For the first time since Kirigakure forces had appeared along the eastern forests, the mist-covered border was quiet.
Three days had passed since the night attack where a Hyuga chunin had been killed and the mysterious Mist shinobi had appeared and vanished into the fog.
Inside the forward command tent, Fugaku Uchiha studied the latest scouting reports while several jonin waited in silence.
Across the table stood Shinosuke. Beside him sat Shinji Uchiha and Shisui Uchiha, both quietly listening.
A scout knelt in the center of the tent.
"Sir," he said, voice steady despite the tension, "we checked all known Mist patrol routes."
He looked up.
"They're gone."
Choza frowned from the opposite side of the table.
"Gone?"
The scout nodded. "Supply caches abandoned." "Watch points empty." "Campfires cold." "It looks like a full withdrawal."
The room fell silent.
Shinosuke leaned forward slightly. "That's not a tactical reposition."
"No," Fugaku agreed calmly. "That's an evacuation."
Shisui let out a low whistle.
"So the Mist just leaves?"
Choza scratched his beard thoughtfully. "That doesn't happen without a reason."
Fugaku rolled the map closed. "Scouts will continue monitoring the border."
He looked at Shinosuke. "Send a message to the Hokage."
Shinosuke nodded. "Yes sir."
The messenger departed immediately.
Two more days passed.
Leaf scouts pushed deeper into the former Mist territory, expecting traps or hidden ambush forces.
They found nothing.
Every Kirigakure position had been abandoned.
On the third morning, confirmation arrived from Konohagakure.
The message scroll bore the seal of Hiruzen Sarutobi.
Fugaku read it silently before addressing the assembled shinobi. "Kirigakure has formally withdrawn from the war."
.
Shisui leaned back in his chair. "Well." "That's unexpected."
Shinosuke crossed his arms. "That leaves only one enemy."
Fugaku nodded. "Iwagakure."
The commander's gaze moved across the room.
"Our deployment here is finished."
"The Hokage has ordered all Mist front shinobi to return to the village."
Two days later, the gates of Konohagakure opened to admit the returning shinobi from the Mist front.
Civilians watched quietly from doorways and rooftops. War veterans returning home were a familiar sight now.
At the front of the group walked Fugaku Uchiha, with Shinosuke Sarutobi beside him. Behind them came the rest of the unit. Among them was Shinji Uchiha.
The village felt strangely peaceful compared to the fog-covered forests of the eastern border. Within an hour of their arrival, the senior officers had already been summoned to the Hokage Tower.
Shinji followed the group up the staircase toward the top floor.
They entered the office of Hiruzen Sarutobi.
The Hokage stood behind his desk, hands clasped behind his back as he looked out the window toward the village below.
He turned as the shinobi entered. "Welcome back."
Fugaku stepped forward first. "Mission complete, Lord Third."
Hiruzen nodded. "I received your reports."
"Kirigakure's withdrawal changes the strategic situation significantly."
Shinosuke spoke next. "Our scouts confirmed full evacuation."
Hiruzen nodded slowly. "That matches our intelligence." He gestured toward the large strategy map mounted on the wall. Markers indicated the various war fronts. Several had already been removed.
The Hokage tapped the map. "Sunagakure's forces have already been neutralized." He moved his finger across the continent. "And now Kirigakure has withdrawn entirely."
Only one marker remained on the board. A single red piece placed along the western mountains.
"Iwagakure."
Hiruzen continued. "The war has entered its final phase." "The Stone will not surrender easily."
He turned back toward the room. "But their supply lines are stretched thin."
Shinosuke raised an eyebrow. "Are we planning an offensive?"
The Hokage smiled faintly. "Not exactly."
He walked back behind his desk.
"There is already an operation underway."
Several of the jonin leaned forward slightly.
Hiruzen spoke calmly. "A strike team led by Minato Namikaze has been deployed behind enemy lines."
At the mention of Minato's name, several shinobi nodded with quiet respect.
The Hokage continued. "Their objective is the destruction of Kannabi Bridge."
Shinji's eyes sharpened slightly.
The bridge.
He had heard of it during his training under Hiruzen.
And he remembered it from his previous life, how could he have forgotten such a detail. He hid his panic as best he could. But he knew this would spell trouble for konoha later.
