Sitting in the car, Alen looked at his sister's frail back, his heart aching.
Half an hour later, he stepped out into the biting wind, grabbing Evelyn who still refused to give up, and pulling her firmly back into the passenger seat.
"Alen, leave me alone! Just go back first," Evelyn sobbed, trying to open the door again. "Michael loves me so much... he will listen to my explanation if I just stay!"
Without a word, Alen locked the doors from the driver's side. He couldn't stand watching his sister degrade herself, begging at the gates for a man who had completely cast her aside.
"Alen! Let me out of the car!" Evelyn pounded on the window, screaming in desperation.
Ignoring her pleas, he started the engine and drove straight away from the estate.
On the journey back, Evelyn fell completely silent. Leaning her head against the headrest with her eyes closed, her entire body was consumed by an unbearable atmosphere of despair.
