The female doctor stood by the bed, watching the woman curled beneath the quilt. Even though she was shielded by the heavy fabric, the violent trembling of her body told the doctor everything she needed to know.
"Hello, I am a doctor. Please, I need you to cooperate with an examination," she said softly, reaching out to gently pat the form under the quilt.
Evelyn felt nothing but a bone-deep chill. Not even the thick military quilt could provide the warmth she craved. "No..." her voice came out as a weak, broken whisper from beneath the covers.
At that moment, the door to the lounge was rudely thrown open. "Where is she?"
The sound of that familiar voice caused Evelyn's tears to flow even more violently. Michael stepped into the room, his eyes instantly finding the bed. The doctor looked at him with a helpless expression, spreading her hands. "She hasn't been checked yet. She won't let me."
