Chapter 30 - Chapter 29: Unspoken Things

The office slowly quieted as evening approached.

Most employees had already begun packing their bags, finishing emails, and shutting down their computers for the day. The usual buzz of activity faded into a calmer rhythm, leaving long hallways and open workspaces bathed in the warm orange glow of sunset.

Sofia Mirano remained at her desk.

A stack of documents sat neatly beside her laptop while she finished preparing the meeting summary from the afternoon board session.

The building felt different when most people had left.

Quieter.

More peaceful.

She often stayed a little later than the others to organize schedules and finalize reports for the next day.

Tonight was no different.

Except for one thing.

The rumors.

They had followed her all day.

Every hallway conversation.

Every curious glance.

Even Lucy had sent three dramatic messages asking for updates.

Sofia sighed softly and closed her laptop.

Finally finished.

She leaned back slightly in her chair, stretching her shoulders.

Across the hall, Leo Rivera's office light was still on.

She glanced at the door.

Of course he was still working.

Leo was almost always the last person to leave the building.

Sofia gathered the remaining files she needed to place on his desk before tomorrow morning's meetings.

After a moment of hesitation, she stood and knocked lightly on his office door.

"Come in."

She stepped inside.

Leo sat behind his large wooden desk, reviewing something on his laptop. The soft desk lamp illuminated the room, casting quiet shadows along the walls.

He looked up when she entered.

"Sofia."

"I brought the finalized board meeting summary."

She walked toward the desk and placed the folder neatly beside his laptop.

Leo closed the computer and leaned back slightly.

"You're still here."

"So are you."

Leo almost smiled.

"That's true."

Sofia glanced toward the window behind him.

The sky had deepened into shades of purple and gold as the sun dipped below the city skyline.

"You should go home soon," she said gently.

Leo raised an eyebrow.

"You're giving your CEO instructions now?"

Sofia laughed quietly.

"Just a suggestion."

Leo studied her for a moment.

"And you?"

"I was about to leave."

He nodded.

"Good."

But neither of them moved immediately.

The office felt strangely quiet tonight.

More intimate than usual.

Sofia shifted slightly.

"The board seemed satisfied today."

"Yes."

Leo folded his hands together.

"You handled the presentation smoothly."

Sofia shrugged.

"It's easier when I know what you're thinking."

Leo looked at her carefully.

"You do?"

"Most of the time."

Leo's lips curved faintly.

"That's impressive."

Sofia smiled.

"You're predictable when it comes to business."

Leo raised an eyebrow.

"Predictable?"

"In a good way."

She leaned lightly against the edge of the desk.

"You always focus on long-term strategy first."

Leo considered her words.

"Maybe you know my thinking too well."

Sofia laughed softly.

"That happens when you work together every day."

For a moment the conversation drifted into silence again.

But this silence felt different.

Deeper.

Leo spoke quietly.

"The rumors today."

Sofia sighed.

"Yes."

"Did anyone say anything directly to you?"

"No."

She shook her head.

"Just whispers."

Leo's expression darkened slightly.

"I don't like it."

Sofia looked at him calmly.

"You can't control what people say."

"I can control how the situation is handled."

Sofia tilted her head slightly.

"And how do you plan to handle it?"

Leo paused.

Because the honest answer was more complicated than he wanted to admit.

Finally he said,

"By making sure it doesn't harm you."

Sofia felt warmth rise in her chest again.

"You really don't need to worry so much."

Leo met her eyes.

"I do."

The simple statement hung between them.

Sofia felt her heartbeat quicken slightly.

She wasn't used to Leo speaking so openly.

Usually he kept his emotions carefully hidden behind professionalism.

But lately…

Something had shifted.

She cleared her throat softly.

"Well, the rumor will probably disappear eventually."

Leo didn't look convinced.

"Maybe."

He stood from his chair and walked toward the window.

The city lights flickered on below as evening settled across the skyline.

Sofia watched him quietly.

Leo rarely looked uncertain.

But tonight there was something thoughtful in his posture.

"You're thinking about something," she said.

Leo glanced back at her.

"I am."

Sofia folded her arms lightly.

"Business problem?"

"No."

"Then what?"

Leo hesitated.

Because the truth felt dangerously close to something he wasn't ready to say.

Finally he spoke slowly.

"I'm thinking about how things have changed."

Sofia frowned slightly.

"Changed?"

Leo nodded.

"Before you started working here, the office felt different."

Sofia smiled faintly.

"More organized now?"

Leo chuckled softly.

"Perhaps."

But then his voice softened.

"You brought something else to the environment."

Sofia blinked.

"What do you mean?"

Leo studied her face carefully.

"You make things easier."

Sofia laughed.

"That's literally my job."

Leo shook his head.

"That's not what I meant."

For a moment neither of them spoke.

The space between them felt smaller again.

Leo walked back toward the desk.

Stopping just a few steps away from her.

"You understand people well," he said quietly.

Sofia met his gaze.

"I try."

Leo nodded.

"That's rare in business."

Sofia hesitated.

"Is that a compliment?"

"Yes."

She smiled softly.

"Thank you."

The quiet office seemed to close around them.

The warm glow of the desk lamp made everything feel softer.

Closer.

Leo looked at her with an intensity that made her breath catch slightly.

"Sofia."

"Yes?"

His voice lowered slightly.

"I'm glad you work here."

Her heart skipped.

"I'm glad too."

The moment stretched longer than expected.

Leo almost said something else.

Something he had been trying to ignore for weeks.

But before the words could leave his mouth—

Sofia's phone buzzed loudly on the desk.

Both of them jumped slightly.

Sofia looked down.

Lucy.

Again.

She sighed softly.

"Of course."

Leo chuckled quietly.

"Persistent friend."

Sofia answered the call.

"Yes, Lucy?"

Lucy's excited voice burst through the speaker.

"Important question!"

Sofia rubbed her forehead.

"What now?"

"Are you still at the office with the tall, mysterious CEO everyone is talking about?"

Sofia glanced at Leo.

He was clearly trying not to laugh.

"Yes, Lucy."

Lucy gasped dramatically.

"I knew it!"

Sofia shook her head.

"I'm leaving now."

Lucy giggled.

"Fine. But if you two accidentally fall in love before next week, call me immediately."

Sofia ended the call quickly.

The room fell quiet again.

Leo leaned against the desk, amusement still visible in his eyes.

"She's very direct."

Sofia sighed.

"She has no filter."

Leo smiled faintly.

"Interesting quality."

Sofia grabbed her bag from the chair.

"I should go before she calls again."

Leo nodded.

"Yes."

She walked toward the door.

But before leaving, she paused.

"Goodnight, Leo."

Leo looked at her.

"Goodnight, Sofia."

She stepped out into the quiet hallway.

But as she walked toward the elevator, she couldn't shake the feeling that something had almost happened in that office.

Something important.

And inside his office, Leo remained standing beside the desk.

Thinking.

Because tonight he had come dangerously close to saying something he had been trying very hard to ignore.

And the longer he spent around Sofia Mirano…

The harder it was becoming to pretend those feelings didn't exist.
