Chapter 32 - : The Space Between Them

The silence stretched.

Thick.

Suffocating.

All eyes were on him.

The man at the center.

Matteo.

Slowly—

He turned.

Deliberate.

Controlled.

And when his face was finally revealed—

The room seemed to tighten.

Seraphina's breath stilled.

Adrian's gaze sharpened.

Because this wasn't just a man.

This was authority.

Absolute.

Draped in ceremonial black and crimson, the subtle markings of rank etched into every detail of his attire—

There was no mistaking it.

"…The Pope," Seraphina whispered under her breath.

Not the pope.

But theirs.

The one who ruled this branch of the church from the shadows.

The one whose reach extended far beyond faith—

Into power.

Into blood.

Into control.

Matteo's gaze swept across them both.

Measured.

Knowing.

Then—

He stepped forward.

The room parted for him instantly.

No hesitation.

No resistance.

Power didn't need to announce itself here.

It was understood.

He stopped in front of them.

Close enough now that the weight of his presence pressed against their very breaths.

His eyes landed on Seraphina.

And for a moment—

Something shifted.

Recognition.

Not mild.

Not uncertain.

Absolute.

Then—

To everyone's surprise—

Matteo bowed.

Deep.

Respectful.

"…My Lady," he said.

The words fell like a blade.

Sharp.

Final.

Seraphina's eyes widened—

Not in fear.

But in realization.

"Seraphina De Luca."

Her name echoed softly in the chamber.

And with it—

Came truth.

"The heiress of the De Luca family," Matteo continued calmly.

"The second most powerful mafia bloodline."

A pause.

Then—

"The one even enemies whisper about."

Silence.

Heavy.

Because now—

Everyone in the room understood.

She wasn't just a survivor.

She wasn't just skilled.

She was royalty.

In a world built on violence.

Seraphina straightened slowly.

Her chains still binding her—

But her presence—

Untouched.

Unbowed.

"…You took your time recognizing me," she said coldly.

Matteo smiled faintly.

"I had to be certain."

His gaze flickered briefly to the ruby box now held by one of his men.

"And now, I am."

Seraphina's eyes followed the movement

The box.

Out of her reach.

For the first time—

Something dangerous flickered beneath her calm.

Not fear.

Possession.

That was hers.

"…Release me," she said.

Not a request.

An order.

Matteo didn't hesitate.

"Unbind her."

The command was immediate.

The restraints around her wrists were cut.

She stepped forward slowly, rolling her shoulders once—

Her gaze never leaving the box.

Then—

She stopped.

Because Adrian—

Was still bound.

Still on his knees.

Still surrounded.

"…Him too," she said sharply.

Matteo's expression didn't change.

But the air did.

"No."

One word.

Calm.

Unyielding.

Seraphina turned fully now.

Eyes locked onto Matteo.

Dangerous.

"That wasn't a request."

"And that," Matteo replied evenly, "wasn't a negotiation."

Silence crashed between them.

Because now—

Power was being tested.

Openly.

"He came with me," she continued, her voice lower now—but heavier.

"He leaves with me."

Matteo's gaze shifted briefly to Adrian.

Studying him.

Measuring.

"…He is not part of your bloodline," he said.

"Then make him part of your mercy," she shot back.

A pause.

Then—

A faint chuckle escaped Matteo.

"Mercy," he repeated softly.

"Asking for something this world does not trade in."

Seraphina stepped closer.

Close enough now that even the guards shifted uneasily.

"Everything is traded," she said quietly.

"Name your price."

For a moment—

It almost seemed like he would consider it.

Almost.

Then—

He shook his head.

"Some things," Matteo said calmly, "are removed before they become problems."

Adrian didn't move.

Didn't speak.

But his eyes—

Were watching everything.

Calculating.

Silent.

Seraphina's jaw tightened.

Because she understood now.

This wasn't about negotiation.

This was control.

And Adrian—

Was not part of the equation.

"…You're making a mistake," she said quietly.

Matteo met her gaze.

"Am I?"

A pause.

Then—

"We'll see."

He gestured slightly.

"Take her."

"No."

The word came sharp.

Immediate.

Seraphina moved—

But hands were already on her.

Firm.

Restraining.

Even as she fought—

Even as she resisted—

They held.

Because they knew exactly who she was.

And exactly how dangerous she could be.

"…Don't touch me," she hissed.

But they didn't stop.

Because Matteo had already turned away.

Decision made.

Final.

Her gaze snapped back to Adrian.

For the first time—

There was something raw in it.

Something unguarded.

"…Adrian"

He met her eyes.

Calm.

Too calm.

"It's fine," he said quietly.

A lie.

But a deliberate one.

Because if she stayed—

If she kept fighting—

This would end worse.

Much worse.

"…Don't," he added softly.

A subtle shake of his head.

Not fear.

A warning.

Seraphina froze.

Just for a second.

Because something in his voice—

Didn't match the situation.

Didn't match the man she thought she knew.

But there was no time.

No space to question it.

Because they were already pulling her back.

Step by step.

Away from him.

"…This isn't over," she said, her voice cutting through the room.

Not to Matteo.

To Adrian.

A promise.

A threat.

Both.

Their eyes held—

For one final moment.

Then—

She was gone.

The doors slammed shut behind her.

And just like that—

The room changed.

The tension shifted.

Because now—

Only one of them remained.

Adrian.

The guards tightened their hold.

Weapons drawn.

Cold.

Efficient.

Matteo didn't turn.

Didn't need to.

"Dispose of him."

The words fell without weight.

Without hesitation.

Like they meant nothing at all.

And to him—

They didn't.

The men moved instantly.

Closing in.

Blades ready.

Guns raised.

No ceremony.

No delay.

Adrian exhaled slowly.

His head tilted slightly.

Blood still faintly tracing down his temple.

And then—

His eyes lifted.

Not afraid.

Not desperate.

Something else.

Something darker.

"…You should've let her stay," he said quietly.

The men paused—

Just for a second.

Something in his voice—

Unsettling.

Wrong.

Then—

They attacked.

All at once.

And Adrian—

Moved.
