Chapter 4: The Cracks Widen

Hae-ryung became her secret. Seo-ah would visit the cavern after her audits, learning to feel the city's consciousness not through her implant, but through her own restored senses. She learned to see the Harmony Index not as a hum, but as a parasitical vine, choking the individual minds it claimed to unify.

Her work became an act of rebellion. When she audited memories, she began to subtly corrupt the extraction process. She'd leave a single, seemingly insignificant detail—the smell of rain, a particular shade of blue—a seed of emotional deviation that wouldn't trigger the algorithm. She was creating anomalies.

One day, during the audit of a high-ranking military official, she found something she wasn't supposed to. Hidden deep beneath layers of encrypted military protocol was a schematic. It was the architecture of the Harmony Index's core—a quantum processing unit called the "Moksha Core," located not in Seoul, but beneath the dormant volcano on the Jeju Republic's border. The schematic included a weakness: a fail-safe that could be triggered by a specific bio-resonant frequency—the frequency of a haenyeo's diving trance, a state of extreme mental and physical control that pre-dated the Index.

She rushed back to the cavern. "They're not just feeding on us," she said, spreading the schematic on the mossy ground. "They're storing it all. The Core. If we could destroy it, the entire Index would collapse."

Hae-ryung studied the schematic, her old eyes sharp. "The fail-safe. It was put in by a dissident engineer decades ago. A final option. But the resonance required… it would kill the person who triggers it. The mind would be torn apart by the release of energy."

"A suicide mission," Seo-ah said, the words tasting like ash.

"Not suicide," Hae-ryung said, placing a gnarled hand on Seo-ah's cheek. "Sacrifice. It is the foundation of all our stories, child. Your mother dove into the sea, knowing the currents could take her. This is no different."

That night, the Harmony Index's hum in Seo-ah's ear changed. It was no longer a lullaby. It was a countdown. Her rank began to flicker: 99.7… 97.2… 89.1. The system was detecting her deviation.
