Chapter 269 - Chapter 269: When Nightmares Learn to Dream

Silence.

The Forgotten Dream's question lingered across the Sea of Possibilities.

"...Can an ending..."

"...also become a beginning?"

No one answered.

Not Orion.

Not the Keeper.

Not even the Last Observer.

For countless ages, they had believed they understood the First Nightmare. They had watched it consume possibilities before they were born. They had seen civilizations vanish before they could even dream of existing.

Never...

Not once...

Had it asked a question.

It had only spoken conclusions.

Now...

For the first time since the dawn of existence...

It was uncertain.

The tiny golden seed continued floating inside the endless darkness.

It should have been devoured.

Instead, it drifted gently through the black void like a lone lantern on a moonless sea.

The Forgotten Dream stared at it.

"...Warm..."

Its whisper barely reached Kael.

The child smiled hopefully.

"It is."

The darkness trembled.

"...I don't remember..."

"...warmth."

The child slowly walked forward.

Orion instinctively reached out.

"No."

The child gently shook its head.

"It's alright."

"You told me once..."

It looked at Orion.

"...that every lonely heart deserves someone willing to take the first step."

Orion lowered his hand.

A nostalgic smile appeared on his face.

"So you remembered."

The child laughed softly.

"I remember everything you taught me."

With tiny, careful steps, the child approached the edge of the darkness.

The Forgotten Dream did not move.

The countless black currents surrounding it slowly calmed.

The child stretched out one small hand.

"Would you like to hold it?"

The golden seed rested upon its palm.

The Forgotten Dream remained silent.

"...If I touch it..."

"...it will disappear."

The child's smile remained bright.

"Maybe."

"Maybe not."

"You won't know unless you try."

Those words echoed across the Fifth Lock.

Kael suddenly realized...

That was exactly what hope meant.

Not certainty.

Not guarantees.

Simply...

Trying anyway.

The Last Observer watched everything unfold.

For the first time...

Its countless calculations failed to produce an answer.

The Watcher spoke.

**"Probability of success..."**

The sentence stopped midway.

The silver eyes flickered.

No percentage appeared.

No prediction followed.

Because no calculation existed.

Hope could not be measured before someone chose it.

The Forgotten Dream slowly extended what resembled a hand.

Not flesh.

Not shadow.

Only flowing darkness shaped like one.

It hesitated only inches away from the seed.

"...I..."

"...am afraid."

The words stunned everyone.

The being that had devoured endless possibilities...

Was afraid.

The child blinked.

"Of what?"

"...If I dream..."

"...and lose it..."

"...I'll be alone again."

Kael quietly stepped beside the child.

He looked at the endless darkness without hostility.

"I was afraid too."

The Forgotten Dream slowly turned toward him.

"When I lost people..."

"I thought the only way to stop hurting..."

"...was to stop caring."

He smiled sadly.

"But every time I met someone new..."

"I cared again."

"Even knowing I'd lose them someday."

The darkness remained silent.

Kael continued.

"Not because I enjoy pain."

"But because they're worth it."

The Sea of Possibilities brightened.

Stars began moving once more.

One by one.

The Forgotten Dream looked at the countless futures surrounding it.

"...They all end."

Kael nodded.

"They do."

"But before they end..."

"...they live."

Silence followed.

The darkness slowly closed its fingers around the glowing seed.

Kael held his breath.

The child smiled expectantly.

The Keeper watched without blinking.

Orion quietly whispered,

"Come on..."

For one terrifying heartbeat...

Nothing happened.

Then...

The darkness recoiled.

The seed had not vanished.

Instead...

A tiny golden light appeared within the black hand.

Small.

Fragile.

Barely visible.

Yet unmistakably real.

The Forgotten Dream stared at it.

"...It..."

"...didn't disappear."

The child laughed.

"I told you!"

The tiny golden light slowly spread through the surrounding darkness.

Not much.

Only enough to illuminate a single hand.

But for the first time...

The endless black no longer appeared empty.

It held light.

The Last Observer quietly spoke.

**"Contradiction observed."**

The Watcher immediately answered.

**"Impossible."**

The Last Observer remained silent.

Then...

To everyone's astonishment...

It corrected itself.

**"Correction."**

A long pause followed.

**"Incomplete observation."**

Orion's eyes widened.

The Keeper looked utterly speechless.

Kael frowned.

"What just happened?"

Orion answered with quiet disbelief.

"It admitted..."

"...that it was wrong."

The First Witness...

The being that had observed reality since before time...

Had acknowledged that it had not seen everything.

The Sea of Possibilities erupted into brilliant light.

Millions of stars were born in an instant.

Not because new futures had been created.

Because old futures that had once seemed impossible...

Were now imaginable.

The child clapped happily.

"You learned something!"

The Last Observer looked toward the tiny golden light resting within the Nightmare's hand.

Its voice had changed ever so slightly.

Still calm.

Still ancient.

Yet no longer completely certain.

**"Question."**

Everyone looked toward it.

It addressed Kael.

**"If observation remains incomplete..."**

A pause.

**"...how should one continue observing?"**

The question settled deep within Kael's heart.

He looked toward the stars.

Toward the Dream.

Toward the Nightmare.

Toward Orion.

Then smiled.

"With humility."

The Last Observer repeated the unfamiliar word.

**"...Humility?"**

Kael nodded.

"Don't observe to prove you're right."

"Observe because you're willing to be surprised."

The Fifth Lock fell into complete silence.

The Last Observer slowly closed its countless eyes.

Not in defeat.

In contemplation.

For the first time...

It was no longer merely witnessing reality.

It was learning from it.

Then the entire Sea of Possibilities shook.

A deep bell rang somewhere beyond the ancient gate.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Orion's expression changed instantly.

"The Sixth Lock..."

The Keeper looked toward the opening gate.

"...It's opening by itself."

The child looked at Kael with excitement and a trace of worry.

"I think..."

"...someone wants to meet you."

Far beyond the gate, where even dreams had never walked...

A single figure slowly opened its eyes.

Their color was neither silver...

Nor gold...

Nor black.

They were the deep emerald green of fresh spring leaves after the first rain.

And the moment those eyes opened...

The Seed of Tomorrow within Kael's Gardener's Key blossomed into its very first flower.
