Chapter 172 - Chapter 172: The Clash of Convictions and Tragedy

Yuichiro and Mika thought about it and decided to follow Paimon; they wanted to gain a deeper understanding of this unique disease among Angels.

Krul followed Paimon out of the passage, and under the moonlight, a figure stood in the distance.

"How was your talk with the King?"

Bael got straight to the point.

Paimon shook his head, but his expression grew increasingly firm; he had made up his mind.

"It's no good. Go and kill Mikael."

Such an answer did not exceed Krul's expectations. Rig had always been unscrupulous in achieving his goals, and as an ancient Angel, Rig was no different.

Yuichiro, however, appeared very anxious.

"He's going to kill Angel Mika?! This really is a memory from some time before Angel Mika's death, isn't it?"

Bael seemed to still have misgivings; he knew Paimon had contracted that disease.

"But the King, in order to save you..."

Seeing his close friend still worrying about him, Paimon got a bit annoyed.

"There's no need to care about a guy like me at all! Once the prohibition is touched, the King will suffer the Curse of God!"

Bael's expression was complicated. He understood Paimon's feelings, but he was still unwilling to disregard his friend's life.

"But Paimon, if we lose you, even if we reach the Paradise..."

"You'll still be there! Even without me, as long as you're there, the King and the country won't have to worry."

Bael sighed and murmured.

"To reach the Paradise even at the cost of losing everything... just what is there?"

Krul and the two nearby, Mika and Yu, all nodded unconsciously. Although they didn't know what the "Paradise" and "God" they spoke of were, reaching it even if it meant losing family and friends was undoubtedly putting the cart before the horse.

Only Bael is normal.

Paimon, however, didn't seem to think so. He grabbed Bael's collar and asked angrily.

"So you mean to let the King commit a grave crime?!"

Bael was not at all intimidated, meeting Paimon's gaze.

"I don't want you to die either! If we're going to die, let's die together."

These words made it hard for Paimon to stay angry.

"Bastard! Stop messing around. Burdens that get in the way should be discarded!"

"Discard half of the Angels? Everyone is still completely ignorant of their own fate!"

Paimon was speechless for a long time. At this moment, his respect for the King and his conscience as an Angel species were at odds.

Bael felt the force on his collar decrease and continued.

"No matter what, I will respect the King's choice."

"Is that so..."

Paimon knew that Bael's ideology had already diverged from his own.

"Then suit yourself!"

Bael still wanted to persuade Paimon.

"You should do the same. You and I are the King's most trusted subordinates, and the people who should trust the King the most."

Yuichiro thought for a moment.

"Hey, Mika, whose side are you on?"

Mika's tone was somewhat uncertain.

"It should be Urd's side, right? What about you, Yuu?"

"Me too. Since we're going to die anyway, we might as well die together."

"Yeah, but it's quite troubling. Thinking that even if I team up with you, we might not be able to save everyone..."

Yuichiro smiled freely.

"Don't think so much, just teaming up is enough."

After saying that, he leaned close to Mika's ear, his eyes glancing at Krul's back.

"Mika, which side do you think this person would be on?"

Mika thought carefully and said in a low voice.

"Lady Krul would probably stand with Urd too."

"Eh? I thought a Progenitor like her would be the kind of Vampire who uses any means to achieve her goals."

Mika smiled; it seemed Yuu's misunderstanding of Krul was quite deep. Although he didn't know what she and Luke were up to, he had seen long ago that Krul had family she cared about in her heart, though he didn't know how that person was doing.

Yuichiro asked in a low voice again.

"Then do you think that guy Luke Luke would also stand with Urd?"

After a while, Mika answered jokingly.

"He would probably give Urd and Rig each a slap to tell them to stop arguing, and then suggest a plan of his own. The plan might not necessarily be useful, but it would definitely be fun."

"His personality is really nasty, that guy..."

The two were whispering secretly on the side, unaware that Krul heard every single word. To be honest, if it were interesting, that fellow Luke might actually do something like that.

