Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The Whispering Grove

Lakan didn't stop running until he reached the safety of his small, leaning shack on the edge of the village. His heart was still racing, not from the fight, but from the glowing golden screen that refused to disappear from his vision.

"Is this... an agimat? A curse?" he whispered, staring at the air.

He waved his hand through the golden text. His fingers passed right through it like smoke. No one else in the village had seemed to notice it. To them, Lakan had simply made a lucky throw. But Lakan knew the truth. When he touched Datal-Sira, he didn't just feel wood; he felt a connection.

Lakan sat on his bamboo floor. He looked at his right hand. The skin on his palm, usually raw and red from the lubid (cord), felt different. The callouses were harder, almost like a layer of natural armor.

"Kalyo ng Kaluluwa," he muttered. Callous of the Soul. Suddenly, the screen flickered and a new notification popped up with a soft chime.

[NEW QUEST DETECTED!]

Title: The First Synchronization

Description: Your weapon, Datal-Sira, is hungry for resonance. Return to its birthplace to bond with the 'Spirit of the Grain.'

Location: The Lightning-Struck Balete Grove (The Forbidden Woods).

Difficulty: E-Rank (Dangerous for Level 1)

Reward: +100 XP, Skill: [The Earth's Anchor], 1x Quality Wax.

Lakan swallowed hard. The villagers stayed away from the Balete Grove. They said the Engkanto (spirits) lived there, and the trees themselves had eyes. But Lakan wasn't just a scavenger—he was desperate. If this "System" could help him win the San Roque Fiesta Cup, he could finally buy medicine for his sick grandmother and move them out of this shack.

"Fine," Lakan said, gripping Datal-Sira. "If I could survive Kulas, I can survive a few trees."

The sun was beginning to set as Lakan entered the woods. The air here was cooler, smelling of wet earth and ancient moss. The chirping of the crickets felt louder, almost like a warning.

As he walked, the System began to act like a compass. A thin golden line appeared on the ground, leading him deeper into the shadows.

[Warning: Monster Presence Detected.]

[Enemy: Forest Batabat (Level 2)]

Lakan froze. From the thick canopy above, a creature dropped. It looked like a large, furry lizard with glowing yellow eyes. It hissed, its claws digging into the bark of a tree.

"A Batabat..." Lakan whispered. Normally, he would run. But the System flashed red.

[Combat Mode Initialized.]

[Objective: Defeat the Forest Batabat using 'Patama.']

Lakan didn't have time to think. The creature lunged at him with a screech.

He dove to the left, his reflexes feeling sharper than usual. His hand moved to his waist, grabbing his lubid and Datal-Sira in one smooth motion. In the village, he was just a kid playing a game. Here, the Trumpo was his only protection.

He wound the cord in a heartbeat. Wrap, wrap, wrap, snap.

The Batabat turned for another strike. Lakan didn't wait. He launched Datal-Sira with a downward "Vertical Drop"—the move used to break an opponent's top.

TWAK!

The top hit the Batabat right on its scaly forehead.

[Critical Hit! Damage: 15]

The creature let out a yelp and tumbled backward. Datal-Sira didn't just bounce off; it stayed spinning on the creature's head for a second, the friction burning through the lizard's skin. Lakan pulled the string, and the top hopped back into his hand, still humming.

The Batabat scrambled away, terrified by the strange, glowing weapon.

[Battle Won! +20 XP]

[Stamina -5]

Lakan panted, his eyes wide. "It actually worked. I fought a monster... with a toy."

He continued following the golden line until he reached a clearing. There it was—the massive, blackened skeleton of the Balete tree he had visited a month ago. It looked like a giant hand reaching out of the earth to grab the sky.

Lakan walked to the center of the roots. The System began to glow intensely.

[Location Reached: The Heart of the Grain.]

[System Note: Place 'Datal-Sira' in the center of the strike-mark.]

Lakan knelt and placed the top on the charred wood. Suddenly, the ground began to vibrate. Deep green light flowed out of the tree roots, entering the wooden top. Datal-Sira began to change. The gray, dead wood started to turn a deep, polished emerald color. Small, glowing veins appeared on its surface.

[Synchronization: 50%... 80%... 100%!]

[Evolution Successful: Datal-Sira has reached Tier 1 (Awakened Wood).]

[New Skill Unlocked: 'The Earth's Anchor.']

[Description: Once launched, your top creates a gravitational pull. It cannot be easily knocked out of the circle.]

Lakan felt a surge of energy flow from the top into his arm. He felt stronger, faster. But as the green light faded, a deep, booming voice echoed through the grove—a voice that didn't come from the System.

"So... the scavenger has returned with the King's heart."

Lakan spun around, his hand already on his cord. Standing at the edge of the clearing was a tall man wearing a tattered barong and a wide-brimmed hat. In his hand, he held a top made of pure white bone.

"Don't be afraid, boy," the man said, his eyes hidden in the shadow of his hat. "I've been waiting for a new Grain-Breaker for a long time. But tell me... are you training to win a game, or are you training to save the world?"

Lakan stared at the mysterious stranger. The System flashed a new notification:

[Hidden NPC Detected: The Master Carver (Legendary Rank).]

[Warning: Do not engage in a match. Survival probability: 0.01%.]
