Chapter 88 - chp 85

The village was too quiet.

Not the peaceful kind. Not the kind that followed a long day of work or a successful mission. This quiet felt wrong, like pressure gathering beneath still water.

Shinji stood at the edge of a rooftop overlooking Konoha, arms crossed as his eyes moved steadily through the streets below. Civilians walked normally. Shinobi followed familiar patrol routes. Vendors opened stalls. Children ran through the roads without fear.

Nothing looked out of place.

And that was the problem.

Beside him, Shisui leaned lightly against the railing, relaxed on the surface, but his eyes carried the same tension.

"You've been staring at nothing for ten minutes," Shisui said.

Shinji didn't look at him.

"I've been watching everything."

Shisui exhaled quietly. "…Yeah."

A pause settled between them before he added,

"You feel it too."

Shinji nodded once.

"It's too calm."

That was all that needed to be said.

Because both of them had lived through war. Through ambushes. Through moments where the world held its breath right before it broke apart.

Shisui pushed himself off the railing with a faint smirk. "Then let's stop guessing."

A beat.

"Let's go tell the Hokage the world's about to end."

Shinji almost smirked.

Almost.

"…Yeah."

They moved immediately.

The Hokage Tower stood tall as ever, but even here something felt tighter. ANBU presence was heavier than usual. Patrol routes overlapped more frequently. The shinobi stationed outside carried themselves with greater alertness.

People were preparing.

They just didn't know for what.

When Shinji and Shisui reached the office, the guards stepped aside instantly. No questions. No delay.

The door opened.

And Shinji stopped for half a second.

Not because of Minato.

Not because of Hiruzen.

But because of who else stood inside.

Jiraiya.

Leaning casually against the wall with his arms crossed, expression unreadable beneath the ease he projected. Older now. Weathered. But unmistakable.

Shisui raised an eyebrow slightly. "…Well. Didn't expect that."

Jiraiya's gaze shifted toward them.

Then he smiled faintly.

"…Shinji."

There was weight behind the name. History. The Suna front. A battlefield where a young Uchiha carved through enemy ranks and walked away with a reputation that spread across nations.

The Red Eye Reaper.

Shinji stepped forward calmly.

"…Jiraiya."

Respectful.

Not overly formal.

But real.

Jiraiya pushed himself off the wall slowly. "Been a while."

"Since the war," Shinji replied.

Jiraiya studied him carefully. "…You grew into the name."

A faint pause followed.

"Not many do."

Shinji didn't respond to that because names mattered less than what came next.

Minato stepped forward slightly, his expression already serious.

"Now that everyone's here…"

The room shifted with his tone.

"Talk."

Shinji didn't waste time.

"The attack is coming."

Silence settled instantly.

Hiruzen's gaze sharpened beneath the shadow of his hat.

"…You're certain."

Shinji nodded once.

"Things are too calm."

A pause.

"No movement. No mistakes. No pressure."

Another.

"That's not stability."

His voice lowered slightly.

"That's preparation."

Jiraiya's expression lost what little ease remained in it. "…For something big."

"Yes."

Minato's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…The masked man."

"Yes."

Silence settled heavily over the room because all of them remembered that night. All of them felt the same instinct clawing at the back of their minds.

Shisui spoke next.

"We've been watching the clan."

A pause.

"The tension hasn't broken."

Another.

"…It's being held."

Hiruzen nodded slowly.

"…By design."

Shinji stepped forward slightly.

"They're waiting."

A pause.

"…For something to trigger it."

Minato exhaled quietly.

"And when it happens."

Shinji met his gaze directly.

"Everything hits at once."

Silence.

Then Shinji spoke again, slower this time.

More deliberate.

"There's something else."

The room stilled completely because his tone had changed.

Not tactical.

Concerned.

"If the masked man knew about Naruto's birth…"

A pause.

"…then what's stopping him from knowing about this."

No one answered immediately.

Because that was the dangerous question.

The one that shifted everything.

Jiraiya's expression hardened. "…Naruto was supposed to be a secret."

"It was," Shinji replied evenly. "And he still found out."

Silence followed again.

Hiruzen's eyes darkened slightly beneath the brim of his hat.

"…You're saying."

Shinji finished the thought.

"This rebellion isn't hidden."

A pause.

"It's loud."

Another.

"It's visible."

His voice dropped lower.

"…Easy to exploit."

That landed hard.

Because now this wasn't just internal instability.

It was bait.

Minato's jaw tightened slightly.

"…Then he's been watching."

Jiraiya added quietly,

"…And waiting for the perfect moment."

Shisui's voice sharpened.

"Which means the attack isn't random."

A pause.

"It's timed."

Hiruzen stepped forward slightly.

"…To maximize damage."

Shinji nodded.

"To divide the village."

A beat.

"To stretch defenses."

Another.

"And to isolate Naruto."

Silence became complete.

Because now they all saw it.

The full picture.

Minato turned away briefly, thoughts moving rapidly behind his eyes before he looked back at them.

"…Then we don't let him isolate Naruto."

Jiraiya stepped forward immediately.

"That's the priority."

No argument followed.

No debate.

Hiruzen nodded slowly.

"The village can survive damage."

A pause.

"…It cannot survive losing the Nine-Tails."

Shinji's gaze remained steady.

"He'll come for him."

Minato answered without hesitation.

"Then we'll be there."

A pause.

"…The entire time."

Jiraiya smirked faintly, though the tension beneath it remained obvious.

"Guess I'm not leaving anytime soon."

Minato glanced toward him.

"…You weren't planning to anyway."

Jiraiya chuckled quietly. "…Fair."

Hiruzen looked between the three of them carefully.

"…Two of you should be enough."

It wasn't hope.

It was an assessment.

Jiraiya cracked his neck slightly. "…If he shows up."

Minato's expression sharpened instantly.

"He will."

Shinji stepped forward.

"I'll handle the clan."

A pause.

"Keep them from fracturing."

"And if it starts," Minato said immediately.

"Contain it."

Shinji nodded once.

Shisui spoke next.

"I'll be with him."

No hesitation.

No doubt.

Hiruzen looked at both of them carefully.

"…You'll need to move quickly."

"We will," Shinji answered calmly.

A pause settled over the office before Minato spoke again.

"Tonight."

Everyone's attention locked onto him.

"We prepare."

A beat.

"Tomorrow…"

His voice lowered slightly.

"…we wait."

Silence followed.

Because now there was no guessing left.

No speculation.

They knew something was coming.

And soon.

Jiraiya looked toward Shinji one last time, a faint grin returning to his face.

"…Try not to steal all the glory this time."

A quiet callback.

To war.

To bloodshed.

To a battlefield where a young Uchiha earned a name feared across nations.

Shinji almost smirked again.

"…No promises."

Shisui let out a slow breath.

"…This is gonna be a long night."

Hiruzen closed his eyes briefly.

"…Yes."

Minato stepped forward, calm and resolute despite the pressure building around all of them.

"Then let's make sure the village sees the morning."

Outside, Konoha remained peaceful and unaware, balanced quietly on the edge of collapse.

Because the calm—

Was almost over.
