent (Nen) into the weapon.
The moment he threw the kunai, the weapon didn't just spin through the air; a ring of black smoke formed around it. When the kunai hit the target, it didn't just pierce the wood; it literally obliterated that section of the board. A black hole, with edges looking as if they had been scorched, had opened in the middle of the target.
The entire hall went cold. This was no longer a "basic technique." This was pure destructive power.
Iruka-Sensei swallowed as he looked at the hole in the target. "Alright... I think that's enough. The exam is over."
Our character looked at his hands as he left the hall. No trembling. But seeing the effect created by that tiny fragment of intent he had channeled into the kunai, he realized once again how dangerous the power within him could be. He had mastered the basic techniques, yes; but he knew that as each of those black chains awakened, he would transform into a monster far beyond these simple exams at the Konoha Academy.
As he walked toward Ichiraku with Naruto, Shikamaru, and Choji, he felt Sasuke's gaze on the back of his neck. The "loser" kid was dead. In the shadows of Konoha, a new prodigy was rising—one with a solid foundation, but a summit shrouded in darkness.
