Chapter 274 - Chapter 274: The Flower That Chose to Bloom

The First Garden became perfectly still.

No breeze stirred the grass.

No butterfly crossed the emerald sky.

Even the rivers seemed to hold their breath.

Cassian's crystal Gardener's Key remained extended toward Kael.

"Take it."

"If you can make me believe that one flower blooming for a single season..."

"...is worth more than an eternal garden of crystal..."

"...I will abandon everything I have become."

No one spoke.

The twelve Gardeners watched in silence.

Elara folded her hands before her.

The Child of Dreams nervously clutched the Forgotten Dream's hand.

Even the Last Observer remained motionless, unwilling to interrupt what had become something greater than a trial.

Kael lowered his eyes.

The crystal flower rested in the soil.

It was flawless.

Every petal reflected the light like polished glass.

It would never rot.

Never fade.

Never lose a single color.

It would remain exactly as it was...

Forever.

He reached toward it.

Cassian quietly nodded.

"Look carefully."

Kael lifted the flower into his hand.

It felt surprisingly light.

Cold.

Almost weightless.

It possessed extraordinary beauty.

Yet...

There was no scent.

No warmth.

No softness.

Its petals did not bend beneath his fingers.

They could not.

Because they would never change.

Kael closed his eyes.

Without warning...

His thoughts drifted far away.

Not to the First Garden.

Not to the Sea of Possibilities.

But to a small village long ago.

He saw himself as a child.

The memory was faint.

Spring had only just arrived.

Wildflowers covered the hills beyond the village.

His mother had been kneeling beside one of them.

"Kael."

The young boy had run toward her.

"What are you doing?"

She smiled without looking up.

"I'm enjoying the flowers."

"They'll die soon."

She laughed softly.

"They will."

"Then why not pick all of them?"

"So they won't disappear."

She gently shook her head.

"If I pick every flower..."

"...what will bloom tomorrow?"

The memory ended.

Kael slowly opened his eyes.

His grip around the crystal flower loosened.

He looked toward Cassian.

"Can I ask you something?"

Cassian nodded.

"Anything."

"When was the last time you planted a flower?"

Silence.

Cassian answered almost immediately.

"I no longer need to."

"Why?"

"I have already preserved every flower worth preserving."

Kael smiled sadly.

"Exactly."

Cassian frowned for the first time.

Kael slowly knelt beside the living earth.

With one finger, he gently dug a tiny hole in the soil.

Then...

To everyone's surprise...

He placed the crystal flower inside.

The twelve Gardeners exchanged confused glances.

Cassian simply watched.

Kael covered it with earth.

"What are you doing?"

Cassian finally asked.

"Burying it."

The answer echoed through the First Garden.

Cassian looked genuinely puzzled.

"It cannot grow."

"I know."

"It cannot decay."

"I know."

"It cannot become anything else."

"I know."

Kael stood.

"But maybe..."

"...someone who sees this place one day will wonder why a crystal flower is buried beneath the earth."

Cassian remained silent.

"They'll dig it up."

"They'll ask questions."

"They'll tell stories."

"They'll imagine who buried it."

Kael smiled.

"And in that way..."

"...it'll become part of something alive."

The First Garden rustled softly.

For the first time since Cassian's arrival...

A gentle breeze returned.

Cassian quietly stared at the patch of earth.

"...Stories."

"Yes."

"I never considered them."

"You couldn't."

Kael answered kindly.

"You were too busy preserving flowers."

"You forgot that people preserve each other."

The words struck deeper than any weapon.

Cassian looked around the First Garden.

For hundreds of thousands of years...

He had protected every perfect blossom.

But...

Who had remembered the children that picked them?

Who had remembered the lovers that sat beneath their shade?

Who had remembered the old gardeners who planted them?

Flowers alone...

Had never been the point.

Life around them had been.

The Child of Dreams suddenly ran toward a nearby tree.

It reached up as high as it could.

"...Almost..."

