Chapter 20 - CHAPTER TWENTY: The Secret Written In Blood

The silence after Sofia's words was unbearable.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

It was as if the entire room had stopped breathing.

Isabella stared at the woman standing in front of her, trying to understand the meaning behind those words.

You are connected to this.

Four words.

Yet they felt heavier than anything she had heard before.

She looked at Luca.

His expression was unreadable, but she knew him well enough now to see the anger beneath the calm.

The tightness in his jaw.

The way his hands curled slightly.

The way he positioned himself between her and danger without even thinking.

He was protecting her.

Even now.

Especially now.

"What do you mean?" Isabella finally asked.

Sofia looked at her carefully.

"I mean your life is not as separate from Luca's as you believe."

A cold feeling moved through Isabella.

"What are you saying?"

Sofia glanced at Luca.

"He never told you?"

Luca's voice turned dangerous.

"Be careful."

Sofia didn't react.

That alone told Isabella something.

This woman wasn't afraid of Luca.

Not like everyone else.

She knew him.

Maybe better than anyone.

"I spent five years trying to uncover the truth," Sofia said. "Five years running from people who wanted me silent."

Luca stepped forward.

"And now you appear because?"

"Because hiding stopped being enough."

Her eyes moved back to Isabella.

"Because they know about her."

Isabella's heart raced.

"Who?"

Sofia hesitated.

And for the first time, Isabella saw fear in her eyes.

"The people who destroyed everything."

Luca's expression hardened.

"My father?"

Sofia looked at him.

"Your father was only a piece of it."

The words hit him.

Because Luca had spent years believing he understood the enemy.

But maybe he never had.

"Explain," he demanded.

Sofia took a slow breath.

"Your father built an empire. Everyone knows that. But what nobody knew was that he wasn't the one making the biggest decisions."

Luca's eyes narrowed.

"Who was?"

Sofia looked away.

"The people who financed him."

The room felt colder.

Isabella listened carefully.

She was beginning to understand.

Luca's world wasn't just about one powerful family.

It was a network.

A hidden system.

And somehow, she was connected to it.

"How am I involved?" Isabella asked.

Sofia looked at her.

"Because your family knew something."

Isabella froze.

"My family?"

"Yes."

Her mind immediately went through every memory she had.

Her childhood.

Her parents.

The ordinary life she thought she understood.

"No," she whispered.

Sofia stepped closer.

"You believe you know where you came from. But there are things your parents never told you."

Luca looked at Isabella.

And that was when she noticed something.

He looked confused.

Not suspicious.

Confused.

Which meant he didn't know either.

For some reason, that made everything feel even more terrifying.

Because if Luca didn't know…

Then who did?

The meeting ended shortly after.

Not because they had answers.

Because they had too many questions.

On the drive back, nobody spoke.

The city lights passed by the window, but Isabella barely noticed them.

Her thoughts were everywhere.

Her entire life suddenly felt like a story someone else had written.

She looked at Luca.

"You knew nothing?"

His eyes stayed on the road.

"No."

"Not even a possibility?"

"No."

She studied him.

"You're telling the truth."

"Yes."

The certainty in his voice helped.

A little.

Because despite everything happening around them, Isabella still trusted him.

And that realization surprised her.

After everything.

After the secrets.

After the danger.

She still trusted him.

When they returned to the house, Luca barely spoke.

He went straight to his office.

Isabella followed.

"You're shutting me out."

He stopped.

"No."

"Yes."

He turned around.

"You just discovered your life might not be what you thought it was. You should be angry. Confused. You should be processing."

"I am."

"Then let me handle this."

There it was.

The wall.

The instinct to protect her by pushing her away.

Isabella stepped closer.

"You always do that."

"Do what?"

"Decide that protecting me means leaving me alone."

His expression changed.

Because she was right.

"I don't know how to keep you safe and let you stay close."

The honesty surprised her.

Isabella softened.

"Then learn."

Luca looked at her.

"Isabella."

"No."

She shook her head.

"I'm tired of being treated like something fragile."

"You're not fragile."

"Then stop acting like I am."

The room became quiet.

Then Luca walked toward her.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like he was approaching something precious.

"You don't understand what you do to me."

Her breath caught.

"What?"

"You make me forget who I'm supposed to be."

The words were quiet.

Raw.

"You make me question everything I was taught."

Isabella looked at him.

"And is that bad?"

"For the old me?"

"Yes."

"For the man I'm becoming?"

He paused.

"No."

The answer stayed between them.

Because that was the truth.

Isabella wasn't destroying Luca.

She was changing him.

And maybe that was the most dangerous thing of all.

Later that night, Isabella couldn't sleep.

Too many thoughts.

Too many unanswered questions.

She walked through the house quietly and found Luca sitting alone in his office.

The man who controlled everything looked completely lost.

She stood in the doorway.

"You know, for someone everyone fears, you look very human right now."

A small smile touched his lips.

"You have a habit of saying things nobody else would dare say."

"Maybe people should."

He looked at her.

"Maybe."

She walked closer.

"What are you thinking about?"

He looked down at the documents spread across the desk.

"Everything."

"Helpful answer."

He almost smiled.

Then his expression became serious.

"I spent my entire life believing my enemies were outside my family."

A pause.

"But what if they were closer than I thought?"

Isabella placed her hand over his.

"Then we find the truth."

He looked at her.

"We?"

"Yes."

"Isabella…"

"I'm already involved."

He knew she was right.

And maybe that was what scared him most.

Not that she was in danger.

But that he didn't want her anywhere else.

A sound suddenly interrupted them.

A security alarm.

Both of them froze.

Luca immediately stood.

The calm disappeared.

"Stay behind me."

Isabella sighed.

"Luca."

"This time, I'm serious."

She saw the fear in his eyes.

Not anger.

Fear.

Someone had entered his world.

Someone had crossed a line.

And whoever it was had chosen the exact moment when Luca was beginning to believe he could have something worth protecting.

The lights suddenly went out.

Darkness filled the room.

Then a message appeared on the security screen.

One sentence.

One warning.

The past always finds its way home.

Luca stared at the screen.

And Isabella realized something.

The enemy wasn't coming for Luca's empire anymore.

They were coming for the one thing Luca had never been able to protect.

His heart.