"But isn't Luke a subordinate of Rig and Urd? Does he really dare?"

"He probably does. Anyway, Lady Krul can't even beat Luke. I've never seen Luke go all out."

Click, click.

What was that sound?

Mika and Yuichiro looked at Krul. The sound just now came from Krul's knuckles.

Yuichiro tilted his head in confusion and was about to speak when Mika covered his mouth.

"Shh, it must be that we were caught speaking ill of Lady Krul. Don't forget, we can interact with each other."

Krul was very frustrated. Who on earth spread the rumor that she couldn't beat Luke?

Paimon and Bael argued for a while longer. As spectators, Yuichiro and Mika felt that both sides had their points as they listened.

Finally, Bael chose neither to obstruct nor to help, and the two parted ways.

Krul immediately followed Paimon.

Paimon entered the passage again and walked for a long time before stopping at the end. There were three doors here. Paimon seemingly at random walked into one room and then began to wait inside.

Because the Purification Room was right next door, the Progenitor was still inside checking on Angel Mika's condition. He would wait for the Progenitor to leave before taking action.

After an unknown amount of time, inside the Purification Room.

Angel Mika lay on the Progenitor's lap like a little puppy.

"I say, Father, can't I go out yet?"

The Progenitor's voice was gentle.

"In a little while, I'll let you go out."

Angel Mika was a bit unhappy and asked.

"Did I not keep the promise?"

The Progenitor shook his head.

"No, but we are about to leave this place."

Angel Mika immediately became excited upon hearing this.

"Going out? A picnic?!"

"Yeah, something like that."

Angel Mika obediently lay down on the cold experimental bed and said with a smile.

"Okay, I'll rest well!"

The Progenitor said no more. After soothing Angel Mika's emotions, he got up and left.

When the Progenitor left, Angel Mika immediately scrambled up from the bed and said excitedly to the black ball "Yuu."

"Did you hear that? Yuu, we're going on a picnic."

However, "Yuu" did not respond, but instead stared at the door, as if something bad were there.

Tap, tap, tap.

Footsteps were heard. Angel Mika was a bit confused. Had Father come back?

"Father?"

He called out, but there was no response, though the owner of the footsteps had already entered the room.

Paimon's eyes revealed ruthlessness and determination. As long as he killed the experimental subject before him, the King could focus on leading everyone to the Paradise.

Just as Krul was about to follow him in, Luke walked out from inside and passed by Krul.

"What happens next is quite bizarre. I'm going to follow the Progenitor. You guys keep watching."

Krul was completely bewildered, but Luke seemed uninterested in Paimon's impending killing of Angel Mika.

Yuichiro and Mika looked at each other, equally feeling puzzled.

Luke left alone. He didn't go looking for the Progenitor; that guy would be turning back shortly anyway. The commotion from the fight between Paimon and Angel Mika wouldn't be small.

As for why Luke didn't watch them fight, it was because when he read the original work, he felt that both Paimon and Angel Mika were not quite right in the head, and the following plot was extremely inconceivable.

Before long, an explosion rang out, and half the Angels in the city noticed the commotion here.

Soon, the Progenitor rushed over, with other executive Angels following closely behind. However, except for Bael, everyone else waited outside.

Luke sighed and walked back. Entering the room, he saw the Progenitor holding Angel Mika's corpse, while Bael stood beside Paimon's corpse.

And the expressions of Krul, Yuichiro, and Mika were all very complicated.

Luke still had to confirm and asked Krul what had happened.

Although Krul felt that Luke's emotions were a bit too calm, she didn't ask much and simply recounted what she had seen.

After distilling it, Luke concluded the events: Paimon couldn't defeat Angel Mika and committed suicide after realizing that Angel Mika's love for the Progenitor was no less than his own. But Angel Mika was too naive; having learned from Paimon's mouth that his own existence was very detrimental to the Progenitor, he committed suicide out of guilt.

This was also a plot that Luke had found difficult to empathize with when reading the original work; it felt both heroic and naive for both of them.
