Dawn came with tension.
The courtyard was already filled.
No one dared be late.
Kael stood at the front, arms behind his back, eyes calm as he watched the assembled disciples. Lines were formed—uneven, nervous, but present.
Good.
They were learning.
Fear was the fastest teacher.
"Begin," Kael said.
Dren stepped forward, barking orders. Training commenced immediately—sparring, conditioning, weapon drills. No wasted motion.
Kael observed in silence.
Weak.
Undisciplined.
Unfocused.
But not useless.
Not yet.
"Too slow," Kael said suddenly.
A disciple froze mid-strike.
Kael moved.
In an instant, he stood before him.
"Again."
The disciple attacked.
Kael shifted slightly—
Dodged.
Countered.
The man hit the ground.
Hard.
"Again."
And again.
And again.
By the fifth time, the disciple's movements sharpened.
Barely.
Kael nodded once.
"Better."
He turned.
Progress.
That was all he needed.
---
A disturbance rippled at the edge of the courtyard.
Someone had arrived.
The disciples parted instinctively.
A group entered—uniformed, composed, carrying themselves with confidence.
Not from this branch.
At their center stood a woman.
Black robes.
Gold-lined.
Eyes like cold glass.
She walked forward without hesitation.
Stopping ten steps from Kael.
"You're the one," she said.
Her voice was smooth.
Controlled.
But edged.
Kael met her gaze.
"And you are?"
A faint smile touched her lips.
"Elara."
She paused.
"Envoy of the Black Veil Sect."
Murmurs broke out instantly.
"The Black Veil—"
"Why are they here?"
"That's an inner region faction—"
Kael didn't react.
Interesting.
"So," he said calmly, "you came all this way for me?"
Elara's eyes studied him.
Measured.
Careful.
"Yes."
A pause.
Then—
"To see if the rumors were true."
Kael stepped forward.
The distance between them shrank.
"And?"
Elara's gaze sharpened.
"They didn't go far enough."
The air grew tense.
Charged.
Two predators.
Testing.
"Elder Varyn was weak," she continued. "Killing him proves little."
Kael smiled faintly.
"Then why are you here?"
Elara tilted her head slightly.
"To offer you a choice."
Behind her, her escorts tensed.
Watching.
Ready.
"Join us," she said.
"Black Veil rewards strength. Power. Ambition."
Her eyes locked onto his.
"We can give you more than this… broken branch ever could."
Silence fell.
Every disciple held their breath.
Waiting.
Kael looked around slowly.
At the courtyard.
At the disciples.
At the fragile structure he had just begun building.
Then—
Back at her.
"No."
The word was simple.
Absolute.
Elara's expression didn't change.
But something flickered in her eyes.
"…I see."
She took a step closer.
Lowering her voice slightly.
"Then understand this."
A faint pressure spread from her.
Not overwhelming—
But dangerous.
"You've just made yourself a target."
Kael didn't move.
Didn't flinch.
Instead—
He smiled.
"Good."
