Chapter 5 - Chapter 4: Watching Eyes

As they drive back from the hotel, Ebiel notices a car behind them… sticking too close, almost like it's tailing them.

He presses the gas. Changes lanes. Takes another street just to be sure.

The car stays.

He doesn't say a word.

His eyes remain locked on the rearview mirror.

After a few minutes of silence, Thomas breaks it:

Thomas: Why didn't you go to the hospital today?

Ebiel: Took a day off. I'll drop you home—I've got something to handle. Sit tight… you won't get bored with that damn phone anyway.

By the way, there's a new version of our favorite childhood game. When I get back, we'll play—like old times.

Thomas (mocking): That boring game? It's trash now. Nothing special about it anymore. Bad graphics, bad translation, low quality… it's garbage.

Ebiel: Really? Weren't you the one waiting all week just to play it?

Thomas: Now there are hundreds of better games to kill the routine.

Ebiel (sarcastic): Kill the routine? Maybe.

But you're wasting half your life on them. Ten hours a day staring at screens… and you call that "breaking routine."

Thomas: I don't feel like going home. I'm coming with you.

Kinda sick of screens anyway… and yeah, you're right.

Ebiel: Fine.

Ebiel stops the car in front of a care home.

Thomas: This your job?

Ebiel: Yeah.

Thomas (mocking): What are you doing here? Side job? Not getting paid enough or what?

Ebiel doesn't answer. He heads upstairs.

He knocks… then walks in.

Ebiel: Morning, Chibs.

Thomas: Who's that?

Ebiel: Sit down and shut up. He's a friend of our father…

He's got dementia now.

Thomas (angry): Fuck him. Don't mention him in front of me again.

For the first time, Chibs turns.

His eyes lock onto Thomas—filled with anger… with hatred.

Then he turns back to the window.

Ebiel freezes.

Ebiel: Can you believe this, Thomas?

This is the first time he's ever reacted. I've been visiting him for fifty-nine days… and today—just today—he turns.

I don't believe it…

Chibs takes a slow breath… then speaks while staring outside:

Chibs: Who are you…?

Your face… it feels familiar… who are you?

Ebiel stands there, stunned.

Ebiel: I'm… the son of your friend. Jax.

Chibs frowns.

Chibs: Jax…?

I don't remember anyone by that name.

Thomas explodes:

Thomas: Fuck him! Don't talk about that bastard in front of me!

He kicks the door open and storms out.

Ebiel stands there, breathing unevenly.

Ebiel (to himself): That's my brother… the opposite of me.

He hates our father because he believes Nero.

But I know Nero is trying to keep us away.

My father… I know the man he really was.

He did everything for us… for everyone.

I didn't come here to dig up the past…

I came to face it.

I know you don't understand me…

But you were the closest person to him.

A tear slips down Chibs' eye. He tries to hold it back… but fails.

Then, for the second time, he speaks:

Chibs: You look just like him…

But you're not him , And that's what scares me.
