Chapter 44 - The Wall That Breathes

Morning arrived without ceremony, yet the air carried a weight that was impossible to ignore.

The training ground, which had once felt like a place of routine, now stood transformed into something far more unforgiving. The earlier rounds had already stripped away uncertainty. What remained were those who could endure—and those who would soon be broken.

Leo stood among them.

His body had not fully recovered from the previous day. The soreness lingered in his muscles, the bruises beneath his skin reminding him of every mistake he had made. Each breath carried a faint ache, especially when it filled his chest too deeply.

Yet none of that unsettled him.

Because his attention was fixed on something else.

Across the field.

Aldric.

The name alone carried weight, but seeing him in person again made that weight real. He stood with the same quiet composure as before, his posture relaxed yet precise, as if he did not need to prepare for what was coming.

There was no tension in him.

No visible anticipation.

Only certainty.

"Leo."

The instructor's voice cut cleanly through the morning air.

He stepped forward without hesitation.

"Position."

Leo moved into the center of the field, his grip firm around the wooden blade. The ground beneath his feet felt solid, grounding him, even as the silence around him deepened.

Moments later, Aldric stepped forward as well.

He did not rush.

Each step was measured, deliberate, carrying a quiet confidence that needed no display.

They stood facing each other.

For a brief moment, nothing moved.

Then—

"Begin."

Aldric moved first.

There was no explosive burst of speed.

No sudden aggression.

And yet—

in an instant, the distance between them closed.

Leo's focus sharpened immediately.

He searched for it.

That moment.

That shift.

The beginning of the movement.

He saw it.

Clear.

Defined.

Leo moved.

And still—

he was late.

The strike landed against his side, not with overwhelming force, but with precision that disrupted his balance instantly. Leo staggered slightly, his footing shifting under him before he could fully stabilize.

It wasn't just faster.

It was cleaner.

More controlled.

Leo adjusted quickly, raising his guard again, forcing his breathing to steady.

Too early… or too late?

He couldn't tell.

Aldric stepped back just enough to reset the distance.

His expression remained unchanged.

"You're watching too much," he said calmly.

Leo didn't respond.

Instead, he focused again.

Aldric moved.

This time, Leo didn't wait for certainty.

He moved with the first hint of motion.

Their weapons collided.

The impact was solid, but not equal.

Leo felt the difference immediately.

Aldric's strike carried not just force, but control that redirected the exchange entirely. Leo's blade was pushed aside, his balance broken again as Aldric stepped in smoothly.

The next strike came without delay.

Leo barely managed to shift away, the wooden blade grazing his shoulder instead of landing cleanly.

Too slow.

He stepped back again.

Reset.

Focus.

"Again," Aldric said quietly.

He moved.

Leo followed.

This time, something felt different.

Not perfect.

But closer.

He saw the shift.

Moved with it.

Met the strike.

For a brief instant—

they were equal.

Then—

Aldric adjusted.

The angle changed.

The pressure increased.

Leo's guard broke.

Hit.

The impact forced him back several steps, his breathing breaking slightly under the accumulated strain.

"Closer," Aldric said.

Leo's eyes lifted.

Not mocking.

Not dismissive.

Acknowledging.

That alone sent a subtle ripple through the watching trainees.

Leo steadied himself again.

His body hurt.

His breathing was uneven.

But his focus—

sharpened.

Don't chase the moment.

Kael's words surfaced in his mind.

Recreate what leads to it.

Leo exhaled slowly.

Aldric moved again.

This time—

Leo didn't wait.

He didn't search for the perfect moment.

He moved with what he had.

Their blades met again.

The impact rang louder this time.

Leo held.

Barely.

Aldric's eyes narrowed slightly.

For the first time—

there was resistance.

But it wasn't enough.

Aldric stepped in, shifting the pressure, breaking Leo's stance with precise movement.

Hit.

Leo staggered.

Another strike followed.

Leo tried to recover—

but the sequence overwhelmed him.

Hit.

His footing collapsed.

He fell.

The ground met him hard, the impact knocking the breath from his lungs.

For a moment, everything blurred.

"…Get up."

The voice wasn't harsh.

But it carried weight.

Leo's fingers pressed against the ground.

His body resisted.

Every muscle protested.

But he moved.

Slowly.

He stood again.

His legs felt heavier now.

His breathing rougher.

But his eyes—

steady.

"I'm not done," he said.

Aldric watched him for a moment.

Then nodded.

"Good."

He moved again.

Faster this time.

No restraint.

Leo's focus tightened.

The shift—

He saw it.

Moved—

On time.

The strike passed.

Leo stepped forward.

His blade moved—

Clean.

Direct.

And it connected.

Again.

Aldric blocked it.

But—

his stance shifted.

Just slightly.

Enough.

Leo saw it.

Not as a moment.

But as flow.

He moved again.

Faster.

Not perfect.

But continuous.

For the first time—

he wasn't chasing.

He was responding.

Adapting.

Living within the exchange.

Their blades clashed again.

And this time—

Aldric didn't immediately overpower him.

A faint shift passed through the field.

"…He's keeping up…"

"…How…?"

Leo didn't hear them.

Because everything had narrowed.

To this.

This exchange.

This movement.

This flow.

Aldric's eyes sharpened.

Then—

for the first time—

he stepped forward with intent.

The pressure increased instantly.

Leo felt it.

The difference.

The gap.

And yet—

he didn't break.

He moved.

Again.

Again.

Each time—

closer.

Not perfect.

But real.

Until—

Aldric changed.

Completely.

The next strike came faster than anything before.

Leo saw it—

But couldn't fully follow.

Their blades collided—

And shattered his guard.

The final strike landed clean.

Leo was thrown back, his body hitting the ground hard, the impact echoing through his bones.

This time—

he didn't get up immediately.

His chest rose and fell unevenly.

His vision blurred at the edges.

"…Enough."

The instructor's voice ended it.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Complete.

Leo remained still for a moment longer.

Then—

slowly—

he sat up.

The world returned gradually.

The field.

The people.

The weight of their attention.

He lost.

There was no doubt.

But—

his fingers tightened slightly.

Because something had changed.

Not just a single hit.

Not just survival.

But understanding.

He had felt it.

Not as a moment—

But as something continuous.

Something he could grow into.

Across the field, Aldric stood still.

Watching him.

"…You improved," Aldric said quietly.

Leo looked up.

"…Not enough," he replied.

Aldric didn't disagree.

But he didn't dismiss it either.

"…No," he said. "Not yet."

A pause.

Then—

"…But you're closer than you were."

Leo stood slowly.

His body still ached.

His strength nearly gone.

But his gaze—

steady.

Because now—

he understood.

The wall in front of him—

was not unbreakable.

Only—

far away.