A critical supply route used by Iwagakure forces.
Hiruzen continued. "If that bridge falls…"
"The Stone army loses its primary supply line."
Fugaku finished the thought quietly. "And the war collapses."
Hiruzen nodded. "That is the expectation."
Hiruzen looked across the gathered commanders. "Until we receive confirmation of the mission's success, all returning units will remain in the village." "Rest."
The Hokage then dismissed the group. One by one, the jonin began leaving the office. Within minutes, only two people remained in the room.
Hiruzen noticed immediately. "Shinji."
"You have something to say."
Shinji stepped forward slowly.
"Yes, Sensei"
"I want to return to the front."
"You believe you're needed there."
Shinji nodded.
"Yes."
Hiruzen walked slowly around the desk.
"You've fought at the Sand front."
"And now the Mist front."
He stopped in front of Shinji.
"You believe the war will be decided on the battlefield."
Shinji didn't hesitate.
"Yes."
For a moment, the Hokage simply looked at him.
Then he shook his head.
"No."
Shinji's brow furrowed slightly.
"No?"
Hiruzen's voice remained calm. "The war is already ending."
He turned slightly toward the window overlooking the village.
"If Minato's mission succeeds…"
"The fighting will be over before another army can even mobilize."
He looked back at Shinji.
"There is no need to send more shinobi to die."
Shinji stood silently.
Part of him understood the logic.
"You've done enough."
Shinji exhaled slowly.
Then he bowed his head.
"Yes, Sensei."
The doors to the council chamber closed with a heavy thud.
At the head of the table sat the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. To his right sat his son, Shinosuke Sarutobi, Further down sat Fugaku Uchiha, leader of the Uchiha clan.
Across from them sat Shikaku Nara, already studying the maps before the meeting had even begun. Beside him was Choza Akimich
A few other clan heads filled the remaining seats.
And at the far end of the chamber, slightly behind Hiruzen's chair, stood Shinji Uchiha.
Hiruzen allowed the room to settle before speaking.
"Thank you all for assembling on short notice."
His voice carried easily across the chamber.
"The situation on the eastern front has changed significantly."
Several eyes turned toward Fugaku.
Hiruzen gestured toward him.
"Commander Fugaku has confirmed what our scouts suspected."
"Kirigakure has withdrawn from the war."
Choza exhaled slowly. "Well… that's a relief."
Shinosuke leaned forward slightly. "Our scouts confirmed complete evacuation. They left supply camps, watch posts, everything."
Hiruzen stood from his chair and walked toward the strategy map mounted on the wall.
Small markers showed the various fronts of the war. Many had already been removed. The Hokage lifted one of the remaining markers and set it aside.
"With the Mist's departure," he said calmly, "this theater is closed."
Only one red marker remained on the board.
Positioned along the mountainous western border.
Hiruzen tapped it gently.
"Iwagakure."
Shikaku leaned back slightly in his chair.
"So it comes down to them."
"Yes," replied Hiruzen Sarutobi calmly. "For all practical purposes, the war has entered its final stage."
Choza Akimichi glanced at the final marker remaining on the war map. "The Stone won't back down easily."
"No," Fugaku Uchiha agreed evenly. "They've invested too much into this war."
Hiruzen turned back toward the table. "That is why we must end it quickly."
He returned to his seat. But before continuing, his eyes moved toward the young shinobi standing quietly behind him.
"Before we proceed," Hiruzen said, gesturing lightly with his hand, "there is something I should address."
The gathered commanders followed his gaze. Their attention settled on Shinji Uchiha.
Hiruzen spoke calmly.
"Some of you may not know this yet…"
He placed a hand lightly on Shinji's shoulder. "But I have recently decided to take on a new disciple."
A few eyebrows rose around the table. Shikaku Nara's eyes sharpened with mild interest.
Fugaku remained composed, though his gaze lingered briefly on his son.
Hiruzen continued. "Shinji Uchiha will be present in this meeting." "He is here to observe and learn."
The Hokage's tone remained casual, but the meaning behind the gesture was clear.
Being allowed into a war council at this level was no small thing.
Choza raised an eyebrow. "Bit young for war strategy meetings, isn't he?"
Before Hiruzen could answer, another voice spoke from further down the table.
"Age is not the only concern." Several heads turned.
