Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: An Unknown Connection

🌙 Chapter 1: An Unknown Connection

It was exactly 2 AM. The city had fallen asleep, but the ICU of City Care Hospital was still awake. The pale yellow light of the tube lights hitting the white walls, the continuous "beep... beep..." of the machines, and the sharp smell of disinfectant—all of it combined to create an eerie silence.

Anaya checked her wristwatch. "Just 4 more hours..." she muttered to herself. Her eyes were heavy with sleep, but her hands were still active—adjusting one patient's IV drip, noting another's temperature, updating a third's file. This had all become a habit for her.

Anaya was a simple girl. No grand dreams, no flashy lifestyle. Her world was limited to her job, her mother, and her small rented house. But there was a strange determination in her eyes—as if she didn't know how to lose to life.

Standing outside the ICU glass, Anaya took a deep breath. "Life... it's so unpredictable," she thought. One moment everything is normal, and in a split second, everything changes.

Just then, suddenly…

BANG!

The ICU door burst open.

"Emergency case!" a compounder shouted loudly.

Anaya immediately sprang into action. "Bring the stretcher inside, quick!" she commanded.

Two ward boys brought a man in on a stretcher. His entire shirt was soaked in blood. There was a deep wound on his arm, and his forehead looked busted. But the strange thing was that his face was completely calm—as if he felt no pain at all.

"Check the vitals!" Anaya said without wasting a second.

"BP is low, madam... pulse is weak..." a nurse quickly reported.

"Start an IV line. Give him an oxygen mask. Hurry!"

The room suddenly sprang to life. Everyone was doing their job. But Anaya's eyes kept drifting back to the man's face.

His jawline was sharp, his skin wheatish but clear, and even with his eyes closed, there was a strange confidence about him. As if this man was not ordinary.

"What's his name?" Anaya asked.

The ward boy shook his head. "Don't know, madam. Found him near the road. The police have been informed."

Anaya frowned slightly. "Unknown patient..."

She adjusted her gloves, walked over to the patient, and held his hand. His hand was cold... but the grip was strong.

Suddenly…

The man's finger twitched slightly.

Anaya's heart stopped for a second.

"Wait… he moved!" she said.

Everyone's eyes fixed on him.

The man's eyes slowly began to open. Deep, dark eyes... like lamps burning in the dark.

Anaya felt almost lost in his eyes.

"Sir, can you hear me?" she asked softly.

The man just looked at her for a few seconds. As if something was going on behind his eyes—some memories, some secrets.

Then, in a very faint voice, he said—

"You…"

Anaya leaned closer.

"…are you going to save me... or ruin my life…?"

Anaya's heart pounded.

"What?" she asked, confused.

But the man closed his eyes again.

Silence fell over the room once more.

"Strange…" Anaya murmured.

"Madam, he probably just said something in shock," a nurse said.

Anaya nodded, but her mind wouldn't accept it.

Those weren't just random words… there was a strange certainty in his voice.

As if he already knew her.

2 hours later…

The patient was stable. The dressing was done, the bleeding was under control. The doctors had provided temporary relief.

Anaya closed her file and stood near the patient.

"Who are you…" she said softly.

She looked at his face carefully.

There was something different about this man.

Not just his personality… but his presence.

Like he wasn't even a part of the ordinary world.

Just then, there was a slight commotion outside the ICU.

Two police officers walked in.

"Who is the duty nurse?" they asked.

"I am," Anaya replied.

"The patient's condition?"

"He is stable for now. But unconscious."

One officer looked at the patient, then turned to Anaya and said—

"This man's name is probably Kabir… Kabir Malhotra."

Anaya repeated the name—"Kabir…"

The moment she heard the name, a strange feeling washed over her heart.

As if she had heard this name somewhere before.

"Who is he?" she asked.

The officer hesitated a bit, then said—

"It would be better if you don't get too involved in this. This is not a normal case."

Anaya's curiosity grew even more.

"Meaning?"

The officer didn't give a direct answer.

"Just do your job, nurse. We will handle the rest."

The policemen left.

But now, only one name was spinning in Anaya's mind—

Kabir Malhotra...

Morning was breaking.

Anaya's shift was about to end.

She picked up her bag and was just about to leave the ICU… when she turned around and looked at the patient one more time.

Kabir was sleeping peacefully.

As if that conversation from the night never even happened.

Anaya said softly—

"Who are you, Kabir…?"

She herself didn't know that this wasn't just a patient...

This was going to be the biggest turning point of her life.

Stepping outside the hospital, Anaya breathed in the fresh air.

The sun was rising.

A new morning… a new beginning.

But she had absolutely no idea…

That her life was no longer going to remain normal.

With the arrival of Kabir Malhotra…

Everything was about to change.

Love too…

Pain too…

And a truth…

That would shake her entire world.

To be continued…
