Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The River's Truth

Sam Nicholas arrived at the riverbank to find the area already swarming with forensic teams and cordoned off by bright yellow tape. The air near the rushing water was thick with the scent of damp earth and the heavy feeling of a final, tragic resolution. He walked down to the water's edge, where the light of the setting sun reflected off the dark, churning surface of the river. The silence of the officers on the scene told Sam that the hope of a rescue had finally died.

The recovery teams were working in the cold shallows, their white protective suits standing out against the dark mud of the bank. Sam stood by as they pulled three small, lifeless forms from the thick river reeds, confirming his worst fears for the family. He didn't need to check their IDs; the age and descriptions matched the Gravitus grandchildren perfectly. The three boys, who had been the joy of George's life, were now part of a crime scene that would haunt Sam forever.

The shock of the discovery hit Sam Nicholas like a physical force, momentarily robbing him of his breath as he stared at the small forms. He had spent his career seeing the darker side of humanity, but the calculated nature of this crime was a different level of horror. The children had been placed in the river next to their own home, a deliberate act of cruelty meant to be found by those who loved them. Sam felt a surge of professional anger, his confusion turning into a hardened resolve to find the killer.

Sam stood in the mud, looking from the bodies in the river back toward the silent, empty silhouette of the Gravitus house. He realized then that this was not a kidnap case anymore; the presence of the bodies confirmed it was a cold-blooded murder case. The perpetrator had no intention of returning the children, and the disappearance of George and Stir now took on a much more lethal significance. The killer was not just taking people; they were executing a legacy and leaving the evidence in the water.

The investigator confirmed the details for the official police record, his hand trembling slightly as he signed the digital forms. He realized that the proximity of the bodies to the home meant the killer was someone who knew the family's routines and the layout of the land perfectly. This was a targeted strike, a message written in the lives of the innocent descendants of a man who had tried to hide his past. Sam looked at the dark water one last time, promising the boys that he would find whoever had done this.

As the forensic teams moved the bodies away, Sam Nicholas turned his back on the river and looked toward the future of the investigation. He knew that he couldn't solve this alone and that the links to Arnold and the flight crash required a deeper level of forensic analysis. He needed a partner who could see the things a normal officer would miss in the year 2070. He stepped into his car, his mind already set on the next part of the hunt, knowing the thriller was only beginning.