Sitting partially in shadow was Danzo Shimura.
The bandaged elder rested his hands on his cane as his single visible eye studied Shinji carefully.
"In times of war," Danzo continued, "one must also consider loyalty."
Fugaku's eyes narrowed almost imperceptibly.
Shikaku leaned back in his chair, silently observing.
Danzo spoke again.
"The Uchiha clan has certainly contributed much to the war effort." The words sounded like praise. Yet the tone carried something else.
"But historically," Danzo continued slowly, "their interests have not always aligned perfectly with the village."
Hiruzen's expression remained calm, though there was quiet warning in his gaze.
Fugaku said nothing.
But Shinji felt the shift in the room.
And he stepped forward.
Simply placing himself slightly closer to the table.
"May I speak, Lord Third?" Shinji asked.
Hiruzen studied him for a moment. Then nodded once.
"You may."
Shinji turned his attention toward Danzo.
His voice remained respectful.
"Elder Shimura raises an important concern."
Several commanders blinked slightly at that response.
Danzo's eye narrowed faintly.
"But I believe the concern is misplaced," Shinji continued.
Danzo tapped his cane lightly against the floor.
"Oh?"
Shinji gestured toward the war map.
"Uchiha shinobi have fought on every front of this war."
His voice remained steady.
"Many of them did not return."
Fugaku watched silently as his son spoke.
Shinji continued.
"They did not die as Uchiha."
"They died as shinobi of Konohagakure."
Choza nodded faintly.
Danzo remained unmoved.
"Sacrifice alone does not guarantee loyalty," he replied calmly. "History has taught us that."
Shinji inclined his head slightly.
"History also teaches us something else."
Danzo's eye narrowed slightly.
"And what is that?"
Shinji met his gaze.
"That distrust creates the very divisions it claims to prevent."
A faint murmur moved around the table.
Shikaku hid a small smirk behind his hand.
Danzo's cane tapped once against the floor.
"You speak boldly for someone so young."
Shinji did not look away.
"You question the loyalty of a clan that has bled for this village for generations."
He gestured again toward the map.
"If loyalty must constantly be proven, then perhaps the problem is not with those proving it."
A faint tension moved through the room.
Danzo's eye hardened slightly. "Be careful, boy."
Shinji inclined his head politely. "Of course."
He paused briefly before continuing.
"Still it is curious."
Danzo's gaze sharpened.
"How so?"
Shinji's voice remained calm.
"The shinobi most often questioned are the ones fighting on the battlefield."
A brief silence followed.
Then Shinji added, almost thoughtfully,
"While those raising the questions tend to remain safely behind desks."
Choza coughed suddenly.
Shikaku covered his mouth, hiding a grin.
Danzo's grip tightened slightly on his cane.
But he did not respond immediately.
The tension lingered for several long seconds.
Then Hiruzen spoke.
"That is enough."
His voice was calm but final.
Both men and boy fell silent.
The Hokage looked between them.
"Elder Shimura's duty is to ensure the village's security."
He then looked toward Shinji.
"And Shinji's duty is to defend those who serve it."
Hiruzen folded his hands.
"Both perspectives are valuable."
The tension slowly eased.
Danzo leaned back slightly.
"Perhaps."
His eye remained on Shinji a moment longer.
"Time will determine which perspective proves correct."
Shinji bowed slightly. "I believe it already has."
The brief exchange ended there.
Hiruzen opened a scroll and spread it across the table.
"Now then."
He pointed toward the western region of the map.
"As I was saying… there is already an operation underway."
Shikaku leaned forward slightly.
"Minato's team."
Hiruzen nodded.
"Yes."
Several commanders exchanged glances.
The Hokage continued calmly.
"Minato Namikaze and his squad are currently operating behind enemy lines."
Their objective: Destroy Kannabi Bridge.
Hiruzen's finger tapped the map.
"If that bridge falls…"
Shikaku finished quietly. "Iwagakure loses its supply route."
Fugaku added calmly,b"And their offensive collapses."
Hiruzen nodded.
"Precisely."
He looked around the table.b"This war may soon end."
Then Shikaku leaned back slightly. "Well," he said quietly. "Let's hope the Yellow Flash lives up to his reputation."
Behind the Hokage, Shinji returned to his position in silence.