"...Almost..."

The Forgotten Dream quietly walked beside it.

Without speaking...

It gently lifted the child.

The child laughed happily and picked a single small blossom.

It immediately jumped back down.

"Look!"

The flower wasn't extraordinary.

Its petals were uneven.

One edge had already begun to curl.

The stem bent awkwardly.

The Child proudly held it toward Cassian.

"I picked it for you."

Cassian stared at the flower.

"It will wilt."

"It will."

"It may die before tomorrow."

The Child nodded cheerfully.

"It probably will."

"Then..."

"...why give it to me?"

The Child smiled with innocent certainty.

"So you can smile today."

Silence.

Cassian accepted the flower.

It trembled slightly in his hand.

The petals brushed against his fingers.

Soft.

Warm.

Fragile.

He had forgotten.

He had forgotten what living things felt like.

A single tear rolled down his face.

Not crystal.

Not silver.

A perfectly ordinary tear.

It landed upon the flower.

The blossom glowed.

Not with overwhelming power.

Not with divine light.

Simply...

With life.

Around them...

The crystal flowers throughout the First Garden began changing.

One by one.

Tiny cracks appeared across their flawless petals.

The twelve Gardeners gasped.

The cracks spread.

Not as damage.

As growth.

From within each crystal blossom...

Small green shoots emerged.

Living stems.

Living leaves.

Living flowers.

The crystal shells gently fell away like old bark.

Cassian watched in disbelief.

"I..."

"...I preserved them."

Elara stepped beside him.

"You preserved their memories."

She gently picked up one of the crystal petals.

"But memories..."

"...are meant to nurture tomorrow."

"They are not meant to imprison yesterday."

Cassian looked at the flower in his hand.

Its petals had already begun to droop.

He smiled.

A real smile.

Small.

Awkward.

Beautiful.

"So..."

"...this is what change feels like."

Kael laughed softly.

"It is."

"It hurts sometimes."

"It does."

"But it's worth it."

Cassian looked toward the endless fields.

For the first time in ages...

He noticed things he had ignored.

Bees drifting between blossoms.

Children's laughter echoing through distant hills.

The scent of fresh earth after rain.

The gentle sound of leaves brushing together.

These things could never exist in perfect stillness.

Life required movement.

Movement required change.

Change required courage.

Cassian slowly raised his crystal Gardener's Key.

Hairline fractures spread across every branch.

The twelve Gardeners watched in stunned silence.

The crystal began dissolving into countless shimmering fragments.

Each fragment drifted into the wind.

Rather than vanishing...

They became seeds.

Millions upon millions of tiny seeds.

The First Garden erupted with light.

Everywhere the seeds landed...

New flowers bloomed.

Not identical.

Not perfect.

Every single one was different.

Some were brilliant crimson.

Others deep sapphire.

Some bloomed crooked.

Some stood tall.

Some were tiny enough to fit on a fingertip.

Others grew larger than trees.

Cassian quietly laughed.

"I spent eternity creating one perfect flower..."

He looked at the endless sea of different blossoms.

"...when I could have been growing this."

The unopened seventh bud on Kael's Gardener's Key trembled.

Its emerald petals slowly began to unfold.

Not completely.

Just enough for a brilliant silver-gold light to shine from within.

The Garden itself seemed to whisper.

Not in words.

In recognition.

The final bloom had begun.

But before it could fully open...

The entire First Garden shook.

Far beyond the endless fields...

A deep crack split the horizon itself.

Not darkness.

Not crystal.

Reality.

Something outside the Garden...

Something older even than the Dream...

Had begun forcing its way inside.

Elara's expression changed instantly.

Orion gripped his staff.

The Last Observer looked toward the fracture with every eye wide open.

Even Cassian's newborn smile disappeared.

The Child of Dreams whispered a name no one had spoken before.

"...The Gardener's Maker."

The crack widened.

And from beyond it...

A single enormous hand reached toward the First Garden.
