Chapter 13 - Don’t Let Them Take You

The moment it spoke—

everything broke.

Cian moved first.

Not a step.

Not a pause.

A shift.

Sharp.

Lethal.

Elara barely had time to breathe before he pushed her behind him—hard enough to force distance, but not enough to lose contact.

His arm stayed there.

Blocking.

Anchoring.

"You don't move," he said.

Low.

Final.

The thing didn't wait.

It came forward.

Fast.

Too fast.

The shadows bent around it—

like it didn't belong to them.

Elara's pulse slammed.

The mark burned—violent now, uncontrolled, spreading through her chest like fire.

She gasped—

her fingers catching his sleeve.

"It's stronger," she whispered.

Cian didn't look back.

"I know."

The figure stepped into the light.

Not fully visible.

Not fully real.

But watching.

Focused.

On her.

"Come with us," it said.

Not a demand.

A certainty.

Elara shook her head.

"I'm not going anywhere."

Her voice held.

Barely.

Cian felt the tremor anyway.

His stance shifted.

Lower.

Deadlier.

"That wasn't a request," it replied.

Cian smiled.

Cold.

"You should've asked."

It moved.

One second still—

the next—

in front of them.

Cian intercepted it.

Impact cracked through the corridor—stone splitting under his feet.

Elara stumbled back.

The air ripped from her lungs.

The mark flared harder.

Too much.

Too fast.

Cian didn't give it space.

His hand caught its throat—

slamming it into the wall.

Hard.

The stone fractured.

The thing didn't react.

Didn't choke.

It smiled.

"You're stronger than expected."

Cian's grip tightened.

"And you're already dead."

He drove it back again—

but it twisted—

unnatural—

slipping free like smoke.

It moved past him.

Toward her.

"Elara."

Her body froze.

Not fear.

The mark.

Pulling.

Calling.

Telling her to step forward.

To go.

"I can't fight this," she whispered.

Her knees weakened.

The heat surged again.

Cian was there instantly.

His arm wrapped around her waist—

pulling her back into him.

Hard.

"You don't have to," he said.

Low.

Close.

"Just stay with me."

The words grounded her.

Barely.

But enough.

The creature stopped.

Watching them.

"You don't belong here," it said.

Soft.

"You belong with us."

Something inside her reacted.

Not agreement.

Recognition.

That was worse.

Cian moved again.

Faster.

His body placing itself fully between her and it.

"You touch her again—"

His voice dropped.

Cold.

Final.

"And I won't leave anything left of you to send back."

The creature tilted its head.

Studying him.

Then laughed.

"You already know what she is."

Silence slammed down.

Sharp.

Immediate.

Elara felt it.

That shift.

Cian didn't answer.

Didn't deny it.

That silence—

said enough.

"You can't keep her," it continued.

A step closer.

Closer than it should have been allowed.

Cian didn't move.

Didn't step back.

His grip tightened on her.

Pulling her closer.

As if distance—

was no longer acceptable.

"I don't need to keep her," he said quietly.

"I just need to make sure you don't take her."

The creature smiled.

"Then you'll fail."

The corridor shifted.

Darkness thickened.

More shapes formed.

Not one.

Not two.

Many.

Elara's breath hitched.

"They're multiplying—"

"No."

Cian's voice stayed steady.

"They were always here."

That realization hit harder than the attack.

They hadn't broken in.

They had been waiting.

The mark pulsed again.

Faster.

Stronger.

Her body shook.

"I can't—"

Cian turned instantly.

His hand caught her face.

Firm.

Grounding.

"Look at me."

She did.

Without hesitation.

"Stay here," he said.

Lower.

Closer.

"With me."

Her breathing steadied.

Just enough.

The pull weakened—

slightly.

The creatures hesitated.

Watching.

Because something had changed.

Again.

One stepped forward.

"You're too late."

Cian didn't look at it.

"Try me."

A pause.

Then—

"We're not here to take her."

Everything stopped.

Even the air.

Elara's pulse slammed.

"What?"

But the creature didn't look at her.

Only him.

"We're here…"

A beat.

Colder.

"…to make sure she doesn't survive."

Silence crashed.

Heavy.

Final.

Elara's breath caught—

sharp.

Because now—

this wasn't about being taken.

It was about being erased.

Cian went still.

For the first time—

completely still.

Then—

his grip tightened.

Not just holding her.

Anchoring her.

Keeping her there.

"I said don't let them take you—"

His voice dropped.

Lower than before.

More dangerous.

"I didn't say I'd survive if they do."

Her pulse stuttered.

Because that—

wasn't a threat.

It was truth.

The shadows surged.

All at once.

No hesitation.

No pause.

Cian moved.

Faster than before.

And this time—

he didn't hold back.

The corridor exploded into motion.

Impact.

Power.

Shadows tearing apart.

Stone cracking beneath force.

Elara barely saw it.

Only felt it—

the air shifting,

the ground trembling,

the mark burning harder than ever.

One broke through.

Reaching her.

Fingers inches away—

when Cian turned.

Too fast.

Too precise.

His hand caught it mid-air—

crushing it instantly.

Gone.

Like it never existed.

He didn't look at her.

But he moved closer.

Again.

Always between her and them.

Like instinct.

Like necessity.

Like something he couldn't stop anymore.

"They won't stop," she said.

Her voice quieter.

But clearer.

"I know."

"They'll keep coming."

"Yes."

A beat.

Then—

"They only need one chance."

The mark flared—

violent.

Elara dropped to one knee.

Pain tearing through her chest.

"Elara."

His voice broke.

Not fully.

But enough.

He turned to her—

fast.

Urgent.

His hand gripping her face again.

"Stay with me."

Her vision blurred.

"They're pulling me—"

"I know."

His forehead almost touched hers.

Too close.

Too real.

"But you don't go."

A pause.

His voice lowered.

More dangerous.

More certain.

"Because if you do—"

A breath.

Heavy.

"I won't let anything in this world keep you."

That—

stopped her.

Not the pain.

Not the pull.

Him.

Her focus locked back onto him.

The creatures stilled.

Watching.

Because now—

they understood.

The first one spoke again.

Quieter.

Colder.

"You can't stop what's coming."

Cian didn't move.

Didn't answer.

His eyes stayed on her.

Only her.

Then—

he stood.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Something in the air shifted.

Deeper.

He turned.

Finally.

To them.

"You've already made one mistake," he said.

Quiet.

Cold.

"Coming here."

Another step.

The shadows flickered.

Unstable.

"And now—"

His gaze darkened.

Unforgiving.

"You're about to make another."

The creatures surged.

All at once.

Cian stepped forward—

to meet them.

And this time—

he didn't stop.
