Chapter 1 - Elixir of Salvation

Chapter One:

The chains around Kazo's wrists were cold, heavier than iron, as if they carried the weight of his fate itself. The great hall stood silent, filled with watching eyes—some curious, others indifferent. None showed mercy.

At the far end, seated upon a high throne carved from dark stone, the ruler observed him without emotion.

"Kazo Hayashi," the ruler said, his voice echoing like a verdict from the void. "You have been judged. Your punishment is death."

A murmur spread through the hall, though Kazo did not react. His gaze remained steady, distant. Death was no longer a surprise—it had been waiting for him since the day he was captured.

But what haunted him was not death.

It was the thought of Aiko.

Her smile. Her voice. The promise he made before everything fell apart.

"I will come back," he had told her.

A promise that now felt impossible.

"However…" the ruler continued, leaning slightly forward, "I am willing to offer you a chance."

For the first time, Kazo's eyes shifted.

"A chance?" he asked quietly.

The ruler's lips curved into something that almost resembled a smile.

"There is an island," he said. "A place lost to maps and feared in legends. Oni no Shima—the Island of Demons."

The name alone stirred unease in the room.

"No one who has set foot there has ever returned," the ruler added. "Yet, it is said that deep within the island lies the Elixir of Life."

Kazo remained silent, listening.

"Bring it to me," the ruler said, his voice lowering, "and I will grant you your freedom."

The chains suddenly felt lighter.

Freedom.

The word echoed in Kazo's mind—but it was not freedom that stirred his heart.

It was Aiko.

"If I succeed…" Kazo said slowly, "I walk free?"

"Yes."

"And I return to my wife?"

A brief pause.

Then the ruler nodded. "If you live."

A dangerous condition.

Kazo lowered his head for a moment, thinking—not of the island, nor the demons, but of the small house by the river… of quiet mornings… of Aiko waiting.

He lifted his head again.

"I accept."

The decision rippled through the hall like a shockwave. Some laughed quietly. Others shook their heads. To them, Kazo had not chosen life—he had chosen a different kind of death.

But Kazo knew something they did not.

He had something worth dying for.

At dawn, he was taken to the edge of the kingdom.

The sea stretched endlessly before him, dark and restless. A small wooden boat waited at the shore, barely enough to survive the journey.

"No guards. No weapons beyond this," one soldier said, handing him a worn blade. "You're on your own."

Kazo stepped into the boat without hesitation.

As the shore faded behind him, so did the world he once knew.

The waves grew rougher the farther he traveled. The sky darkened, even though the sun still lingered somewhere beyond the thick clouds. Hours passed—or perhaps days. Time lost meaning in the endless sea.

Then… he saw it.

A shadow in the distance.

At first, it looked like a mountain rising from the ocean. But as he drew closer, its shape twisted into something unnatural.

The Island of Demons.

Oni no Shima.

Dark cliffs rose like jagged teeth. Mist coiled around the land as if the island itself was breathing. Strange sounds echoed faintly—whispers carried by the wind.

Kazo tightened his grip on the oar.

"You made it this far…" he murmured to himself.

But something deep inside him whispered back:

This is where you die.

The boat struck the shore with a dull thud.

Silence.

No birds. No wind. No life.

Kazo stepped onto the sand.

The moment his foot touched the ground, a cold sensation crawled up his spine—as if the island had noticed him.

A presence.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then, from somewhere within the mist, a voice echoed—soft, distorted, inhuman:

"Another one… has come."

Kazo slowly reached for his blade.

"I'm not here to die," he said under his breath.

The fog shifted.

And something moved within it.

Something not human.

And not alone.
