Chapter 19 - Chapter 19 — Shadows of the Hall

Marvin stepped into the corridor, the glow of the crystal revealing runes etched into the walls. They pulsed faintly, reacting to his presence. The pulse beneath his feet thrummed, steady but insistent, a reminder that the Guest House itself was aware of him.

Halfway down the hall, the shadows stretched unnaturally, detaching from the walls and forming flickering shapes. One hovered near the floor, its edges sharp, flowing like liquid smoke. Marvin raised the crystal. Its glow reached the figure, illuminating a form neither human nor animal, only partially coherent.

The shadow hesitated, then slithered along the walls, observing him. Marvin stepped forward, crystal steady. Its movement slowed, as though responding to his rhythm. Every step he took seemed to influence the corridor—the runes brightened and dimmed, the shadows shifting, testing his reactions.

A vibration ran through the floor, moving toward the far end of the hall. Marvin crouched, placing a hand lightly on the stone. The pulse was subtle, deliberate, a test of attention and precision. The shadow recoiled slightly, its amber flickering eyes narrowing.

Marvin straightened, letting the crystal hum with the house's pulse. The corridor responded. He realized that the hall itself was a teacher—forcing him to anticipate, observe, and act without hesitation.

At the corridor's end, a faint doorway appeared. Its runes glowed brighter, intricate patterns twisting in reaction to the energy around it. Marvin approached cautiously. The shadow lingered near the threshold, following silently, coiling along the walls.

Marvin placed a hand on the doorway. The pulse beneath him intensified for a moment, signaling attention. He pushed the door open and stepped inside. The chamber beyond was empty, but the faint hum of energy felt more insistent.

A small wisp of light drifted from the shadows, hovering near the center. Marvin studied it carefully. Its movements were deliberate, almost communicative. He realized this was not a simple test—the wisp was guiding him, marking a path forward.

Marvin adjusted the crystal, letting its glow illuminate the chamber fully. The shadows receded, giving him space to observe. Symbols etched along the walls pulsed rhythmically, revealing a sequence he hadn't noticed before—a pattern, a code, a potential clue to navigating the West Wing further.

He crouched near the center, tracing the sequence with his eyes. Each runic pulse synchronized with the hum beneath his feet. Marvin's mind worked quickly, piecing together the logic. This chamber was a puzzle, a marker left by the Guest House itself.

He straightened, taking a deep breath. "…This makes sense," he said, voice low. "The house isn't just testing me—it's showing me how to move forward."

The chapter ended as Marvin mapped the sequence in his mind, the wisp hovering beside him like a silent guide. No shadows advanced, no rifts opened. The corridor and chamber waited, alive, responsive, and ready for his next choice.
