Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: Misinterpretation

They moved.

Not fast.

Not blindly.

Every step measured.

The forest had changed.

Subtly.

But enough.

The ground was drier here.

Cracked in places.

As if something had eaten away at it.

Vinh noticed first.

"…This area…"

Hongco didn't answer.

But she saw it too.

"…Less life."

Which meant—

something worse.

A sound.

Ahead.

Not hidden.

Not like before.

Deliberate.

They stopped.

Shapes emerged.

Not from above.

Not from the shadows.

From the open.

Figures.

Humanoid.

Shorter.

Leaner.

Holding weapons.

Crude.

But ready.

They didn't rush.

They spread out.

Forming a loose circle.

Vinh's breath tightened.

"…They're not like the others…"

"…No."

Hongco's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…These think."

A step forward.

From one of them.

It raised its weapon.

Not to strike.

To aim.

Testing.

The others followed.

Not chaotic.

Organized.

Vinh shifted his weight.

Unsteady.

"…What do we do…?"

Hongco didn't respond.

She watched.

Then—

a sharp movement.

Something flew.

A spear.

Not aimed to kill.

A warning.

Vinh flinched.

Hongco moved.

Not forward—

but sideways.

Her hand lifted.

Instinct.

Power surged.

Electricity—

cracked through the air.

Light—

exploded outward.

Flames followed.

Not a blast.

A sweep.

A presence.

The forest lit up.

For a single moment—

everything became visible.

The creatures—

froze.

Their eyes reflected the light.

Wide.

Uncertain.

One of them dropped its weapon.

The sound—

echoed louder than it should have.

Another stepped back.

Then another.

A low sound spread through them.

Not a roar.

Not a scream.

Something… deeper.

Vinh's chest tightened.

"…What are they doing…?"

Hongco didn't lower her hand.

"…They're afraid."

But not all of them.

One figure remained still.

Closer than the rest.

Its weapon still raised.

Its eyes—

fixed.

Not on the fire.

Not on the lightning.

On Vinh.

A pause.

Long enough to feel wrong.

Then—

it made a sound.

Short.

Sharp.

The others reacted.

Not forward.

But down.

Weapons lowered.

Some dropped completely.

A few knelt.

Not in surrender.

In something else.

Vinh's breath caught.

"…They think…"

"…They don't understand."

Hongco's voice was quiet.

Controlled.

"…That's enough."

She lowered her hand slightly.

The light faded.

But the tension—

didn't.

The circle remained.

Not closing.

Not breaking.

Watching.

Waiting.

Vinh swallowed.

"…Are they going to attack…?"

"…Not yet."

Hongco stepped back.

Slowly.

Not turning her back.

Not showing weakness.

"…We leave."

Vinh nodded.

Once.

They moved.

Step by step.

Out of the circle.

No one followed.

No one stopped them.

But the eyes—

remained.

Tracking.

Especially one.

Vinh felt it.

Even without looking.

His left arm twitched.

Harder this time.

More violently.

"…Tch—"

He clenched it.

Forced it still.

For a moment—

he almost turned.

Almost looked back.

But didn't.

Because something told him—

that if he did—

he wouldn't understand what he saw.

They crossed the boundary.

Out of sight.

Out of reach.

The forest closed behind them.

But the feeling didn't.

Not completely.

"…They weren't hunting us."

Vinh said quietly.

Hongco didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"…No."

A pause.

"…They were judging."

Vinh frowned.

"…Judging… what?"

Hongco looked ahead.

Her eyes distant.

"…Whether we are worth fearing."

Silence.

The wind returned.

Soft.

But no longer empty.

Because now—

they knew—

they weren't the only ones trying to survive.

And not everything on this planet—

wanted them dead.

That didn't make it safer.

Just…

more complicated.
