Chapter 1 - A normal day, or maybe not

There was nothing special about that morning.

The sky was clear, the kind of quiet blue that didn't ask for attention. The streets carried their usual rhythm—vendors setting up stalls, bikes passing too close, people moving with purpose even if they didn't have one.

For Vijay Dev, it was just another day he didn't think much about.

He walked toward school with his hands in his pockets, his pace unhurried, eyes drifting from one passing detail to another. A torn poster on a wall. A stray dog sleeping under a cart. Two kids arguing over something that didn't matter.

He noticed things.

Not because he tried to.

It just… happened.

"Oi, philosopher."

The voice came from behind.

Vijay didn't turn immediately. He already knew who it was.

"Walking like you're solving life again?" Kabir said, catching up and throwing an arm casually over Vijay's shoulder. "At least share the answer this time."

"I wasn't thinking anything."

"Yeah, that's worse," Kabir laughed. "A guy like you should always be thinking. Otherwise it's suspicious."

Vijay gave a faint smile, the kind that came and went without effort.

Kabir filled the silence easily, as always—talking about a cricket match, a teacher he didn't like, something ridiculous someone did yesterday. Vijay listened, occasionally responding, mostly just letting the words pass through.

It was comfortable.

Normal.

The school gate was already crowded by the time they reached. Students stood in groups, some loud, some half-asleep, some pretending to care about things they didn't.

Vijay moved through it without much attention.

He preferred it that way.

Invisible was easier.

"Hey, did you hear?" Kabir nudged him slightly as they climbed the stairs.

"Hear what?"

"New transfer student. Joined our class."

Vijay shrugged. "Okay."

Kabir stopped walking for a second, staring at him like he'd just said something offensive.

"That's it? 'Okay'?"

"What else should I say?"

"I don't know—maybe show some curiosity? She's new."

"So?"

Kabir shook his head. "You're impossible."

The classroom was louder than usual.

Not chaotic, but restless. Like something had already happened before they arrived.

Vijay took his usual seat near the window. The wood of the desk was scratched with names and marks left behind by people who had probably forgotten they ever sat there.

Kabir leaned back in his chair.

"Just wait," he said. "You'll see."

Vijay didn't ask what he meant.

A few minutes later, the teacher walked in.

The room quieted, though not completely.

"There's a new student joining today," she said, placing her books down. "I expect everyone to behave."

That only made a few people more interested.

Vijay rested his chin lightly on his hand, looking out the window for a moment. The sunlight fell across the edge of his desk, warm but not harsh.

Then—

"Come in."

The door opened.

Vijay didn't look immediately.

He wasn't avoiding it. Just… delayed.

A few murmurs spread across the room.

Low. Curious.

He shifted his gaze.

And saw her.

She stepped inside quietly.

No dramatic entrance. No hesitation either.

Just… calm.

Her presence didn't demand attention—but it still gathered it.

"Introduce yourself," the teacher said.

The girl looked at the class.

Not nervously.

Not confidently.

Just… steadily.

"My name is Riya."

Her voice was soft, clear enough to be heard without effort.

"I transferred here recently."

That was it.

No extra words.

No attempt to impress.

The teacher nodded. "Take the empty seat near the back."

The empty seat.

Next to Vijay.

Kabir turned slowly toward him, eyes widening just a little, like he'd just witnessed something important.

"…No way," he whispered.

Vijay didn't respond.

He was watching her.

Riya walked down the aisle, her steps unhurried. There was something precise about the way she moved—not stiff, not careful—but controlled. Like she was aware of everything around her without needing to look at it.

When she reached the desk, she paused briefly.

Then sat down.

"Hi," she said quietly.

Vijay blinked once, as if pulled back from somewhere else.

"…Hi."

There was a small silence after that.

Not awkward.

Just… unclaimed.

Kabir leaned forward slightly from his seat.

"I'm Kabir," he said with a grin. "If you need help with anything, just ignore him and ask me."

Vijay didn't react.

Riya gave a faint smile.

"Okay."

The class resumed.

The teacher started explaining something.

Words filled the room again.

But Vijay wasn't fully listening.

He wasn't staring either.

Just… aware.

There was something about her.

Not something obvious.

Not something he could point to.

Just a feeling.

He noticed her hands first.

Still.

Too still.

Then her eyes.

They followed the teacher, the board, the notebook.

Perfectly normal.

And yet—

At one point, she smiled.

Not at anything specific.

Just a small, quiet smile.

It didn't last long.

Barely a second.

But for some reason—

it didn't feel natural.

Vijay looked away.

He didn't think about it again.

At least—

that's what he told himself.

Outside, the day went on like nothing had changed.

Inside the classroom, lessons continued.

People laughed. Talked. Passed notes.

Everything was normal.

But somewhere in that normal—

something had already shifted.

And Vijay had noticed it.

Even if he didn't understand it yet.
