Chapter 46 - : Questions in the Dark

The door didn't open like the others.

It didn't creak.

It didn't announce itself.

It simply… unlocked.

Soft.

Clean.

Final.

Dante and Luca both noticed immediately.

Not because they heard it—

But because the air changed.

The pressure in the room shifted.

Like something had entered that didn't need permission.

The door opened.

A man stepped in.

Mask on.

Simple black.

No symbols.

No identity.

Just concealment.

But everything about him—

Still.

Controlled.

Heavy.

Dante stood slowly.

Luca followed.

Neither spoke immediately.

Because instinct was louder than thought.

This wasn't a guard.

This wasn't staff.

ii

This was authority.

The man closed the door behind him.

Then stopped.

"…You're awake," he said calmly.

Voice steady.

Unbothered.

Dante studied him.

"…You're the one keeping us here."

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No denial.

Just truth.

Luca narrowed his eyes.

"…Why?"

The masked man tilted his head slightly.

"…Because you matter."

Silence.

That answer didn't explain anything.

But it explained enough.

Dante stepped forward slightly.

"…Who are you?"

A pause.

Then—

"That's not important."

Luca scoffed faintly.

"That's what people say when they don't want consequences."

A beat.

The masked man turned slightly toward him.

"…You talk a lot for someone alive because I allow it."

Silence snapped tight.

Luca went still.

Dante raised a hand slightly—calming him.

"…Then let's talk properly," Dante said.

The man didn't respond immediately.

Then—

"…Ask."

That was it.

Permission.

Luca didn't waste time.

"…How did you meet Seraphina?"

The masked man paused.

"…By accident."

Dante's gaze sharpened.

"…And you kept her close?"

A slight tilt of the head.

"…She stayed."

Simple.

Dangerous simplicity.

Luca folded his arms.

"…Are you guys married?"

Silence.

Longer this time.

Then—

"…Not yet."

A pause.

Then quietly—

"…Soon."

The room went still.

That word landed differently.

Not hopeful.

Not romantic.

Final.

Luca frowned slightly.

"…Soon?"

The man didn't elaborate.

Because he didn't need to.

Dante stepped forward again.

"…Why are we here?"

The masked man turned toward him.

"…Because you are tied to her."

A beat.

"…And that makes you useful."

Honest.

No sugarcoating.

Just truth.

Luca exhaled slowly.

"…So what now? We're prisoners?"

The man shook his head slightly.

"No."

A pause.

"…You're under my protection."

That word again.

Protection.

Dante narrowed his eyes.

"…Protection from what?"

The masked man's voice lowered slightly.

"…From everything else."

Silence.

Heavy.

Because that meant the world outside—

Was worse.

Luca looked at him directly.

"…Take off your mask."

The room stilled.

Even the air felt tighter.

The man didn't move immediately.

Then—

"…If I do," he said calmly,

"you won't be released."

Silence.

Dante exchanged a glance with Luca.

Luca didn't hesitate.

"…We don't care."

A pause.

Then—

"…Agreed."

The masked man stepped forward slightly.

Close now.

Still not revealing.

"…Then understand this."

His voice lowered.

Not threatening.

Just absolute.

"…You don't leave until I decide you're ready."

Silence.

Then—

"…And I will train you."

Dante's expression shifted slightly.

"…Train us for what?"

A pause.

Then—

"…For what comes next."

The implication hung in the air.

Heavy.

Unspoken war.

Unseen enemies.

Things they didn't yet understand.

Luca exhaled slowly.

"…And Seraphina?"

A pause.

The longest yet.

Then—

"…She's mine to handle."

Not possessive in tone.

Not emotional.

Just fact.

Silence followed.

Long.

Measured.

Then Dante spoke quietly.

"…Fine."

Luca snapped his head slightly toward him.

But Dante didn't look away.

"…If staying here keeps her alive," he said,

"…then we stay."

The masked man studied them both.

For a long moment.

Then—

"…Good."

He turned slightly toward the door.

But paused.

"…One more thing."

Both brothers looked at him.

The man's voice softened just slightly.

"…Tell no one what you saw here."

A beat.

Then—

"…Especially her."

Silence.

And then—

He left.

Minutes passed.

Neither brother spoke.

Finally, Luca exhaled.

"…That man…"

Dante finished the thought.

"…Is not normal."

Luca nodded slowly.

"…Nope."

A pause.

"…He's worse than normal."

Dante looked at the closed door.

"…He's already decided everything."

Silence again.

But this time—

It wasn't fear.

It was understanding.

Because now they knew.

They weren't taken.

They were being prepared.

For something coming—

That even they didn't understand yet.
